You can’t currently add a new Gmail account directly to Outlook.com in a browser. Microsoft says Outlook.com no longer supports adding third-party connected accounts such as Gmail, and existing connected-account syncing is no longer supported. As of August 18, 2026, use Outlook mobile or desktop Outlook to access Gmail in an Outlook app—or forward Gmail messages to Outlook.com if you need to read them in its browser interface.
What “Outlook on the web” means
Outlook.com is Microsoft’s consumer webmail service, commonly used with addresses ending in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com or @msn.com. “Outlook on the web” can also mean the browser interface for a Microsoft 365 or Exchange work or school account. The products do not necessarily have the same features. The limitation below concerns connecting third-party accounts in consumer Outlook.com; it does not mean Gmail cannot be used with Outlook mobile or the installed Outlook desktop app.
Can you add Gmail directly to Outlook.com?
No—not as a new connected account in Outlook.com. Microsoft says the service no longer lets users add new third-party connected accounts such as Gmail, and it no longer supports syncing existing connected accounts. If you can’t find an Add account or Connected accounts option, that is not necessarily a problem with your browser or settings. Older screenshots and instructions may show a feature that has since been retired. See Microsoft’s Outlook.com connected-account notice.

Outlook for iOS and Android can add Gmail separately from Outlook.com’s browser interface. Menu labels can vary slightly by app version, but the usual setup is:

- Install and open Outlook for iOS or Outlook for Android.
- Open Settings, then choose Accounts → Add Account → Email Account.
- Enter your Gmail address and continue to Google sign-in.
- Complete Google’s authentication and consent screens. Approve two-step verification if prompted, then confirm the account appears in Outlook’s account list.
You can switch between accounts in the app, and supported features may include a combined inbox, search, calendar and contact access. This is an Outlook mobile setup; it does not add Gmail to Outlook.com in a browser. Microsoft lists mobile Outlook as an alternative in its support guidance.
Add Gmail to Outlook for Windows or Mac
Microsoft’s Gmail setup instructions cover Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024 and Outlook 2021. In a supported installed version:

- Open Outlook and select File → Add Account.
- Enter your Gmail address and select Connect. If asked, enter the address again.
- Sign in through the Google sign-in window, review the requested permissions and select Allow.
- Select Done. Restart Outlook if needed, then look for Gmail and its folders in the folder pane.
Complete sign-in in Google’s authentication window rather than entering your Google password into an unrelated prompt. This adds Gmail to the installed Outlook application; it does not restore connected accounts in Outlook.com. See Microsoft’s desktop Gmail setup steps.
Forward Gmail messages to Outlook.com
If you must use Outlook.com in a browser, forwarding can deliver new Gmail messages to your Outlook.com address. In Gmail, open forwarding settings, add your Outlook.com address as the destination, and complete Google’s verification if requested. Then choose whether to forward all new mail or use Gmail filters to forward selected messages. Decide whether Gmail should keep, archive or delete its own copy.

Forwarding is not account synchronization. It does not mirror your Gmail labels, read state, sent mail or full mailbox in Outlook.com. It also does not automatically let you send as your Gmail address from Outlook.com. If you reply from Outlook.com, check which address recipients will see; sending identity and reply behavior depend on the setup. Keep Gmail as the authoritative mailbox unless you intend to migrate it. Microsoft names forwarding as an option for viewing third-party mail in Outlook.com in its current guidance.
Why old “Connected accounts” instructions don’t work
Some older guides direct readers to Settings → View all Outlook settings → Mail → Sync email, then Connected accounts or Add a connected account. Those paths may no longer be available to consumer Outlook.com users. Microsoft also has a Gmail connection troubleshooting page that describes IMAP settings and a “Manage Connected Accounts” path. That material may be legacy, transitional or relevant to a different product context; it does not override Microsoft’s dedicated notice that Outlook.com no longer supports adding new connected accounts.

The same troubleshooting material lists imap.gmail.com on SSL port 993, and smtp.gmail.com on SSL port 465 or TLS/STARTTLS port 587, with authentication required. Those values are not a workaround for a removed Outlook.com feature. Use current Google requirements if a supported desktop mail client asks for manual configuration.

Troubleshooting Gmail in Outlook apps
- The Add account option is missing in Outlook.com: This is consistent with the removal of new connected accounts. Use mobile or desktop Outlook, or set up forwarding; repeatedly clearing browser data or changing IMAP settings will not restore the feature.
- Google sign-in fails in desktop Outlook: Check the address, complete Google’s sign-in and permission flow, and approve two-step verification if requested. Don’t assume a normal Gmail password belongs in a generic third-party password prompt. If this is a Google Workspace account, an administrator’s policies may affect third-party mail access; ask the administrator if sign-in remains blocked.
- Gmail folders are missing in a supported IMAP connection: Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says the relevant Gmail labels—including Inbox, Sent Mail, Trash and All Mail—need to be set to Show in IMAP. That guidance applies to a supported connection, not to restoring Outlook.com connected accounts.
- Mail is delayed: Delivery and refresh are not necessarily instant. Microsoft’s legacy troubleshooting instructions say a sync refresh may take up to 15 minutes after settings changes; forwarding can also take time to arrive.
- You need to send from your Gmail address: Treat that separately from receiving or forwarding mail. Forwarding alone does not create a native Gmail sending identity in Outlook.com. Use Gmail itself or a supported Outlook app and verify the From address before sending.

If Gmail’s labels, filters, search and Google integrations matter most, Gmail itself is the most complete option. Outlook apps are useful when you want to bring Gmail together with Microsoft accounts or workflows, but their behavior is not identical to Gmail or to Outlook.com.
