The simplest way to add FAQ schema in WordPress is to use an FAQ block from an SEO or schema plugin, then validate the published page. For a no-code workflow, Yoast SEO’s free plugin includes an FAQ structured-data block. If you need complete control, add valid JSON-LD manually—but only for questions and answers that are visibly displayed on the same page.

What FAQ schema does

FAQ schema is structured data that identifies each question and its answer for search engines and other parsers. It helps software understand content that people can already read on the page; it is not a replacement for writing useful answers.

Google supports JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa. Its general guidance recommends using the format that is easiest for you to maintain, which is usually JSON-LD when your WordPress setup allows it. Markup must accurately describe the page and must not identify hidden or misleading content.

Option 1: Add FAQ schema with Yoast’s block

Yoast documents a block-editor workflow that creates FAQPage markup automatically. The FAQ block is included in the free Yoast SEO plugin; Yoast Premium is not required for this feature.

  1. Install and activate the Yoast SEO plugin.
  2. Open an existing page or post, or create a new one, in the WordPress block editor.
  3. Select the + block inserter and search for FAQ or structured data.
  4. Choose the Yoast FAQ structured data block.
  5. Enter each question and its complete answer. Keep the text relevant to that page and visible to visitors.
  6. Preview the rendered page. Fix spacing, headings, accordions or other display problems before publishing.
  7. Publish or update the page, then validate the live URL.

The block handles the schema output while keeping the questions and answers in the page content. Do not add a second FAQ schema generator for the same FAQ set unless you have confirmed that it does not create duplicate entities.

Option 2: Add FAQ schema manually with JSON-LD

Manual JSON-LD gives you more control but also makes you responsible for syntax, accuracy and future edits. The visible FAQ and the JSON-LD must stay synchronized.

1. Create the visible FAQ first

Add ordinary WordPress headings, paragraphs, an accordion, or another accessible component containing the exact questions and answers you want to mark up. The content should be readable without relying on search results.

2. Add a matching JSON-LD script

Place this script through a method your WordPress installation permits, such as an SEO plugin’s schema field, a custom-code plugin, or a carefully managed template. Some editors and security settings strip script tags from post content, so do not assume that pasting it into a normal paragraph block will work.

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "How do I add FAQ schema in WordPress?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "Add visible questions and answers, generate matching FAQPage JSON-LD, publish it with the page, and validate the live URL."
      }
    },
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "Can I add FAQ schema without a plugin?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "Yes. You can add valid JSON-LD manually, provided the marked-up questions and answers are visible on the same page."
      }
    }
  ]
}
</script>

Replace the example questions and answers with your own text. Escape quotation marks correctly, use valid JSON, and include every question in the visible FAQ. Do not mark up questions that appear only in the script or in content hidden from users.

3. Prevent duplicate schema

Check whether your theme, SEO plugin, FAQ block or another schema plugin already outputs an FAQPage entity. Two plugins emitting the same schema type can create conflicts or duplicate output. Keep one authoritative implementation and disable the overlapping feature in the other tool.

Plugin block or manual JSON-LD: which route fits?

Consideration Plugin FAQ block Manual JSON-LD
Coding effort Low; add and fill a block in the editor. Higher; you must write, insert and maintain valid markup.
Markup control Constrained by the plugin’s output and settings. Highest control over the JSON-LD structure.
Maintenance Edit the visible block and let the plugin regenerate markup. Update the visible FAQ and script together every time.
Duplicate-output risk Possible if another tool also generates FAQ schema. Possible if a plugin or theme adds its own entity.
Best fit Editors who want a no-code, integrated workflow. Sites with development support and a need for precise control.

How to validate FAQ schema

  1. Save the page and inspect the rendered version as a visitor. Confirm that every marked-up question and answer is visible and readable.
  2. Run the live or preview URL through Google’s Rich Results Test during development.
  3. Correct JSON syntax errors, missing required properties, mismatched text and duplicate entities.
  4. After deployment, check Google Search Console reports and test again after template, plugin, theme or caching changes.

Validation confirms that parsers can read the markup; it does not guarantee that Google will show a special search treatment. Google advises complete, accurate data rather than incomplete markup added merely to trigger an appearance.

Will FAQ schema create FAQ dropdowns in Google?

No result is guaranteed. Current Yoast feature documentation and the WordPress.org documentation for Schema Blocks state that Google retired FAQ rich-result dropdowns in May 2026 for most sites. That date is reported by those vendor and plugin sources; the FAQ-specific Google documentation page was not available as a current, separate policy reference.

FAQ markup can still make page content clearer to machines and can support other parsers, but there is no reliable FAQ-specific statistic establishing that adding it improves rankings or traffic. Google’s broader structured-data case studies describe results for structured data and rich results generally, not a causal benefit from FAQ markup itself.

Common problems and fixes

The FAQ appears in the editor but not on the page

Preview the page while logged out and check the block’s visibility settings, responsive styles and theme output. Markup should not be added for content visitors cannot see.

The test reports invalid JSON

Check commas, quotation marks, braces and escaped characters. JSON-LD is strict JSON; a typographic quote or trailing comma can invalidate the whole script.

The visible answer and schema answer differ

Copy-edit the two versions so they communicate the same answer. Update both whenever the FAQ changes.

Two FAQPage entities are detected

Inspect the page source and plugin settings to find which tools emit the entities. Disable one FAQ schema output rather than layering multiple generators over the same content.

The markup is valid but no rich result appears

That is expected: valid structured data is an eligibility signal, not a promise of a search display. Keep the FAQ because it helps explain the page to users and parsers, not because a dropdown is assured.

Best-practice checklist

  • Use questions that genuinely help visitors on that page.
  • Show every marked-up question and answer to users.
  • Keep schema text accurate, complete and synchronized with the visible FAQ.
  • Choose one primary FAQ schema generator per page.
  • Prefer a maintainable JSON-LD implementation when adding markup manually.
  • Test before publishing and retest after plugin, theme, template or caching changes.
  • Judge success by clearer content and correct parsing, not by a promised Google dropdown.
