The first keeps an image in archive cards; the second changes what appears in that slot. Plugins offer different workflows for each result.
Choose the result you want
- Static thumbnail: Use a video’s thumbnail as the post’s featured image. The post and archive cards still display an image.
- Video in the featured-image position: Replace the usual featured-image display with an embedded or uploaded video player. Whether it appears as intended depends on how your theme or page builder renders featured media.
Option 1: Automatically set a static thumbnail
The WordPress.org listing for Automatic Featured Images from Videos says it can find a YouTube or Vimeo video within the first 4,000 characters of a post, upload its thumbnail, and set it as the featured image if the post does not already have one.
- In your dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Automatic Featured Images from Videos, then install and activate it.
- Place the YouTube or Vimeo video near the beginning of the post, within the first 4,000 characters described in the plugin listing.
- Check that the post does not already have a featured image; the plugin listing says an existing image is not overwritten.
- Save or update the post, then check its featured image and how the post appears in your theme’s archive or card view.
Option 2: Display a video in the featured-image position
Post Featured Video describes replacing a post’s featured-image display with a YouTube or Vimeo video, or an uploaded MP4. Its listing says to enable the feature for the relevant post type and set a valid video URL or upload in the featured-image area. In Gutenberg, it identifies a Featured Video area. The listing also says the post should have a featured image.
- Go to Plugins > Add New, search for Post Featured Video, then install and activate it.
- Enable the plugin’s feature for the post type you use, following its settings and the current plugin listing.
- Edit the post. Set a featured image, then enter a valid YouTube or Vimeo URL, or upload an MP4, in the featured-video controls.
- Update the post and preview both the post page and any archive or card where the featured media should appear.
Other plugin approaches
Vídeo Destacado: YouTube ID and explicit output
Vídeo Destacado uses a YouTube video ID entered in a meta box and provides a thumbnail preview. Its listing says to activate modules under Settings > Vídeo Destacado. To display the video, it documents the [video-destacado] shortcode and the video_destacado() theme template function. The shortcode can be placed in content; using the template function may require a theme-template change to put the video in the desired location.

VideographyWP: broader import and embedding features
Featured Video for WordPress – VideographyWP says its free version can import YouTube details and optionally replace the featured image with a video. Its listing identifies Vimeo and Dailymotion imports, along with WooCommerce product-video features, as PRO features. The setup instructions require a YouTube API key. Confirm the current listing’s requirements and feature boundaries before choosing this route.

Check the result on your site
Plugin settings do not guarantee that every theme or page builder will display video in the featured-image slot. After configuring the plugin, preview the post itself and the archive, category page, or card where readers should see the media. If the video appears only in the post content, the theme may not be using the plugin’s featured-video output in its featured-image area; a shortcode or theme-template integration may be needed, depending on the plugin.

Before installing, recheck each WordPress.org listing for current maintenance activity, supported WordPress and PHP versions, and the version tested. Those directory details change and are not a guarantee of compatibility with your particular theme or page builder. For a live site, make the change on a staging copy or take a backup first, especially when the plugin changes how featured images are rendered.
