To manage Wi‑Fi Direct on Windows devices, create a Windows 10 and later Settings catalog profile in Intune and configure Allow Wi‑Fi Direct. Set it to Enabled to allow Wi‑Fi Direct or Disabled to block it. Leaving it Not configured means Intune is not actively managing the setting.
This policy controls Wi‑Fi Direct—not ordinary Wi‑Fi connections. The steps below cover Windows; Android Enterprise has a separate setting with different behavior and applicability.
What Wi‑Fi Direct does—and what this policy controls
Wi‑Fi Direct lets compatible devices connect peer to peer without using a conventional wireless access point or router. It may support workflows such as wireless printing, device-to-device file transfer, synchronization, peripherals, and some wireless display or projection scenarios.
Windows’ AllowWiFiDirect policy is separate from the policy for ordinary Wi‑Fi. Blocking Wi‑Fi Direct does not, by itself, block a device from joining a normal Wi‑Fi network. Nor does it disable Bluetooth, USB transfers, every local-network path, or every kind of wireless display.

An organization might block Wi‑Fi Direct to reduce unapproved peer-to-peer transfer paths, limit unmanaged peripheral connections, or standardize restricted kiosks and shared devices. It may instead allow the feature when approved workflows depend on printing, projection, or specialized peripherals. This is one control in a broader security policy—not a guarantee that wireless risk or data transfer is eliminated.

Microsoft lists the CSP default as 1 (allowed). That does not mean a profile left Not configured is explicitly enforcing the value 1. The documented Windows Wi‑Fi Policy CSP details are in Microsoft’s WiFi Policy CSP reference.

Prerequisites and applicability
- The target device must be enrolled and managed by Intune, and you need an Intune role with permission to create and assign device configuration profiles.
- Microsoft documents this CSP from Windows 10 version 1703 (build 10.0.15063) onward, for Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions, including IoT Enterprise LTSC.
- The setting is device-scoped, so use a device group for assignment in the normal case.
- Pilot the change on representative hardware and workflows before broad rollout. Check Windows edition, build, servicing status, and Wi‑Fi driver behavior.
The CSP’s historical applicability is not the same as a current Windows servicing or Intune support guarantee. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025; validate your organization’s support requirements and the specific device’s status before deploying to older Windows 10 systems.

- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Go to Devices > Manage devices > Configuration > Create > New policy. Intune’s labels can evolve; the current policy-creation flow is also described in Microsoft’s configuration profile guidance.
- Select Platform: Windows 10 and later and Profile type: Settings catalog, then select Create.
- Give the profile a name that makes its effect clear, such as
Windows - Block Wi-Fi DirectorWindows - Allow Wi-Fi Direct. Add a description with the business reason, target devices, change record, review date, and rollback plan if applicable. - On Configuration settings, select Add settings. Search for Wi-Fi Direct, select the relevant Wi‑Fi setting/category, and add Allow Wi-Fi Direct.
- Choose Disabled to block the feature or Enabled to allow it. Use Not configured only when you intend for Intune not to manage this setting.
- Set scope tags if your organization uses them. Scope tags control administrative visibility and delegated administration; they do not decide which devices receive the profile.
- Assign the profile to the intended Microsoft Entra device group. A cautious rollout is pilot, early adopter, then production, with documented exclusions for approved exceptions. Review filters and exclusions as well as group membership.
- Review the platform, profile type, setting and state, assignments, exclusions, scope tags, name, and description, then select Create.
Avoid overlapping assignments that set the same control in contradictory ways. If different groups need different outcomes, define the targeting and exception model deliberately, and check for conflicts before expanding the rollout.

The Settings catalog provides the named control; the URI is useful when investigating the underlying policy or comparing it with a custom OMA-URI configuration. Do not configure both a catalog setting and a custom policy for the same CSP node unless your ownership and conflict approach are clear.
Monitor deployment and verify the result
Check Intune reporting first
Open the configuration profile’s status and inspect its device and user reporting. For a target device, confirm that it is in the assigned group, is not excluded by an assignment or filter, and has checked in recently. Look for a succeeded state rather than pending, conflict, error, or not applicable. Also check whether another profile configures the same policy.

You can request a sync from Intune or use Company Portal where appropriate to speed up a test. A manual sync does not guarantee immediate application: the device needs connectivity and access to Intune’s service endpoints. Organizations with strict outbound or IP-based filtering should validate their management connectivity against Microsoft’s current guidance, including the Intune documentation.
Inspect client-side events when needed
On Windows, open Event Viewer and navigate to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider > Admin. Event ID 813 is cited as a useful success signal in the HTMD procedure, but do not treat the event number alone as proof that Wi‑Fi Direct is blocked or allowed on every build. Read the message payload and correlate it with the expected policy and Intune report.

Test the actual workflow
Where practical, compare a controlled allowed device with a blocked device using the specific Wi‑Fi Direct workflow your organization cares about. Record the device model, Windows version, driver version, policy state, and result. If behavior does not change promptly, test again after a reboot where appropriate.
Make sure the test is genuinely using Wi‑Fi Direct. Ordinary Wi‑Fi association, Bluetooth, USB, Miracast, and infrastructure-based projection are not interchangeable tests. Wireless display may use different transport paths; Microsoft’s WirelessDisplay CSP documentation notes that some projection and discovery scenarios can continue over Wi‑Fi Direct even when infrastructure projection is disabled. Intune reporting that a policy succeeded confirms policy processing, not that every app, driver, and peripheral behaves identically.

Change, unassign, or delete the policy
- Change the enforced outcome: Edit the profile and switch Disabled to Enabled, or vice versa. This explicitly enforces the new choice.
- Stop managing the setting: Set it to Not configured if the goal is to stop explicitly enforcing it. The resulting state depends on the device’s remaining policy state and OS behavior; do not assume this is identical to explicitly allowing Wi‑Fi Direct.
- Stop targeting a group: Remove the group assignment or add an approved exclusion. A targeting change may not immediately restore an earlier unmanaged state, so verify after the device checks in.
- Delete the profile: Delete it only after confirming it is no longer needed, no dependent process relies on it, the rollback effect is understood, and no replacement profile will conflict. Deleting a profile and removing an assignment are different actions.
Windows and Android use different settings
This guide is for Windows. Intune separately documents Block Wi-Fi Direct for certain Android Enterprise corporate-owned modes: corporate-owned work profile (COPE), fully managed (COBO), and dedicated (COSU). That Android setting has its own semantics: True blocks Wi‑Fi Direct, while False leaves the setting unchanged and the OS default may allow it. See Microsoft’s Android settings catalog reference; do not substitute it for the Windows AllowWiFiDirect policy.
