To add gift cards in WooCommerce, install a gift-card extension, create a Simple product for one fixed amount or a Variable product for several denominations, and enable its Gift Card option. WooCommerce’s official Gift Cards extension creates digital cards delivered by email; it does not support physical cards or printed vouchers.
Choose the right gift-card setup
Start with the kind of card your store needs. The official WooCommerce extension is designed for prepaid digital gift cards: each purchase generates a unique code that is emailed to the recipient. Customers can also buy a card for themselves.

- One fixed value: Use a Simple product.
- A selection of set values: Use a Variable product and create a variation for each denomination.
- A customer-entered amount: WooCommerce’s guide recommends the Name Your Price extension, which is listed as an officially supported integration.
- Physical cards or printable PDFs: Choose an extension that explicitly supports those formats; the official WooCommerce extension is digital-only.
Requirements before installation
The official extension’s stated requirements are PHP 7.4 or later, WordPress 6.2 or later, WooCommerce 8.2 or later, and hosting that supports Action Scheduler background processing. The extension relies on that processing to handle tasks such as generating and emailing gift-card codes.
Install and create a gift-card product
- Install and activate the official WooCommerce Gift Cards extension from your WooCommerce account or subscription area.
- In WordPress admin, go to Products > Add New.
- Choose Simple for one fixed denomination, or Variable for multiple preset denominations.
- Enable the product’s Gift Card option.
- For a Simple product, enter the amount in the General tab. For a Variable product, create a price attribute and the required variations, then set their prices.
- Add a product title, description, and image, then save the product as a draft or publish it.
- To configure recipient delivery and self-use behavior, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Gift Cards.
Configure delivery and redemption
The extension can send the gift-card email to a specified recipient. Depending on the settings, the customer can include a sender name and message, and schedule a future delivery date. Review the Gift Cards settings and test the purchase flow so you know what the recipient will receive.

Recipients can redeem the unique code by entering it at checkout. A logged-in customer can also add the code to their account balance and use it for a later purchase. This gives the recipient a choice between using the code during checkout and keeping the value on their account.
When you need physical or printable cards
WooCommerce’s official Gift Cards extension does not create physical cards or printed vouchers. If your store needs a mailed card, printable PDF, card gallery, or more extensive design controls, compare extensions that document those features and confirm compatibility with your WordPress and WooCommerce versions before installing.

Advanced Gift Card
WooCommerce’s Advanced Gift Card documentation describes virtual e-gift cards as well as physical gift cards. Documented options include custom amounts, optional discounts, expiry dates, user-role and product or category restrictions, gift-card galleries, and PDF output settings. Its documented installation path is to download the ZIP from your WooCommerce account, then use WordPress Admin > Plugins > Add New to upload, install, and activate it.

YITH’s documentation lists printable virtual PDF cards and physical cards with automatically generated codes. Treat it as a third-party option: check its current compatibility, support, and licensing terms for your store before choosing it.

Check compatibility and troubleshoot delivery
WooCommerce lists official support for WooCommerce Blocks, Print Invoices and Packing Lists, Conditional Shipping and Payments, Woo Subscriptions, All Products for Woo Subscriptions, and Name Your Price. That list does not mean every extension, theme, or payment gateway will work seamlessly, so verify the combination used by your store.
If codes or emails are delayed, check that Action Scheduler can run on your hosting. WooCommerce notes that disabled WP Cron or failed server loopback requests can prevent background processing and email delivery. For broader troubleshooting, update the extension and theme, temporarily disable other plugins to isolate conflicts, and test with a default theme.
