In the WordPress block editor, select an Image block, choose Add text over image, and replace the placeholder text. WordPress converts the image into a Cover block, where you can position the words, change the overlay, and adjust typography. You can also insert a Cover block directly with /cover.

Put text over an image with an Image block

  1. Open the post or page in the WordPress block editor. Insert an Image block from the inserter, type /image, upload a file, or choose one from the Media Library. The WordPress Image block guide documents these options.

  2. Select the image so its block toolbar is visible, then click Add text over image.

  3. WordPress changes the Image block into a Cover block and inserts placeholder text. Select that placeholder and type your headline, caption, or call to action.

  4. Open the Cover block settings to choose the text position, colors, overlay, typography, dimensions, and minimum height. The controls shown can differ by theme and editor configuration.

  5. Preview the post at the size visitors will see. If the words blend into the photograph, move the content or strengthen the overlay color or opacity before publishing.

Start with a Cover block instead

If you know the layout should be text over a background image, insert a Cover block directly: add a block and type /cover, select the image from an upload or the Media Library, then add a paragraph, heading, button, or other block inside it. WordPress describes the Cover block as a way to place a background color, image, or video behind a text overlay; see the Cover block documentation.

Make the overlay readable

Position the content

Use the Cover block’s content-position control to move the text away from a face, product, logo, or other high-detail area. A different position is often clearer than adding more styling.

Use the overlay controls

Adjust the overlay color and opacity when the source image has uneven brightness. Check both the desktop and narrow-screen previews, because a crop that looks clear on one screen can put text over a busy area on another.

Set dimensions and type

Use typography, minimum height, and dimension settings to give the message enough space. Keep the wording short enough to wrap naturally rather than forcing a long paragraph into a banner.

Add useful alternative text

For an informative image, enter a description in the block’s Alt text field. Alt text should explain the image’s relevant content, not simply repeat the words printed over it unless those words accurately describe the image’s purpose.

The value entered in the Image block settings applies to that image on the current post or page. A value saved in the Media Library supplies the default when the file is inserted elsewhere. The Cover block also provides an alternative-text field. See the Image block and Cover block guides for the documented fields.

Choose the right WordPress layout

Layout Use it when What it provides Important limitation
Cover The words belong on top of the image, such as a hero banner or call to action. Text over a background image or video, content positioning, overlay and color controls, typography, and dimensions. Exact controls and color choices can vary with the theme.
Media & Text The image and words should remain separate, side by side. A text area with normal text-editing controls that can also contain other blocks. It does not place the text over the image. See the Media & Text documentation.
Gallery You need a collection of images displayed together. A multi-image gallery layout. The overlay action may be absent or may not behave as expected for an Image block inside a Gallery. Use an individual Image-to-Cover conversion for a single overlay; see the Gallery block guide.
