Yes—you can become Steam friends without spending $5. A limited account cannot send a normal friend request, but it can accept a request from an unrestricted account or use a Steam Quick Invite link. Steam says limited accounts can use Quick Invite links, so that is the best first option—even if both accounts are limited.
Why the normal Add Friend button may be unavailable
Steam restricts some Community features on accounts that have not made at least $5 USD (or the equivalent in the account’s store currency) in qualifying Steam spending. Steam says the limits help reduce spam, phishing, scams, and abuse from disposable accounts. A limited account cannot send a conventional friend request from someone’s profile, but it can still accept invitations and use Quick Invite links. Method 1: Send a Quick Invite link
A Quick Invite link lets the other person open and accept an invitation without you sending a standard request. Steam documents this option for limited accounts.

- Choose Invite Friends or Invite Link, depending on the client.
- Generate or copy the link, then send it privately to the person you want to add.
- Ask them to open the link while signed in to the Steam account they want to connect and accept the invitation.
In the Steam Mobile app, Steam documents the path as top-left menu → Add a Friend → Invite Link. Desktop labels and placement can vary between client versions. Steam’s mobile instructions show the mobile route.

Steam’s guidance also says limited accounts can create Quick Invite links. That means two limited-account users can try this route without either one first making a qualifying purchase.
Method 2: Ask an unrestricted friend to send you a request
If someone you know has an unrestricted Steam account, ask them to find your profile and send the invitation. You can share your profile URL or Steam ID privately, or have them search the Steam Community.

- Your friend opens your Steam Community profile.
- They select Add Friend and send the request.
- You sign in to the account that received it, open the pending invitation, and select Accept.
A limited account can receive and accept an invitation from another user. For this conventional request route, the sender needs to be able to send requests; a limited account cannot use that normal method. For ways to find a profile, see Steam’s Friends List guidance.

- Adding at least $5 to your Steam Wallet.
- Buying a game or other eligible item through the Steam store, with qualifying purchases totaling the threshold.
- Redeeming an eligible Steam Wallet card worth at least $5.
- Buying a Steam gift in the store worth at least $5.
The key is qualifying spending credited to the account—not merely having played a game or acquired one through another route. A purchase must finish processing; pending or processing payments do not count yet. Outside the United States, Steam uses the equivalent in the account’s store currency and calculates conversion using the exchange rate on the transaction date, so there is no single local-currency amount that applies everywhere.
What does not unlock a limited account?
Steam says these actions do not count toward removing the restrictions:

- Downloading or activating a free game, playing a demo, or using a free-weekend offer.
- Adding a non-Steam game shortcut to your library.
- Spending Steam Wallet funds earned by selling items on the Community Market.
- Receiving a gift that the recipient has not redeemed.
So, a free-to-play game or a game key may give you access to a game without qualifying as Steam-store spending. Steam distinguishes redeeming an eligible Wallet card from simply receiving a gift; do not assume every gift or Steam-related transaction counts. Check Steam’s current list of qualifying and non-qualifying activity if you are considering a purchase specifically to lift the limits.
If an invite link or request does not work
- Generate a fresh link. If an old link is invalid or no longer works, create another from the Add a Friend area.
- Check the signed-in account. The recipient should be logged in to the Steam account they intend to add before opening the link.
- Try a different route to open it. If the link launches the wrong app or browser, copy it into a desktop browser or use the Steam Mobile app’s invite flow.
- Check whether you are already friends. Look at the Friends List before sending another invitation.
- Make sure you are using an invite link, not a normal request. Limited status still blocks the conventional request route.
- For a profile-based request, help the sender identify the right profile. Share your profile URL or Steam ID privately, and ask an unrestricted friend to confirm they have the correct account.
- If Steam itself seems stuck, restart the client, sign out and back in, update Steam, and retry. A temporary service or client issue can affect the flow.
If you have spent money but your account still appears limited, confirm you are checking the same account that made the purchase, that the transaction fully processed, and that the activity was qualifying store spending rather than a key redemption or Market-funded purchase. Steam does not promise that every account’s status updates at the same moment; consult its limited-account page to check recorded qualifying spending.

Use only Steam’s own client and support pages for account actions. Do not give anyone your password, Steam Guard code, or session information to generate a link or “unlock” your account.
Do you need to spend $5 eventually?
Not to add one friend if a Quick Invite link or incoming request works. Spending at least the qualifying threshold is relevant if you also want the broader Community access limited accounts lack, such as sending ordinary friend requests and using features including the Community Market or trading. If you only want to play together once, a game’s own lobby, party, or invite system may be enough—but that does not necessarily add the other person to your Steam Friends List.
