To AirDrop an existing photo as a JPG, open it in Photos, tap Share, choose Options, select Most Compatible, tap Done, and then choose AirDrop. This converts the outgoing copy without changing the format of photos already stored in your library.
Send an existing HEIC photo as a JPG
- Open the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Select one or more photos.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Options near the top of the sharing screen.
- Under the file format options, select Most Compatible.
- Tap Done, then tap AirDrop and select the recipient.
Apple says Most Compatible may convert photos to JPEG and videos to MOV. It is the appropriate choice when the recipient, website, or application specifically requires a .jpg file. See Apple’s Photos sharing guidance.
What Automatic, Current, and Most Compatible mean

There is no separate AirDrop-wide setting that permanently forces every photo to JPEG. Apple provides the format choice in Photos’ sharing options rather than as a standalone AirDrop JPG switch.

Make future camera photos JPEG by default
If you regularly send photos to older software, Windows PCs, websites, or devices that do not handle HEIF well, change the camera’s capture format:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Choose Most Compatible.
New photos will use JPEG, and new videos will use H.264. This setting does not convert photos already in your library. Apple notes that HEIF and HEVC generally use less storage while providing comparable visual quality, so JPEG/H.264 trades storage efficiency for broader compatibility. Details are available in Apple’s HEIF and HEVC support article.
For one or two files, changing the camera setting is unnecessary. Keep High Efficiency enabled and use the per-share option instead. This also avoids changing the format of future video recordings.

Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac with Preview
Use this method when you want to retain the original HEIC, control JPEG quality, choose an exact destination, or convert many files:

- Open it in Preview.
- Choose File → Export.
- Open the Format menu and choose JPEG.
- Adjust the quality setting if needed.
- Choose the filename and destination, then click Save.
Preview can also convert multiple images. Open them in one Preview window, select the files in the sidebar, and export them together. Apple documents the process in its Preview export guide. Holding the Option key while opening the Format menu can reveal additional formats.

Preserve location, edits, and original data
Changing the format is separate from deciding what information to share. In Photos’ Options panel, review these controls before AirDropping:
- Location: Turn this off if you do not want to share location information.
- All Photos Data: When available, this can include the original file, metadata, and edit history. Apple says it is available with AirDrop and iCloud links.
For a routine website upload, you may want a straightforward rendered JPEG without extra original data. For professional editing or archival transfer, retaining the original may matter more. Metadata and edit-history behavior can vary by app, format, and destination, so do not assume every field survives conversion.

Live Photos, RAW, and edited images
A Live Photo is more than a single still image. A compatibility-focused share may deliver a conventional still image rather than preserve the motion component. If the motion matters, verify what the recipient received.

Similarly, do not assume that every RAW or ProRAW workflow becomes an ordinary JPEG simply by selecting a sharing format. Specialized formats and edit data may require an explicit rendered export. Edited photos can also be shared as their current appearance, as an original, or with additional edit data depending on the selected options and app.

If the recipient still receives HEIC
Check the workflow rather than changing the filename:
- Confirm that you selected Most Compatible, not Current or Automatic.
- Remember that changing Settings → Camera → Formats affects only new photos.
- Make sure you shared from Photos. A file shared from Files or another app may not use Photos’ format control.
- Check whether you sent an original or iCloud Photos item instead of a converted outgoing copy.
- The recipient’s app may display the image without showing its underlying extension.
- Verify the received file in Finder with Get Info or by opening it in Preview.
Renaming photo.heic to photo.jpg does not convert the image. The file remains HEIF and may become unreadable to software that trusts the extension.
If AirDrop itself is not working
For AirDrop, both devices should have Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth enabled and be within approximately 30 feet (10 meters). Check that the receiving device allows the sender under AirDrop settings. Current Apple documentation lists Contacts Only and Everyone for 10 Minutes as receiving choices.
If the device does not appear, temporarily choose the appropriate receiving option, confirm that both devices are awake and nearby, and restart them if necessary. Apple’s AirDrop troubleshooting guide covers these requirements. Apple also documents AirDrop codes for certain non-contact transfers on iOS 26.2, iPadOS 26.2, and macOS 26.2 or later; this is version-specific and is not a universal requirement.
Which method should you choose?

HEIF is commonly encountered with the .heic extension. It is not inherently a bad format: Apple supports it because it generally offers better compression than JPEG at comparable visual quality. JPEG is simply more widely accepted by older systems and strict upload forms.
