The safest way to add IndexNow to WordPress is to check whether your current SEO plugin already supports it, then enable that integration instead of installing a second one. If nothing on the site provides IndexNow, install the official WordPress.org IndexNow plugin for automatic notifications, or configure the protocol manually with an API key and publicly hosted key file.
IndexNow sends search engines a notice when a URL is created, changed, or deleted. It does not force a crawl or guarantee indexing: as Bing’s IndexNow FAQ puts it, “Using IndexNow does not guarantee that web pages will be crawled or indexed.”
Choose the right WordPress setup route
Start by checking your hosting control panel, WordPress installation and active SEO plugin. Bing’s IndexNow setup guidance lists the dedicated IndexNow plugin and integrations associated with Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO and SEOPress. Feature names and menu locations can change, so use the documentation for the version installed on your site before following a menu path.
| Route | Key handling | URL events | Visibility controls | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Existing SEO plugin | Depends on the plugin; verify its current documentation | Depends on the plugin | Depends on the plugin | A site that already runs a supported SEO plugin |
| WordPress.org IndexNow plugin | Generates and hosts the key automatically | Created, updated and deleted URLs, submitted in the background | Listing says it respects noindex directives and WordPress-wide search visibility | The simplest dedicated setup |
| Manual protocol setup | You generate the key and host its file | You submit changed URLs through an IndexNow endpoint | You must ensure your own workflow excludes URLs that should not be indexed | Sites without a suitable plugin integration |
Do not enable two independent integrations without checking how they behave. Duplicate notifications are unnecessary and make troubleshooting harder.
#1 Best Overall
Option 1: Enable IndexNow in an existing SEO plugin
- Identify the active SEO plugin. In WordPress, review the installed and active plugins, then check that plugin’s current IndexNow documentation.
- Confirm that IndexNow is included in your edition and version. The available setup guidance names Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO and SEOPress, but it does not establish identical features or menu labels for every version.
- Enable the integration using the plugin’s documented settings. Check which events it submits, whether key creation and hosting are automatic, and how it treats noindex URLs and WordPress search visibility.
- Publish a genuine change and verify receipt. Use Bing Webmaster Tools to check whether a recent added, changed or deleted URL was received.
This route usually avoids a second plugin, but the exact automation and reporting depend on the SEO plugin you selected.
Option 2: Install the dedicated WordPress.org IndexNow plugin
The WordPress.org listing describes an automatic setup that generates and hosts an API key, detects URL changes and submits notifications in the background.
Rank #2
- Open Plugins > Add New in the WordPress dashboard.
- Search for IndexNow Plugin, install it and activate it.
- Open the plugin’s administration page and select Let’s Get Started!.
- Allow the plugin to complete key generation and hosting, then review its status or activity information.
- Create, update or delete a test URL and check Bing Webmaster Tools for a received notification.
According to the plugin listing, it detects created, updated and deleted URLs, submits them automatically and avoids submitting URLs that should not be indexed. That includes pages marked noindex and pages affected by WordPress-wide search-visibility settings. The plugin’s behavior and interface can change, so confirm the current listing and in-dashboard documentation after installation.
Option 3: Configure IndexNow manually
Manual configuration is useful when neither the site’s host nor its plugins provides IndexNow support. It requires more responsibility: you must manage the key file and ensure your publishing system sends notifications only for relevant URLs.
Rank #3
Manual prerequisites
- A valid IndexNow API key.
- A UTF-8 text file containing that key.
- The key file publicly reachable on the same host as the URLs being submitted.
- A process that sends the full URL of each added, updated or deleted page to an IndexNow endpoint, together with the key.
Host the key file
Place the UTF-8 key file where it can be requested publicly. If it is in the site root, the notification can use that standard location. If it is somewhere else, identify the file’s location with the keyLocation value in the notification. Test the file in an unauthenticated browser session or with an HTTP request and confirm that it returns the key text rather than a login page, redirect loop or error.
Send notifications for changes
When a page is added, updated or deleted, submit its complete URL to an IndexNow endpoint with the API key. Your implementation should trigger notifications from the site’s actual publishing events rather than attempting to send the entire historical sitemap.
Rank #4
IndexNow’s official guidance says to publish URLs that change from the time you start using the protocol. Enabling IndexNow is not a reason to submit every old URL.

Verify that WordPress is notifying search engines
- Check for an existing submission first. If another plugin or host integration is active, identify it before adding a manual implementation.
- Make one controlled change. Update a test page that is intended to be searchable, and record its full URL and the time of the change.
- Check Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing directs site owners there to see whether recently added, changed and deleted URLs are being received.
- For manual setups, open the key file directly. Confirm it is publicly accessible, contains the exact key and is hosted on the same host. If it is outside the root, confirm that
keyLocationpoints to it. - Interpret acceptance correctly. A received or accepted notification proves that the message was processed; it is not proof that the page has been crawled or indexed.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
No notification appears
- Check whether IndexNow is already enabled through an SEO plugin or host, and inspect that integration’s status.
- Confirm that the URL actually changed after IndexNow was enabled. Historical URLs are not automatically required submissions.
- For manual implementations, verify the key, the public key-file response, the same-host requirement and the submitted full URL.
A page is never submitted
The page may be intentionally excluded. The dedicated plugin says it respects noindex directives and WordPress’s site-wide search-visibility setting. Review the page’s robots or indexing controls before treating the omission as an error.
Best Value
The notification is accepted but search results do not change
That is expected behavior. IndexNow is a notification protocol, not an indexing command. Search engines decide whether and when to crawl and index a URL, and Bing notes that changes can take time to appear in search.
What IndexNow can—and cannot—speed up
IndexNow can reduce the delay between a WordPress change and a search engine learning that the URL changed, compared with waiting for discovery through ordinary crawling. The available official setup material does not establish a guaranteed time savings or a fixed indexing interval.
Quick Recap
- It can do: notify participating search engines about added, updated and deleted URLs.
- It cannot do: guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or a particular publication time in search results.
- Your content still matters: technical eligibility, noindex settings, site visibility and the search engine’s own decisions remain in force.
