The simplest way to connect more devices to a TV is usually an HDMI switch: plug several sources into the switch, then connect its single output to one TV HDMI input. You select which source to watch; the TV still sees one input, and normally only one source appears at a time. A splitter usually does the reverse, sending one source to multiple displays.
Choose a switch for the most demanding device in your setup—not just the TV’s resolution. Check 4K/120, HDR, VRR, HDCP, and ARC/eARC requirements before buying, because a switch becomes part of the signal and audio path.
What “adding HDMI ports” actually means
You generally cannot add physical HDMI sockets to a television through a setting or passive adapter. An external switch expands the number of selectable sources that can use one existing TV input:

Blu-ray player ┘The switch routes one selected source to the TV. It does not turn that one TV input into several independent inputs, and it does not usually let you view two sources at once. A powered switch is generally the safer choice for remote control, automatic switching, EDID management, or higher-bandwidth signals. A passive adapter or Y-cable is not a substitute for a switch.

Switch, splitter, matrix, or AV receiver?

Product listings sometimes use “splitter” loosely. Check the port labels and diagram: a switch has several INPUT ports and one OUTPUT to the TV. A splitter has one input and multiple outputs.
How many inputs should you buy?
Count your current sources—consoles, streaming devices, disc players, cable boxes, and PCs—then add devices you may reasonably use during the TV’s remaining life. Include any receiver or soundbar connection that occupies a TV HDMI port, and leave one input free if practical. A 4×1 switch has four inputs and one output; “4×1” does not mean four new TV sockets. Four inputs are often more convenient than two, especially if replacing a switch later would mean redoing the wiring.
Match the switch to your devices
Start with the highest-demand source and the TV port you plan to use. The least capable component in the path can constrain the result: source, switch, cable, and display all matter.
For 1080p or 4K/60
An 18 Gbps, HDMI 2.0-class switch with HDCP 2.2 is often appropriate for 4K at 60 Hz, many streaming devices, and older consoles. Confirm HDR or Dolby Vision support separately; “4K” alone does not promise either. For example, AV Access lists its 4×1 4KSW41-H2 as supporting 4K/60, HDR, Dolby Vision, and HDCP 2.2 (manufacturer specifications). That is an example of a feature set, not a universal recommendation.

For 4K/120 gaming
For a PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or high-refresh-rate PC, look for explicit support for 4K/120, VRR, ALLM, HDR, and HDCP 2.3, plus a stated bandwidth suitable for the modes you intend to use. Many products in this category advertise up to 48 Gbps, but actual bandwidth requirements vary with color depth, chroma subsampling, and other signal choices. Verify the complete feature list rather than assuming that “HDMI 2.1” guarantees every feature. The HDMI Forum identifies HDMI Specification 2.2 as the newest specification on its overview page, but the version number is not a substitute for checking an individual product’s capabilities (HDMI specifications).
Do not assume an “8K” label means the switch supports 4K/120, VRR, or ALLM. Confirm those exact claims and use suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cables where required.
Check HDCP for protected 4K video
HDCP is content-protection authentication used by many commercial video sources. A 4K streaming device or UHD Blu-ray player may require HDCP 2.2 compatibility throughout the relevant HDMI path. If one component cannot authenticate, you may see a black screen, an HDCP warning, dropouts, or a lower-resolution picture. Roku explains that an incompatible component in a 4K path can reduce playback resolution (HDCP and 4K HDR; 4K setup guidance). Use compliant equipment; do not try to bypass content protection.

Consider control and EDID features
A physical button or infrared remote is a useful fallback. Automatic switching can be convenient, but a device waking from standby or sending a control command may unexpectedly change the active source. HDMI-CEC carries device-control commands, sometimes including power, volume, or input changes. Manufacturers use names such as Samsung Anynet+, Sony BRAVIA Sync, and LG SIMPLINK. CEC behavior varies, and it does not guarantee that one remote will control every function; Roku notes that some operations may still need the original remote (Roku HDMI and CEC settings).

EDID is the exchange through which a display reports its supported video and audio formats. Some switches offer Auto, Copy, or fixed-resolution/audio modes. These can help when devices disagree about capabilities, but a fixed mode may also prevent use of a feature your TV supports. Treat EDID controls as a troubleshooting option, not a way to make unsupported hardware capable.
Soundbars, ARC, and eARC
ARC and eARC send audio from the TV back to a soundbar or AV receiver over the TV’s designated HDMI port. That port is not merely another ordinary input, and it may be one of the TV’s best-featured inputs. ARC and eARC are not interchangeable: eARC is designed for higher-bitrate audio and requires compatible equipment. Roku describes ARC as a way for a TV to send audio to an external system and eARC as its enhanced version (ARC/eARC overview).

AV receiver as the hub

└────────────── SpeakersThis can simplify a surround-sound setup, but the receiver must support the video features you want. An older receiver may bottleneck 4K, HDR, HDCP, VRR, or 4K/120 even if the TV supports them. “4K pass-through” means the receiver can transmit a compatible 4K signal onward; it does not establish that it supports every newer gaming feature (Sony’s 4K pass-through explanation).

Use an eARC extractor or specialized switch only when a conventional connection cannot meet your needs. Verify whether it supports ARC or eARC, the audio formats you need (for example, Dolby TrueHD/Atmos or DTS-HD/DTS:X), and the video features you need, including Dolby Vision, 4K/120, VRR, ALLM, CEC, and HDCP 2.3. “Audio extractor” alone does not establish support for those features.
Before you buy
- List every source and how many inputs you need, including a spare if possible.
- Record the modes you actually want: 1080p/60, 4K/60, 4K/120, or another supported mode.
- Note HDR or Dolby Vision, VRR, and ALLM requirements.
- Check whether audio uses ARC/eARC and which TV port provides it.
- Consult the TV manual for ports that support the desired resolution and whether an enhanced, deep-color, or high-bandwidth setting must be enabled.
- Check HDCP requirements for protected 4K sources.
- Confirm the switch’s exact bandwidth, audio pass-through, CEC, control method, power needs, and EDID options. Prefer clear specifications and a documented support path.
Install and configure the switch
- Turn off the TV and source devices.
- Connect each device to a switch port marked INPUT.
- Connect the switch port marked OUTPUT to the chosen TV HDMI input.
- Connect the switch’s power adapter if supplied.
- If using TV audio return, connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the matching port on the soundbar or receiver.
- Turn on the TV, switch, and source. Select the TV input connected to the switch.
- Select the desired switch input with its button, remote, or automatic mode.
- Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode if the manual requires it. Enable CEC and ARC/eARC on both ends if needed.
- Test each source individually before adding other devices or diagnosing multiple problems at once.
Menu labels differ by model, region, and software. Examples in Roku guidance include LG HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color, Samsung HDMI UHD Color, and Sony HDMI signal format → Enhanced mode. CEC labels also vary, including Anynet+ and BRAVIA Sync. Use the TV’s manual or manufacturer support page for the exact path (4K setup examples; HDMI/CEC guidance).

No picture or “No signal”
- Verify that the TV is on the correct input and that the switch output goes to the TV.
- Select the source on the switch manually.
- Power-cycle the setup: turn the TV off, briefly unplug the TV and switch, reconnect switch power, then turn on the TV and source.
- Disconnect other sources and test only the failing device.
- Try another HDMI cable and, if available, another TV HDMI port.
- Set the source temporarily to 1080p/60 and disable HDR or 120 Hz to isolate a capability issue.
- Check HDCP compatibility and try an EDID compatibility mode if the switch provides one.
If a source works when connected directly to the TV but not through the switch, the switch, its cable, or its configuration is implicated.

4K works, but HDR or Dolby Vision does not
Check whether the switch explicitly supports the relevant HDR format, whether the TV input is in enhanced mode, and whether the cable and EDID negotiation are suitable. A source and TV can both support HDR while an intermediate switch does not. Test the source directly into the TV; if HDR returns, investigate the switch path.

4K/120 or VRR is unavailable
Confirm that the switch explicitly supports 4K/120 and VRR, the TV port supports those modes, and the console or PC is configured for 120 Hz. Check cable suitability and whether the switch passes ALLM and other gaming features. An 18 Gbps 4K/60 switch is not a full 4K/120 solution.
Audio is missing or limited to stereo
Confirm that the soundbar is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and that ARC/eARC is enabled on both devices. Check whether the switch supports the required audio path, whether the TV can pass through the source format, and whether the source or TV is set to PCM/stereo. ARC support does not imply eARC support. Sony recommends model-specific checks for ARC wiring (ARC connection guidance) and describes eARC’s ability to carry higher-quality formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio in compatible systems (eARC capabilities).
Automatic switching or CEC acts unpredictably
Use the switch’s button or remote, disable auto-switching if available, or disable CEC on the device causing unwanted changes. Waking from standby or background activity can trigger a switch. Keep a manual control option available.

Check the battery, ensure the switch is powered, and point the remote at an unobstructed IR receiver. Some switches only pass CEC commands; that does not necessarily mean CEC selects their inputs.
When a switch is not enough
- You want one source on two screens: use a splitter.
- You want independent source routing to multiple screens: consider a matrix, and check its HDCP and EDID behavior.
- You need surround processing and several sources: an AV receiver may be a better hub if its video capabilities match your devices.
- Your TV or receiver lacks a required standard: a switch adds selectable inputs; it does not upgrade the underlying hardware. Consider replacement only if the missing capability or compatibility burden justifies it.
A matrix can provide more routing flexibility than a switch, but it also adds complexity. For example, AV Access describes EDID and HDCP management options on its matrix product page (matrix feature example). Such controls do not guarantee every source/display combination will work.
