Yoast SEO adds Schema.org structured data automatically. You usually do not paste JSON-LD by hand. Instead, identify your site as a person or organization, leave Yoast’s Schema Framework enabled, set accurate content-type defaults, and use the FAQ or HowTo blocks only when the visible page really contains that content. Then inspect the rendered source to confirm that one connected graph is being produced.
What Yoast SEO adds automatically
Yoast SEO’s schema implementation describes a page with a connected Schema.org graph rather than a collection of unrelated snippets. Its documented output can include WebPage, Article, BreadcrumbList, ImageObject, Organization or Person, and context-dependent types such as FAQPage, HowTo, Product and Review. The exact graph depends on your site representation, content, integrations and valid settings. See Yoast’s implementation guide at Yoast’s Schema implementation documentation.
This markup helps search engines understand entities and page relationships. It does not guarantee a ranking increase or a rich result; eligibility and display are controlled by the search engine and by whether your markup accurately matches the visible content.
Before you change a setting
- Use an administrator account with access to Yoast SEO settings and the WordPress editor.
- Make sure the information shown on the site—organization name, logo, author, titles, images and navigation—is correct.
- Remove or identify other plugins or themes that output their own JSON-LD. Duplicate or conflicting graphs make maintenance and debugging harder.
- Decide which pages are genuinely articles, FAQs, procedures, products or other supported content. Schema type should describe the page, not the result you hope to obtain.
Step 1: Set the site representation
In WordPress, open Yoast SEO → Settings and complete the site-representation fields. Choose whether the site represents an organization or a person, then provide the requested name, logo or personal details. This information supplies the entity context that Yoast connects to your pages. If the organization changes its name or logo, update this setting rather than adding a second hand-written organization object.

Yoast explains the entity and graph relationships in its implementation guide. Keep the details consistent with what visitors can see on the site and with your other official profiles.
Step 2: Keep the Schema Framework enabled
Go to Yoast SEO → Settings → Advanced → Schema. Leave Enable Schema Framework switched on. Yoast says the framework builds a single, connected Schema graph; disabling it removes the mechanism that links the page, author, site and related entities.
Only turn it off when you have a documented replacement that produces a complete, tested graph and you understand which Yoast connections you are losing. Running two full schema systems at once is not a safe replacement strategy.
Step 3: Choose content-type defaults
Open the content-type settings for Posts or Pages under Yoast SEO → Settings. Set a default only when it accurately describes most items of that type. Yoast’s documented defaults are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| WordPress content | Yoast default description | When to review it |
|---|---|---|
| Pages | WebPage |
Landing pages, contact pages and evergreen information pages may use this default. |
| Posts | Article plus WebPage |
Review if the post type is used for something other than editorial articles. |
These are defaults, not a command to label every item identically. A global change does not overwrite content that already has an individual non-default schema setting, so audit existing exceptions after changing a default. Yoast documents the controls in its content-type schema settings guide.
Step 4: Override one page or post when its type differs
- Open the page or post in the WordPress editor.
- Open the Yoast SEO sidebar or meta box.
- Find the Schema controls and select the valid page type that best matches the content.
- Update or publish the item, then inspect the rendered source.
Use an override for a real exception—for example, a procedural page inside a site whose posts normally use Article. Do not select FAQPage merely because a page has a few questions in its copy; it needs a genuine set of questions and answers visible to users. Likewise, a page should not be labeled HowTo unless it presents an actual sequence of instructions.

Step 5: Add FAQ and HowTo markup with the matching blocks
FAQ content
For a page that is truly a list of questions and answers, insert Yoast’s FAQ block in the editor and enter each question and answer in the block fields. The block adds the corresponding structured-data pieces automatically. Keep the complete answers visible on the page and synchronized with the block; editing only one version creates an accuracy problem.
How-to content
For a step-by-step procedure, insert Yoast’s HowTo block, define the steps in order and add any supported details such as images, duration or supplies when they are available in the block. The instructions must be usable by a visitor without relying on hidden text. A generic article with a paragraph of tips is not a HowTo.

Yoast describes these structured-data blocks at yoast.com/features/structured-data-blocks/. Search features and eligibility can change, so treat the markup as a clear description of your content rather than a promise of a special result.
Step 6: Implement breadcrumbs when they help navigation
Breadcrumbs are useful when they reflect the site’s real hierarchy. In Yoast, configure them under Yoast SEO → Settings → Advanced → Breadcrumbs (the exact screen can vary with the WordPress and Yoast interface). You must also place the breadcrumb function in your theme or use the integration method described in Yoast’s documentation so visitors can see it.
When displayed, Yoast outputs BreadcrumbList JSON-LD in the page source. Search engines may use that information for breadcrumb displays. Follow the breadcrumb settings guide and the implementation instructions rather than adding a second breadcrumb graph.
Step 7: Check integrations and developer extensions
Yoast lists integrations for The Events Calendar, Seriously Simple Podcasting, WP Recipe Maker, Yoast WooCommerce SEO and Easy Digital Downloads. These integrations can add schema components when the associated content and plugin are present. Review the integration’s output after updates because the graph is context-dependent.

If you need a type or property that Yoast does not expose in the editor, use its documented Schema API and filters to extend the existing graph. The developer documentation is at developer.yoast.com/features/schema/plugins/yoast-seo/. Integrate additional pieces into Yoast’s graph instead of printing a separate, duplicate JSON-LD block.
Which schema approach should you use?
| Requirement | Recommended Yoast method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Normal information page | Page default, usually WebPage |
Describes the page without claiming a specialized format. |
| Editorial blog post | Post default, usually Article plus WebPage |
Connects article information to its containing page. |
| Visible questions and answers | FAQ block | Generates FAQ-related data from the content visitors read. |
| Visible numbered procedure | HowTo block | Captures ordered steps and optional details. |
| Hierarchical site navigation | Yoast breadcrumbs | Produces navigation markup tied to the displayed trail. |
| Specialized plugin content | Supported Yoast integration | Extends the graph with context supplied by that plugin. |
| Custom entity or property | Schema API or documented filter | Requires developer access and testing to avoid invalid or duplicate output. |
Validate the rendered result
- Save or publish the page after making the change.
- Open the public URL in a browser, view the page source and search for
application/ld+json. - Confirm that the graph contains the expected page, site and person or organization entities, and that URLs, names, images and dates match the visible page.
- Check that FAQ or HowTo nodes contain every visible item and that breadcrumb positions follow the displayed trail.
- Look for a second plugin or theme emitting another copy of the same entities. Disable or integrate the duplicate at its source.
- Recheck representative pages after Yoast, WordPress, theme or integration updates.
Validation confirms syntax and consistency; it cannot force a search engine to show a rich result. Yoast’s guidance emphasizes matching the markup to visible content and integrating custom schema with its graph.
Troubleshooting common problems
No JSON-LD appears
Confirm the Schema Framework is enabled at Yoast SEO → Settings → Advanced → Schema, clear page and CDN caches, and inspect the public page rather than an editor preview. A security or optimization plugin may also be stripping scripts.
The wrong type is shown
Check the content-type default and then the individual page’s Schema control. An existing per-item override takes precedence over a later global default change. Select a type that matches the visible content.

Open the corresponding Yoast block and compare every field with the rendered text. Do not hide answers or steps from visitors while leaving them in the structured data. If the page is not genuinely an FAQ or procedure, remove the specialized block and use the normal page or article description.
Duplicate organization, article or breadcrumb markup
Search the source for multiple JSON-LD scripts and identify which plugin or theme generated each one. Keep Yoast’s connected graph and remove the redundant generator, or use Yoast’s Schema API to add the required property inside the existing graph.
Breadcrumbs are configured but not visible
Setting the options alone does not place breadcrumbs in every theme. Follow Yoast’s implementation instructions, add the function or integration in the appropriate template, then verify both the visual trail and its BreadcrumbList data.
A rich result does not appear
First confirm that the markup is valid, complete and consistent with the page. Search engines decide independently whether and how to display enhanced results, and Yoast’s documentation does not provide a guaranteed uplift figure.

Performance and maintenance considerations
Yoast’s connected graph avoids the maintenance burden of hand-writing separate JSON-LD for every page. The trade-off is that changes to authors, images, templates and integrations can change the graph, so include source inspection in release checks. Keep one authoritative source for each entity, document any Schema API filters, and test representative post, page, FAQ, HowTo and breadcrumb URLs after plugin updates.
Or skip the browser setup
Schema still has to be implemented in WordPress, but you can use ScreenshotNeo to capture the public page and inspect the rendered result without configuring a headless browser. Its API accepts one GET request and can return a PNG, JPEG or WebP screenshot or a PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://freedom251.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://freedom251.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://freedom251.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every feature is on every plan: 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. FAQ
Can I add schema by editing a theme’s header.php file?
You can, but it creates a separate maintenance path and can duplicate Yoast’s entities. Prefer Yoast’s settings, blocks, integrations or Schema API so additions remain connected to its graph.
Best Value
Does changing a schema default rewrite old posts?
No. Yoast notes that content with an individual non-default setting is not overwritten by a global default change. Review exceptions explicitly when changing defaults.
Should every page include FAQ, HowTo and Article types?
No. Use only the type supported by the page’s visible purpose and content. Combining unrelated types to obtain more markup can make the description inaccurate.
