You do not need a plugin: open Posts > All Posts, hover a post title, choose Quick Edit, change the available fields, and click Update.
Use WordPress’s built-in Quick Edit
- Sign in to your WordPress Dashboard.
- Go to Posts > All Posts. Use the search box, date/category filters, or status links if the post is not immediately visible.
- Hover over the post title. The row actions appear beneath it.
- Click Quick Edit.
- Change the fields you need, then select Update to save. Select Cancel to discard the inline changes.
WordPress describes this as an immediate action on one post performed from the Quick Edit link beneath its title in the posts table. See the official Posts screen documentation (updated June 8, 2024).
Fields available in a post’s Quick Edit panel
The core Posts screen documentation lists these controls:
- Title
- Slug
- Date
- Author
- Password or private-post setting
- Categories
- Tags
- Allow comments
- Allow pings
- Status
- Make the post sticky
The exact panel can differ by post type, user permissions, site configuration, and plugins. A custom post type or plugin may remove, rename, or add controls, so do not assume every WordPress installation has the same list.

Quick Edit versus Bulk Edit
Quick Edit changes one post. To change several posts, select their checkboxes in Posts > All Posts, choose Edit from the Bulk actions menu, and click Apply.

Use the full editor by clicking the post title or its Edit link when you need to change content or a setting that the inline panel does not expose.

When Quick Edit is missing
Check your access
Your account must be allowed to access the Posts administration screen. WordPress identifies the edit_posts capability as the relevant permission; roles or custom capability settings can restrict it. See Roles and Capabilities for the permissions model.
Reveal the row action correctly
Quick Edit appears beneath the title when you hover the row in the posts table. If you are using a keyboard, touch device, accessibility tool, or a heavily customized admin theme, the interaction may differ by WordPress version and site configuration; use the current row controls or open the full editor.

Use Screen Options for the table, not for new Quick Edit fields
Screen Options at the top of the All Posts screen can show or hide table columns and change how many posts appear per page. They do not add arbitrary fields to the Quick Edit panel.
Confirm that it is a post
Pages have a separate workflow at Pages > All Pages. Hover a page title and choose Quick Edit. The Pages panel includes page-specific fields such as Parent, Order, and Template, alongside common settings. The official reference is the Pages screen documentation.

Adding a custom control: what to verify first
If you need a field supplied by a plugin or custom post type, first check that the field’s author explicitly supports Quick Edit. Core Quick Edit does not provide a universal switch that turns any custom metadata field into an inline control.
- Identify the exact post type and plugin that owns the field.
- Check whether its documentation provides a version-matched Quick Edit integration.
- Confirm your account can edit that post type and metadata.
- Test saving, validation, permissions, and revisions on a staging site before changing production content.
WordPress developer references document filters that affect Quick Edit availability and some author-dropdown behavior, but they are not, by themselves, a complete recipe for adding arbitrary custom metadata. Avoid copying an unverified snippet: the required hooks, nonce handling, sanitization, and save logic depend on the implementation.

Which editing route should you choose?
- Quick Edit: one post and a small set of inline metadata changes.
- Bulk Edit: selected posts when its narrower field set is sufficient.
- Full editor: post content or settings absent from the inline panel.
- Plugin/custom implementation: a custom field only when its post type or plugin documents and supports that integration.
