Instagram profile music lets eligible users display a short song excerpt on their profile. Visitors must tap the song to hear it—it does not autoplay. Instagram introduced the feature on August 22, 2024, so it is no longer a new 2026 feature, but the option remains useful for personal profiles, creators, and musicians.
The exact menu name can vary by app version and platform. Look for Music, Add music to your profile, or a music setting inside Banner or Banners.
How to add a song to your Instagram profile
Use the Instagram mobile app on an iPhone or Android phone:

- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Look for Music, Add music to your profile, or Banner/Banners, then open its music setting.
- Tap Pick a song for your profile or the + button.
- Search for a song, artist, or album, or choose one of Instagram’s suggestions.
- Tap a track to preview it.
- Use the waveform or duration slider to select the section you want visitors to hear.
- Tap Done, then save or exit the profile editor if Instagram prompts you to do so.
Instagram provides an excerpt rather than the entire track. Current documentation describes the selectable clip as up to 30 seconds, and you cannot upload an arbitrary audio file through this feature.
What visitors see and hear
The song title and artist appear on your profile, separate from your bio and from music attached to a Story, Reel, feed post, or Note. A visitor has to tap the song title or play control to hear the selected excerpt. Opening your profile will not automatically start playback.

Because playback and catalog access depend on Instagram’s current interface and licensing agreements, visitors may also see options to use the track elsewhere in Instagram, such as viewing Reels that use the same song. Those options are not guaranteed for every account or region.
How to change your profile song
- Open your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Open Music directly, or go to Banner/Banners and then the music setting.
- Tap the pencil or edit control beside the current song.
- Choose another track.
- Select the desired excerpt and tap Done.
How to remove the song
- Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Open the music setting under Music or Banner/Banners.
- Tap the X or remove control beside the current track.
- Return to your profile and check that the song is no longer displayed.
On some app versions, tapping the song directly on your profile may also open controls for editing or removing it.

Why you cannot see the music option
A missing music control and a missing song are different problems. Work through these checks:
- Update Instagram. Install the latest version from the official App Store listing or Google Play listing.
- Close and reopen the app. A profile-editor change may not appear until Instagram is restarted.
- Check both menu locations. Look under Edit profile for a direct music option and inside Banner/Banners.
- Test another song. If the control exists but one track is missing, the problem is probably catalog or rights availability rather than the profile feature itself.
- Consider your account type. Meta says certain business accounts may have restricted access to Instagram’s licensed music library. Do not assume that every professional or creator account is blocked.
- Consider your region. Meta says licensed music may be unavailable in some countries or regions.
- Allow for account-level rollout or testing. Instagram can enable features gradually, so updating the app is a sensible first step but is not guaranteed to make the option appear.
Reinstalling Instagram, switching account types, or using a VPN is not a guaranteed fix. Switching from a business account can also affect analytics and professional tools, so it should not be done solely on the assumption that it will unlock music.

Why a particular song is unavailable
If you can add profile music but cannot find the song you want, try the official title, artist name, or an alternate recording. Instagram limits choices to the music available in its own library, and rights can differ by location, account, and recording.
A song appearing in Instagram’s search results does not give you a blanket license to download, re-upload, advertise with, or otherwise use it commercially. Do not upload copyrighted audio as a workaround.

Business accounts and copyright
Meta says Instagram’s licensed music library is generally intended for personal, non-commercial use. Certain business accounts may have limited access because commercial use requires different rights. The presence of a track in the library does not mean it is cleared for every branded post, advertisement, sponsorship, or other commercial use.
For eligible commercial uses, Meta identifies Sound Collection as a source of royalty-free music and sounds. Check the applicable permissions before using music in advertising or branded content.

Profile music versus music on other Instagram features

These surfaces use related music tools, but their controls and availability are not identical. Profile music is not a Spotify playlist, external audio widget, or full-song player.
Choosing a good profile song
- Pick an excerpt that makes sense without the rest of the song.
- Choose lyrics appropriate for anyone who can view your profile.
- Consider whether the track reflects your current identity or profile theme.
- Musicians can use the feature to spotlight a release, but should remember that availability may change if licensing changes.
- Commercial profiles should confirm that the selected music is permitted for their intended use.
Instagram’s menu labels and music catalog can change over time. If the feature disappears after you have added a song, possible explanations include a licensing change, regional catalog change, account-access change, account-type change, an interface redesign, or a temporary bug.
