The most reliable way to stress-test a WordPress theme is to work in a local or browser-based development site, import the official Theme Test Data XML, and then exercise every template with deliberately difficult content. For repeatable or automated fixtures, WordPress Playground can run WP-CLI or PHP scripts instead.

Choose a safe testing environment first

Do not import test posts, media, or comments into a production site. Use a local installation, staging site, or WordPress Playground. A separate environment lets you change settings, delete data, and repeat imports without affecting visitors or real content.

Method 1: Import the official Theme Test Data

The Theme Test Data project provides the broadest baseline for visual theme checks. Its XML contains posts, pages, comments, media, and deliberately awkward cases such as long titles, different image dimensions, nested comments, and mixed HTML.

Download the XML

  1. Download the current Theme Test Data XML from the official WordPress/theme-test-data project.
  2. Keep the file available on the computer or browser session running your development WordPress site.

Import it from the dashboard

  1. Sign in to the development site.
  2. Open Tools > Import.
  3. Choose WordPress. If the WordPress Importer is not installed, install and activate it when prompted.
  4. Upload the XML file and start the import.
  5. Enable Download and import file attachments so images and other referenced media are retrieved.
  6. If the importer does not bring in every item or attachment, run the import again. The project instructions note that repetition may be necessary until the importer reports All Done.

Why this dataset is useful

  • It supplies enough variety to expose typography, spacing, overflow, and template problems quickly.
  • It includes media and comments, not just ordinary short posts.
  • It exercises content that commonly breaks layouts: very long headings, captions, alignment classes, lists, tables, and HTML elements.

Set WordPress up to reveal theme bugs

After importing, change the site and discussion settings so the theme has to render more than a default installation normally shows.

  • Use a long site title and tagline.
  • Display five posts per blog page.
  • Enable threaded comments to at least three levels deep.
  • Paginate comments at five per page.
  • Use a non-default permalink structure.
  • Create both short and long navigation menus.

These settings make wrapping, pagination, menu overflow, comment indentation, and URL-dependent template logic visible during review.

Test every WordPress view, not only the homepage

Work through the imported content and confirm that the intended template, styles, and navigation appear in each context:

  • Index and home page
  • Category, tag, and author archives
  • Single post and static page
  • Search results
  • 404 page
  • Comment displays and threaded replies
  • Attachment or image views
  • Widget and block areas

Content cases to check

  • Long and short titles, excerpts, and paragraphs
  • Captions and images with varied dimensions
  • Left, right, centered, and wide-aligned media
  • Nested ordered and unordered lists
  • Tables and other block-level HTML
  • Quotes, links, inline formatting, and unusual characters
  • Deeply nested comments and comments with long text

Check multiple screen sizes

Inspect each important view at desktop, tablet, and phone widths. Look for horizontal scrolling, clipped media, unreadable type, broken menus, excessive whitespace, and controls that become difficult to operate. Also test keyboard navigation and visible focus, because a layout that looks correct can still fail accessibility checks.

Method 2: Generate fixtures with WordPress Playground and WP-CLI

Use Playground when you need a disposable browser-based WordPress instance or a fixture you can recreate from a Blueprint. Its wp-cli step can run standard WP-CLI commands, including generated posts.

Generate a predictable batch of posts

wp post generate --count=20 --post_type=post

This creates 20 generated posts and is useful for checking archive pagination, grids, excerpts, dates, and post-count assumptions. Put the command in a Blueprint so another developer or a later test run can reproduce the same setup.

Create posts with featured images

A Playground Blueprint can combine writeFile, wp post create, and wp media import ... --featured_image. This approach is appropriate when the theme’s card, hero, or single-post design depends on featured media rather than text alone.

Use PHP for small deterministic fixtures

For a handful of precisely controlled records, use Playground’s runPHP step with wp_insert_post. Code can set exact titles, statuses, dates, post types, and content, and can handle errors explicitly. This requires more implementation work than importing XML and becomes cumbersome for a large catalogue.

Choose the right fixture format

Use a WXR export or ZIP snapshot when you need a large dataset or a complete prepared site. Use PHP when exact, small fixtures matter; use WP-CLI when you need repeatable counts and media workflows.

Method 3: Publish a theme’s starter content

Playground can publish content intentionally supplied by a theme. Use importThemeStarterContent, or install the theme with importStarterContent: true. This is valuable for demonstrating the theme’s intended navigation and page structure, but it is not a substitute for the broader Theme Test Data set: it only helps when the theme actually defines starter content.

Which method should you use?

Method Best for Strength Limitation
Theme Test Data XML + Importer Broad manual coverage Posts, pages, media, comments, and edge cases in one import Import can be large; attachment retrieval may require repeating it
Playground WP-CLI Repeatable generated content Scriptable counts, dates, post types, and media workflows Requires a Blueprint or other Playground setup
Playground runPHP Small deterministic fixtures Precise content and programmable error handling More implementation work for large datasets
Theme starter content Showing a theme’s intended setup Publishes the theme’s own prepared pages and content Only useful if the theme defines starter content

A practical repeatable workflow

  1. Create or reset a local, staging, or Playground WordPress site.
  2. Import Theme Test Data for the initial broad pass, including attachments.
  3. Apply the long-title, five-post, threaded-comment, pagination, permalink, and menu settings.
  4. Review every listed template and content case at several viewport sizes.
  5. Record defects, fix the theme, and repeat the affected checks.
  6. Add WP-CLI or runPHP fixtures for regressions that need exact, repeatable content.
  7. Run separate browser, responsive, accessibility, and debugging checks before release.

Common problems and fixes

Media is missing after the import

Confirm that Download and import file attachments was selected. Run the importer again until it reports All Done; attachment retrieval can take more than one pass.

The test appears too easy

Apply the recommended site settings and inspect long titles, deep comments, wide images, captions, tables, and nested lists. A few short posts cannot expose the same layout failures.

Generated content does not match a regression test

Replace random generation with a Blueprint command whose count and options are fixed, or create exact records with runPHP and wp_insert_post.

The theme looks correct in one browser width only

Repeat the review at multiple screen sizes and test interaction with a keyboard. Responsive and accessibility defects often appear outside the desktop layout.
