You can add a free trial to a WordPress subscription with a subscription or membership plugin. In WooCommerce, set a trial period on a subscription product and choose whether to collect a signup fee or payment details at checkout. For protected content tied to subscription status, WooCommerce Memberships integrates with WooCommerce Subscriptions; MemberPress offers a separate membership-based setup with free or discounted trials.
Choose the setup that matches what you sell
Use WooCommerce Subscriptions when customers are buying a recurring product through your store. Add WooCommerce Memberships if access to protected content should follow the subscription’s billing and trial status. MemberPress is an alternative when you want to create a membership product and control its registration and access rules.
| Setup | Best fit | Trial and access controls |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce Subscriptions | Recurring products sold through WooCommerce checkout | Set a trial duration on the subscription plan; decide whether to charge a signup fee and how checkout collects payment details. |
| WooCommerce Subscriptions with WooCommerce Memberships | Recurring memberships whose protected content should follow subscription status | Memberships can show a Free Trial status during the trial and apply trial-specific content-dripping rules. |
| MemberPress | Membership products with recurring billing and protected content | Set a free or discounted trial and optionally enable “Allow Only One Trial.” |
These documented options are not interchangeable in every detail. Choose based on whether the transaction is primarily a store product or a membership registration, and confirm current gateway and plan requirements before committing to a payment setup.

Decide whether checkout requires payment details. If you allow a $0 checkout without collecting a payment method, the subscription may move to On Hold when the trial ends, while it awaits its first renewal payment. Make the next step clear to customers and test the chosen checkout behavior before launch.
In WooCommerce Subscriptions, the trial is part of the subscription timeline. For example, a one-month trial on a six-month subscription extends the overall subscription by one month; it does not remove a month from the stated subscription length. See WooCommerce’s subscription product documentation for the product setup details.
Connect a WooCommerce trial to membership access
WooCommerce Memberships can work with WooCommerce Subscriptions so a recurring membership’s access reflects its subscription state. During the trial, the membership has a Free Trial status. Membership rules can control which content is available during that period through trial-specific content dripping. When the trial ends, the membership becomes active and the applicable access rules take effect.

MemberPress warns that trial durations longer than 14 days that are not divisible by 7, 30, or 365 may cause payment-processing issues with a gateway. Confirm the behavior with the gateway you intend to use before publishing a trial with one of those lengths. The warning is specific to MemberPress documentation, not a general rule for every WordPress subscription plugin. See MemberPress’s membership creation guide and getting-started guide.
