To highlight code that visitors submit in WordPress comments, use a comment-specific solution or build a carefully tested integration around a highlighting library such as Prism.js. A plugin that highlights code blocks in posts is not automatically a comments solution: comment content has separate rendering and safety requirements.
Choose a comments solution, not just a code-block plugin
WordPress’s plugin directory lists Code Snippets in Comments as a comments-focused option. The directory result reports fewer than 10 active installations and says it was tested with WordPress 5.4.23. Those details are a reason to verify its present status, not evidence that it is maintained or compatible with your site today.
Before installing it, check the plugin’s current directory listing for its latest update, supported WordPress versions, support activity, and available code or security information. Try it on a staging copy first, then check both existing and newly submitted comments using your actual theme and moderation settings.

The directory description for Syntax-highlighting Code Block (with Server-side Rendering), for example, describes an extension to WordPress’s core Code block. Neither description establishes that a plugin highlights visitor-submitted comments.

What a custom Prism.js setup needs
Prism.js documents a markup pattern for highlighting code: put a language-xxxx class on the <code> element, and use a surrounding <pre> element for a block of code. For example, its documentation shows <pre><code class="language-css">p { color: red }</code></pre>. The class identifies the language Prism should highlight.
For code submitted in a comment, the site must reliably render the submitted sample into markup Prism can process. The markup alone is not a complete WordPress integration: it does not specify how to add language selection, preserve the expected comment filtering and sanitization, or handle comments that load after the page’s initial render.

Escape code characters correctly
Prism warns that literal < and & characters inside code elements must be escaped as < and &. Otherwise, a browser may interpret them as HTML markup or entities rather than as characters in the sample. Follow Prism’s documentation for the markup and escaping rules.
Since comments are visitor-provided content, do not weaken WordPress’s normal comment filtering or sanitization simply to make highlighting work. A custom integration needs a safe, site-specific implementation that retains those protections. The available documentation here establishes Prism’s markup and escaping requirements, but not a complete, drop-in WordPress comments hook or sanitization recipe; do not treat a generic JavaScript or PHP snippet as one.
Test the result before enabling it on a live site
Whether you choose a plugin or custom integration, test the exact ways comments appear on your site. Include a code sample with angle brackets and ampersands, a comment held for moderation, and any comment pagination or AJAX loading your site uses. Confirm that plain text remains readable, code is displayed as code rather than executed as markup, and comments rendered after the initial page load receive highlighting if that behavior is required.

There are no comparative performance measurements or compatibility results established here for a particular theme, plugin combination, or site configuration. Treat those as local checks: verify the behavior on staging with your theme, caching, moderation, and comment-loading setup before deploying.
