You can start an Apple Note from the iPhone Lock Screen using Control Center, a compatible Lock Screen control, or a Shortcuts widget. Apple’s built-in Notes app is not documented as offering a conventional Lock Screen widget that keeps a full note visible like a sticky note. The right method depends on whether you want to capture a note quickly or keep text on screen.
Start a note from the Lock Screen with Control Center
For quick capture, add the available Notes or Quick Note control to Control Center, then allow Control Center to open while the phone is locked. Apple’s guide explains how to access Control Center from the Lock Screen and manage Lock Screen access: Control Center and the Lock Screen and Allow access when locked.
- Open Settings > Control Center and add Quick Note or the Notes control if it appears in the available controls.
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. Under Allow Access When Locked, turn on Control Center.
- Wake the iPhone without unlocking it. On Face ID models, swipe down from the top-right corner; on Home-button models, swipe up from the bottom edge. Apple documents these gestures in its Control Center instructions.
- Tap the Notes or Quick Note control. If prompted, choose whether to create a new note or continue with the last note.
The available control name and the choices shown can vary by iOS version, model, and region. A Lock Screen launch is intended for rapid capture, but iOS may still require authentication for some actions, accounts, or protected notes. Apple Notes supports content such as text, checklists, tables, images, scans, drawings, and links; see Apple’s guide to creating and formatting notes.
Choose whether Lock Screen access starts fresh or resumes
Where the option is available, open Settings > Apps > Notes on current layouts, or Settings > Notes on older ones. Look for Access Notes from Lock Screen and choose Always Create New Note or Resume Last Note. If the setting is hard to find, search Settings for “Access Notes from Lock Screen.” The menu location differs across releases; Apple’s current setting explanation is in its Notes settings guide.
Put a Quick Note control on the Lock Screen
On compatible iOS versions and devices, you can replace one of the two controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen. Apple documents how to customize these controls in its iPhone Lock Screen guide. The exact choices in the control gallery are not universal.

- Wake the iPhone and touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Tap Customize, then choose Lock Screen.
- Tap the bottom control you want to replace and remove its existing control.
- Tap Add a Control, then search for Quick Note, Notes, or a relevant Notes shortcut.
- Select the control, then tap Done.
If you have several saved Lock Screens or Focus-linked Lock Screens, customize the one you actually use. Availability of a Quick Note control depends on the iOS version, model, and region; iOS 18 coverage describes this option, but it should not be assumed to appear on every iPhone. Use a Shortcuts widget to create a note
If the Notes control is missing, a shortcut using Apple’s Create Note action can provide a Lock Screen launch point. Treat this as a way to start a note, not as a guaranteed way to edit existing Notes content without unlocking.

Create the shortcut
- Open Shortcuts and tap +.
- Tap Add Action, search for Create Note, and add the action.
- If the action offers a destination, select the Notes folder or account where you want new notes saved. This matters if you use iCloud, On My iPhone, Gmail, Exchange, or multiple Notes accounts.
- Rename the shortcut, for example New Lock Screen Note, and tap Done.
Add it to the Lock Screen
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, and choose Lock Screen.
- Tap the widget area below the clock and add the Shortcuts widget.
- Tap the widget, select your new shortcut, and tap Done.
- Test the shortcut from the Home Screen first, then try it from the Lock Screen. Confirm that it saves to the intended account or folder.
A shortcut may require authentication, and a shortcut that merely opens Notes may not show a keyboard or create a new note. Make sure the action is Create Note and the Lock Screen widget points to the intended shortcut. The workflow is described in this Shortcuts and Quick Notes guide.
Keep specific text visible on the Lock Screen
If you want a particular note to remain readable at a glance, rather than a way to create or open a note, Apple Notes is not the same as a sticky-note Lock Screen widget. The built-in Notes widget for the Home Screen is a separate widget system; adding it there does not make it a Lock Screen widget. The distinction is also discussed in this sticky-notes overview.
- Reminders widget: Use it for a short prompt or task. It is a reminder, not a full Apple Note.
- Shortcuts widget: Use it to open or create a note; it is not designed to display long note text.
- Third-party note widget: Consider this if persistent, styled text is essential. For example, Cheatsheet: Sticky Note Widget has an App Store listing describing Lock Screen widgets, while WidgetNote describes note widgets and sharing. Check current compatibility, data handling, permissions, and any in-app subscription terms before relying on either app.
- Wallpaper image: A note rendered into an image stays static and cannot be edited as a note; the clock or widgets may obscure parts of it.
Do not put passwords, private medical information, financial details, or confidential work text in a widget that displays on the Lock Screen. Anyone who can see the screen may see its contents. Apple also warns that Lock Screen access and widgets can expose personal information; review its Lock Screen access guidance.

Fix a missing control or a shortcut that does not work
- No Notes control in Control Center: Search the gallery for Quick Note, Notes, or Create Note. If none appears, use the Shortcuts method; control availability varies.
- Control Center will not open while locked: Check Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and enable Control Center under Allow Access When Locked.
- Lock Screen button is missing: Confirm that your iPhone and iOS version support the control, and search the control gallery. Apple’s guide describes replacement controls but does not guarantee a particular Notes control for every device.
- Widget appears on the wrong screen: Reopen Lock Screen customization and check that you edited the active Lock Screen, especially if Focus modes switch between saved screens.
- Shortcut opens Notes but does not create a note: Check that it uses Create Note, is assigned to the Lock Screen widget, and targets the account or folder you expect. Test it while unlocked to identify any authentication or account-selection prompt.
- A control was added but does not appear: Remove and re-add it, restart the iPhone, and check for an available iOS update.

Protect Notes when enabling Lock Screen access
To remove convenient access, turn off Control Center or other Lock Screen features under Allow Access When Locked in the passcode settings. Notes locked with a device passcode or a separate Notes password remain a distinct security feature; Lock Screen shortcuts do not bypass that protection. See Apple’s explanation of locking notes.
