You can add more buttons and adjust their layout and appearance from the editor controls.
Insert the Buttons block
Open the post or page in the WordPress block editor. From the Posts or Pages area, choose Add New to start a draft, or open an existing item to edit it. The block editor has been WordPress’s default editor since WordPress 5.0.
- Click the + Block Inserter and search for Buttons, then select it; or add a paragraph and type
/buttons, then press Enter. - WordPress inserts a Buttons block containing one individual Button block. The parent Buttons block is the container; the Button block inside it is the item you configure.
WordPress’s documentation describes the purpose directly: “Use the Buttons block to add one or more buttons to your page or post.” WordPress.org Documentation: Buttons block.
Set the button label and destination
Select the individual Button block, not just its parent container. Enter the text visitors should see, then use the link control in the toolbar to enter or choose the destination URL. The toolbar also offers an option to open that link in a new tab.

- Use a concise label that makes the next action clear, such as “Read the guide” or “Contact us.”
- Check the destination carefully, particularly if the button should lead to another page or an external site.

Style and arrange buttons
Change an individual button’s appearance
With the individual Button block selected, use its toolbar and settings sidebar to adjust available options such as color, typography, padding, dimensions, border, and shadow. The exact choices and style variations can depend on the active theme.

Add another button or change the group layout
To add a second button, use the Add block control inside the Buttons container. New buttons follow the existing button’s style. Select the parent Buttons block to work with group-level layout options such as justification. Group layout and alignment are separate from an individual button’s appearance; wide and full-width alignment require theme support.
WordPress’s documentation was updated September 1, 2026, and notes settings changes in WordPress 7.1 as well as interactive-state guidance added in August 2026. Editors on older versions may see controls arranged differently. Consult the current documentation if a setting is not where you expect it.

Preview before publishing
- Preview the post or page in the editor.
- Check how the button and any group of buttons appear at a narrow screen width.
- Follow the button link and confirm it reaches the intended destination.
Do you need a plugin?
For a standard linked call-to-action, the built-in Buttons block is the direct no-shortcode option. Consider a third-party block plugin only if it provides a specific feature or design control you need that the built-in block and your theme do not provide. Before installing one, check its current maintenance and support information, compatibility with your WordPress and theme setup, and privacy details.
For example, the WordPress.org directory lists Button Block – Stylish buttons that get more clicks as a free Gutenberg block plugin. It is optional, not a requirement for adding a basic button. Its listing describes bundled libraries and third-party service disclosures, so review the current plugin listing and privacy details before choosing it.

Use the current block, not an old standalone Button guide
Some older instructions refer to a standalone Button block. WordPress marks that block deprecated since WordPress 5.4 and directs users to the Buttons block instead. For current work, insert Buttons, then edit its individual Button child. The developer reference identifies the parent as core/buttons and the permitted inner block as core/button; ordinary editors do not need to write block markup manually.
