Use a narrowly scoped Cloudflare WAF custom rule, but first obtain ScreenshotNeo’s current, operator-published request identity. Why Cloudflare challenges screenshot requests
Cloudflare’s bot and WAF controls evaluate every request, including a request made by a legitimate screenshot service. A capture can therefore receive a managed challenge, a custom block, a bot score action, or an interstitial instead of your page. The result is often a blank image, an error response, or a screenshot of the challenge page.
Cloudflare describes bot allowlists as lists of permitted bots matched by signals such as IP address, user-agent, or both. Its verified-bot validation also supports Web Bot Auth and IP validation. Those signals are useful only when they come from the service operator and can be checked reliably.
What you need before creating a rule
- Administrative access to the Cloudflare zone containing the site.
- The exact hostname ScreenshotNeo must access, such as
www.example.com. - The smallest set of URL paths it needs to capture. Use exact paths or tightly bounded prefixes rather than the entire site.

Find the request that Cloudflare blocked
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, choose your zone.
- Open Security and then Events (the label may appear as Security Events in your dashboard).
- Trigger one ScreenshotNeo capture of the test URL.
- Filter the event list by the hostname and the approximate time of the request.
- Record the action, matching rule ID, hostname, URI path, source IP, user-agent, and any stable header shown in the event details.
This observation tells you which control is stopping the request. A managed challenge, a custom WAF rule, a rate limit, and a bot-management action may require different exception behavior. Do not disable all security features simply because one capture failed.
Choose an identity signal
Documented IP range
A published, maintained egress range is operationally straightforward. Match the source IP against a Cloudflare IP list or an expression containing the operator’s documented ranges. The trade-off is maintenance: your rule must be updated when ScreenshotNeo adds, removes, or rotates addresses. Confirm whether the range is dedicated to ScreenshotNeo and whether IPv4 and IPv6 are both included.
Web Bot Auth or another validated signature
Cryptographic or platform-validated identity is stronger against spoofing than a string that any client can copy. If ScreenshotNeo provides Web Bot Auth or a signed header, follow its verification instructions exactly, including key rotation and timestamp checks. Keep the verification condition in the rule or validation product that Cloudflare documents for that identity.
User-agent
A user-agent can be useful as an additional constraint, but it is not proof of identity because clients can change it. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation states: “The userAgent parameter does not bypass bot protection.” It recommends non-configurable headers for identification because the user-agent can be changed. If a user-agent is the only available signal, combine it with the observed source IP and a narrow hostname/path condition, and treat the exception as weaker.

Create a narrow Cloudflare WAF custom rule
Expression design
Open Security → WAF → Custom rules and create a rule that combines all constraints you can verify. Use the operator’s real values in place of the illustrative names below; do not paste placeholders into production.

If you maintain an IP list, a named Cloudflare list such as $SCREENSHOTNEO_EGRESS keeps address updates separate from the rule expression. Use exact paths where possible; a prefix such as /public-previews/ must not accidentally include administration, account, or private API routes.
Action and ordering
Choose Allow only when the identity is positively validated and the request should bypass the specific control. Where Cloudflare offers a Skip action, use it to skip only the relevant managed rules or bot checks, not every security product in the zone. Put the exception ahead of the managed challenge or custom block rule identified in Security Events. Cloudflare’s user-agent rule documentation notes that traffic allowed by Zone Lockdown skips user-agent rules, so check for Zone Lockdown and other earlier controls when the expected rule does not run.
Leave unrelated WAF, rate-limit, authentication, and bot protections enabled. An allow rule for a screenshot path should not grant access to an entire hostname or to authenticated areas.

Test the exception safely
- Save or deploy the rule in the smallest possible scope.
- Run one ScreenshotNeo capture against the test URL.
- Return to Security → Events and confirm the request was allowed or skipped by the intended rule.
- Open the resulting image or PDF and verify that it is your page, not a Cloudflare challenge.
- Send ordinary browser traffic to the same hostname and nearby paths. Confirm it does not match the ScreenshotNeo exception.
- Test a URL outside the permitted path to ensure it remains protected.
Keep an audit note containing the identity source, date obtained, paths covered, rule ID, and an owner responsible for updates. Recheck after ScreenshotNeo changes its infrastructure or request headers.
Common failures and fixes
The screenshot still shows a challenge
Security Events may reveal that a different rule, Zone Lockdown policy, rate limit, or bot-management action ran first. Identify that rule and move the narrowly scoped Allow or Skip exception ahead of it. If the event shows a different source IP or header, obtain the current values from ScreenshotNeo rather than widening the rule blindly.
The rule never matches
Check hostname normalization, the exact URI path (including a trailing slash), IPv6 ranges, and whether the request reached the zone you edited. Compare the event’s user-agent and headers character-for-character with the operator documentation. A user-agent condition may also be bypassed or superseded by another control.
Allowing the user-agent creates a security concern
That concern is valid: a user-agent is spoofable. Replace it with Web Bot Auth, a signed/non-configurable header, or a validated IP range. Until then, keep the exception restricted to a public, low-risk path and add an independent source-IP or header condition.

Images are blank or incomplete
This may be an application or rendering issue rather than a Cloudflare block. Check that the page does not require authentication, that assets are available to the same identity, and that lazy-loaded content has time to render. Inspect the capture service’s response metadata and Cloudflare events for blocked subresources.
Requests fail after an IP change
Update the maintained IP list or expression with the operator’s new ranges, then retest. Avoid replacing a range with a broad autonomous-system or country allowlist, which can admit unrelated traffic.
Security, reliability, and maintenance guidance
- Minimize scope: allow only the required host and paths, and avoid account, admin, checkout, and internal API endpoints.
- Prefer verifiable identity: signed or platform-validated headers and documented IP ranges resist spoofing better than user-agent-only rules.
- Plan for rotation: assign an owner to monitor operator notices and update IP lists or keys before they expire.
- Observe continuously: review Security Events for unexpected matches and periodically test both an allowed capture and a protected URL.
- Keep origin controls: Cloudflare exceptions should not remove application authentication or authorization.
