You can add subscriptions to WooCommerce with a free third-party plugin, but WooCommerce’s official Subscriptions extension is premium—not included free with WooCommerce. Options listed in the WordPress.org plugin directory include Flexible Subscriptions and Milo Subscriptions. Their listings describe recurring-payment features, but you should confirm current compatibility and gateway support for your store before choosing one.
Free WooCommerce subscription plugins at a glance
The following are candidates, not independently tested recommendations. Check each plugin’s current listing, update history, compatibility with your WooCommerce version and checkout, and the payment methods and renewal actions your store needs.

How to add subscriptions with a free plugin
Exact labels and controls depend on the plugin. Use the plugin’s current documentation for its specific product settings; do not assume that controls documented for WooCommerce Subscriptions also appear in a free alternative.
- Check the fit first. Confirm the plugin supports your installed WooCommerce version, checkout type, intended subscription lifecycle, and payment gateway. Make sure it supports the renewal model you want, as well as any needed cancellation, suspension, or customer self-service actions.
- Install and activate the plugin. In WordPress admin, open Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for the exact plugin name, select Install Now, then choose Activate. If the plugin’s listing or documentation requires a companion plugin or add-on, verify that requirement and install it as directed.
- Create or edit a product. Open Products → Add New, or edit an existing product. Find the subscription product type provided by the installed plugin, select it, then configure its recurring price and interval using that plugin’s documented controls.
- Set optional terms and payment behavior. If the plugin offers them, configure a free trial, signup fee, expiration, or plan-change options. Select a compatible payment gateway and check whether it supports automatic renewals or only manual renewals for subscriptions.
- Test before launch. In a safe staging or test environment, place a test subscription and check checkout, the customer’s subscription view, renewal behavior, failed-payment handling, and cancellation. Do not infer successful automatic renewals from a successful one-time checkout.
Choose automatic or manual renewals deliberately
Automatic renewal charges the saved payment method on the subscription schedule. Manual renewal requires the customer to pay when a renewal is due. Gateway support varies: an option that accepts a one-time WooCommerce order may not support recurring charges or subscription lifecycle actions.

WooCommerce’s payment gateway guide distinguishes gateways that support automatic payments, manual payments, or both for WooCommerce Subscriptions. Check the documentation for your chosen plugin and gateway rather than assuming that the official extension’s gateway list applies to a third-party plugin.

Recurring billing is not the same as membership access
A subscription plugin handles recurring billing. Membership functionality controls access to restricted content or benefits. WooCommerce describes these as distinct products: Memberships can sell fixed-length or fixed-date memberships, while recurring monthly or yearly billing and subscription features such as trials require Subscriptions. What to check before committing to a plugin
- Gateway and renewal support: Verify your exact gateway and payment method for automatic or manual renewals.
- Subscription lifecycle: Check support for trials, signup fees, plan changes, cancellations, suspensions, and customer self-service as needed.
- Compatibility: Confirm current compatibility with your WooCommerce version, checkout, and other store extensions.
- Migration and portability: Find out how subscription and customer data can be exported or migrated if you switch plugins.
- Maintenance and total cost: Review update and support history, required add-ons, and likely implementation and support costs. A free plugin does not mean payment processing or operating the store has no cost; no universal fee amount is established here.
Official WooCommerce product settings are not universal
WooCommerce’s guide for its premium extension places subscription purchase choices and recurring price and schedule settings in product data. It documents daily, weekly, monthly, and annual billing periods, with a frequency from one to six, along with optional expiry, signup fees, free trials, gifting, and billing-date alignment. Those controls describe WooCommerce Subscriptions; do not assume a free third-party plugin offers the same settings.
