For a WooCommerce store, install the official WooCommerce PayPal Payments extension, connect a PayPal account, and configure its payment methods. Eligible U.S. customers may then see Venmo in PayPal checkout. Installing the extension alone does not guarantee Venmo will appear to every shopper.
What you need before setup
WooCommerce’s current startup guide lists WordPress 6.5 or newer, WooCommerce 9.6 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer, and a PayPal business or personal account. These compatibility requirements can change, so check the live WooCommerce guide before installing. The extension’s payment-processing fees are separate from any cost to install the extension.
How to add Venmo to WooCommerce
- In WordPress admin, go to Plugins > Add New, search for WooCommerce PayPal Payments, and install and activate the extension.
- Open the extension’s setup page and select Activate PayPal Payments. Follow the prompts to connect an existing PayPal account or create one.
- Choose the payment methods and checkout placements you want to offer. Settings vary between the current and legacy interfaces; if your store still shows legacy settings, follow WooCommerce’s legacy documentation rather than assuming the controls are in the same place.
- If available in your setup, use Sandbox Mode to run sample transactions before accepting live payments.
- Test the product, cart, and checkout flow using your actual theme and checkout configuration. Confirm that orders complete as expected, not just that a payment option is visible.
When customers can pay with Venmo
WooCommerce says PayPal Payments can automatically provide a Venmo option to eligible U.S. buyers. In its documented flow, customers may encounter it on product, cart, or checkout pages; selecting Venmo sends them to the Venmo app, and the funds are forwarded to the PayPal account connected to the store. PayPal’s developer documentation specifies U.S.-based merchants and consumers and payment in U.S. dollars for Venmo checkout. On mobile browser checkout, buyers need the Venmo app and Safari on iOS or Chrome on Android. A desktop checkout can present a QR code for scanning with the Venmo app.
Does Venmo need its own button on the website?
Not necessarily. Venmo’s help documentation says that accepting Venmo through PayPal online checkout does not add a separate Venmo payment button to a website. WooCommerce describes an automatically provided Venmo button in eligible PayPal Payments checkout placements. In practice, shoppers may see Venmo within the configured PayPal checkout experience; do not assume it will appear as a separate sitewide button in every layout.

What to check if Venmo is missing
- Buyer and transaction eligibility: Check that the buyer and merchant meet the U.S. eligibility conditions, that the transaction is in U.S. dollars, and that the buyer’s device and browser meet the applicable requirements.
- Payment method configuration: Review the extension’s enabled methods and express-checkout placements. PayPal checkout being active does not by itself mean Venmo will appear in every position.
- Theme or plugin conflict: Custom theme styling may need adjustment, and other checkout or payment plugins can conflict. WooCommerce recommends investigating in a staging environment and checking logs and support resources. A WooCommerce developer is an optional next step for a custom checkout conflict, not a prerequisite for adding Venmo.
These checks cover documented eligibility and common compatibility issues; they are not a complete diagnostic for every account-specific case.
Can you add Venmo to WordPress without WooCommerce?
Venmo identifies PayPal online checkout as an option for accepting Venmo payments. That is different from putting an ordinary Venmo username or payment link on a page and treating it as a general-purpose checkout: Venmo says not to use Venmo to complete purchases unless it has explicitly authorized that use. For a non-WooCommerce site, use a supported PayPal checkout integration if it fits your needs rather than presenting a personal payment link as a store payment system.

Alternative: PayPal Enterprise Payments (Braintree)
WooCommerce documents PayPal Enterprise Payments, formerly Braintree, as a separate gateway that can accept Venmo. It is not another set of settings inside the standard PayPal Payments setup.
- It requires a Braintree Direct account and SSL.
- Venmo must be enabled in the Braintree account, and the merchant must meet additional eligibility requirements, including having a U.S. business entity.
- The documented Venmo purchases are U.S. purchases in U.S. dollars.
Consider this route if your store already uses Braintree or has a reason to adopt that gateway; check its account-specific requirements before configuring it.

Fees and the retired PayPal Checkout extension
Venmo’s business page displayed a fee of 3.49% + $0.49 per U.S. transaction when accessed September 30, 2026, and said there was no setup or monthly fee. Venmo cautions that fees can change and other fees may apply. Treat that as the page’s published rate, not a guarantee for every seller or transaction; confirm the pricing that applies to your PayPal merchant account.
PayPal describes WooCommerce PayPal Payments as supporting PayPal, Venmo in the U.S., Pay Later, cards, and country-specific methods at no additional extension cost. That does not mean payment processing is free. PayPal says its older PayPal Checkout extension has not been available to download since July 2021 and recommends WooCommerce PayPal Payments instead.
