To add a floating social share box in WordPress, install a sharing plugin that supports floating placement, choose the services and position, then preview it on desktop and mobile. AddToAny describes responsive vertical and horizontal floating bars; All Social Share lists left, right, and below-content positions. If Jetpack is already installed, its Sharing Buttons feature offers a block-based setup for block themes and a separate settings workflow for classic themes.
Choose a floating position and a setup route
“Floating” refers to where the buttons appear as visitors view or scroll through a page; it is not one built-in WordPress setting. Decide whether you want a bar beside the article, at the screen edge, or below the content. The available positions depend on the tool:

Add a floating share box with a plugin
- Open the plugin installer. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New (the exact label may vary by WordPress version), search for the plugin you selected, and install and activate it. If your host or site administrator restricts plugin installation, ask them to enable it.
- Open the plugin’s settings. Find its settings link in the dashboard and look for sharing-button placement or floating-bar options. The controls differ by plugin; the listings cited here do not establish one universal settings path.
- Choose the placement and orientation. Select the available position that matches your layout—for example, a vertical side bar or a horizontal floating bar. If the plugin offers below-content placement, decide whether that suits your pages better than controls that follow the reader.
- Select relevant social services. Include only the services your audience is likely to use. Network availability can change, so confirm the options shown in the current plugin settings rather than relying on an old list.
- Set where the buttons appear and how they look. If available, choose applicable content types, such as posts or pages, and configure the button style. Do not assume every plugin provides the same display rules.
- Preview representative pages. Check a post and any other content type where the buttons will appear at both wide and narrow viewport widths. Make sure the bar does not cover text or obstruct other controls, then adjust its placement or display rules before publishing.
Avoid activating multiple share-button plugins that provide overlapping controls unless you have a specific reason; duplicate tools can create repeated buttons or competing placement behavior.

Use Jetpack on a block theme
Jetpack’s visitor-facing Sharing Buttons feature lets readers share the page they are viewing. Jetpack recommends using its block for block-based themes. To show the buttons across posts or pages, add the block to the relevant template in the Site Editor.
- Open Appearance → Editor to enter the Site Editor, then open the template used for the content where you want buttons to appear, such as the Single template. Theme and WordPress versions can affect the exact labels and available templates.
- Open the block inserter, search for Sharing Buttons, and add the block where it belongs in the template.
- Choose the sharing services and adjust the block’s orientation, justification, and button presentation using the controls available in the editor.
- Preview the template on representative content and at narrow and wide widths. If the buttons should appear only on certain content, use the appropriate template rather than placing the block in a template used more broadly.

Use Jetpack with a classic theme
Classic themes use Jetpack’s legacy sharing controls rather than the block-theme template workflow. Jetpack’s documented route is:

- In the dashboard, open Jetpack → Settings → Sharing.
- Choose the services you want and set their order.
- Choose the available button style and display locations.
- Save your changes, then preview the relevant posts and pages.
If the Sharing section or options do not appear, check that Jetpack is active and consult its current setup documentation. The classic-theme instructions are distinct from adding the Sharing Buttons block in a Site Editor template.
Keep visitor sharing separate from automatic publishing
Jetpack Sharing Buttons are for visitors who want to share a page. Jetpack Social is a different feature: it can automatically share a site’s posts to connected social accounts. Automatic publishing does not add a floating visitor-facing share box.

Before enabling a sharing tool, review its current privacy information and settings. Jetpack’s Sharing Buttons documentation includes privacy details and describes activity data; that is not a basis for assuming that every plugin handles data the same way. Also check the finished layout in the actual theme: floating controls that fit one site can obscure content or interface elements on another.
