The right Bluetooth adapter depends on the direction of the connection. To send sound from a non-Bluetooth TV, stereo, projector, or console to wireless headphones, you need a Bluetooth transmitter. To send music from a phone to an old stereo, car radio, or powered speaker, you need a Bluetooth receiver. A desktop PC usually needs a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter or internal Bluetooth card.
There is no universal Bluetooth dongle that works with every TV, console, stereo, and computer. First identify the source device, its available ports, and whether you want to transmit or receive audio.
Choose the adapter by what you want to connect

Transmitter vs. receiver: the essential difference
A transmitter sends audio from a device that does not have Bluetooth. A receiver accepts Bluetooth audio and sends it through a cable to older equipment.

How to add Bluetooth to a non-Bluetooth TV
What you need
- A Bluetooth transmitter with an input matching the TV.
- A USB port or power adapter for the transmitter.
- Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, or a speaker.
- One suitable audio connection: optical/TOSLINK, 3.5-mm analog, or RCA.
Typical setup
- Check the TV for an optical audio output, headphone/AUX output, or RCA audio output.
- Buy a transmitter with the matching input. Do not assume an HDMI transmitter will work with HDMI ARC or eARC.
- Connect the transmitter to the TV’s audio output.
- Connect its power cable to a USB port or supplied power adapter.
- Set it to TX or transmit mode.
- Put the headphones or speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Put the transmitter into pairing mode and wait for the connection.
- Select the relevant TV audio output and test playback.
With optical audio, set the TV’s digital audio format to PCM or stereo if the transmitter does not support Dolby Digital or DTS. An incompatible bitstream format is a common reason for silence.
TV problems to anticipate
- No sound through optical: Change Dolby, DTS, or bitstream output to PCM/stereo.
- The TV speakers turn off: Some TVs disable internal speakers when the headphone jack is used. Optical output may provide more flexible simultaneous playback.
- Volume does not change: Optical output may be fixed-level. Use the headphones’ controls, a transmitter with volume controls, or a suitable TV setting.
- Two headphones will not connect: The transmitter must explicitly support dual-link transmission.
- The TV only has HDMI: Use a compatible HDMI audio extractor or another supported output. HDMI, ARC, and eARC are not interchangeable with optical or AUX.
- Audio and video are out of sync: Check codec compatibility and use the TV’s audio-delay adjustment if available.
For example, Avantree’s Oasis Plus 2 is a TV-focused transmitter with optical and AUX inputs, dual-headphone transmission, and optical pass-through. Its product page says it does not accept HDMI-only or HDMI ARC/eARC connections directly and that optical input requires PCM rather than Dolby or DTS. Features vary by model, so verify the exact product before purchase.
How to add Bluetooth to an old stereo or amplifier
Phone to old stereo: use receiver mode
- Confirm that the stereo has an AUX, line-in, RCA, or similar analog input.
- Buy a Bluetooth receiver, or set a two-in-one adapter to RX mode.
- Connect the receiver’s 3.5-mm or RCA output to the stereo’s input.
- Power the receiver.
- Select that input on the stereo.
- Pair the phone with the receiver and start playback.
- Adjust volume on the stereo and phone as appropriate.
A receiver sends a signal to an amplifier; it does not power passive speakers. Passive speakers still require an amplifier or receiver.

- Connect a transmitter to the stereo’s line-out, headphone-out, optical-out, or other supported audio output.
- Set it to TX mode and supply power.
- Put the headphones into pairing mode.
- Pair the headphones with the transmitter.
Do not connect a normal Bluetooth transmitter to a speaker-level output unless the product specifically supports it. Line-level, headphone-level, optical, or dedicated audio outputs are the usual choices.
For an example of the two directions, the Avantree Oasis manual describes receiver-mode connections from a phone to an amplifier or car stereo and transmitter-mode connections to Bluetooth headphones.
How to add Bluetooth to a desktop PC
Microsoft says a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth to a Windows computer without built-in Bluetooth. This is different from an audio transmitter for a TV: a PC dongle adds Bluetooth data and device support to the operating system.
Check whether Bluetooth is already installed
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
If Bluetooth is missing, disabled, or unavailable, connect a compatible USB adapter. Follow the manufacturer’s driver instructions and restart if requested.

Pair a device in Windows
- Plug in the USB Bluetooth adapter.
- Turn on Bluetooth in Windows.
- Put the headphones, mouse, keyboard, controller, or other accessory into pairing mode.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Select the accessory and complete pairing.
Microsoft’s current instructions are available in its Bluetooth pairing guide. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so check the adapter manufacturer’s current driver policy if you still use it.
USB adapter or internal PCIe card?
A USB dongle is inexpensive, portable, and requires no case opening. Its range can be less predictable when it is hidden behind a metal desktop case. A short USB extension cable can improve placement.
An internal PCIe or Wi-Fi card can offer better antenna placement and may add Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth. It requires opening the PC and may need a cable to an internal USB header, so it is better suited to a permanent desktop installation.
Check the intended Bluetooth profile before buying. Audio, keyboards, mice, controllers, printers, and specialist accessories do not all use Bluetooth in the same way. A USB adapter that supports headphones is not automatically suitable for every controller or peripheral.
Some USB 3.x ports and nearby wireless equipment can contribute to 2.4-GHz interference. If connections are unstable, try a USB 2.0 port or extension cable; this is a practical troubleshooting step, not a guarantee.
How to add Bluetooth to a car
If the car has AUX
- Plug a Bluetooth receiver into the AUX input.
- Power it through USB or a 12-volt adapter.
- Select AUX on the factory stereo.
- Pair the phone with the receiver.
- Play audio from the phone and control volume through the car stereo.
AUX generally provides better convenience and fewer interference problems than FM transmission.
If the car has no AUX
- FM Bluetooth transmitter: Works with an unused FM frequency, but can suffer from local interference.
- Cassette adapter: Useful in very old cars with a cassette deck.
- Vehicle-specific integration kit: Can provide better integration and hands-free calling.
- Replacement head unit: Offers the most capability but costs more and may affect installation, steering-wheel controls, or factory features.
If hands-free calls matter, choose a receiver or car adapter with an appropriate microphone and confirm where the microphone is positioned.

How to add Bluetooth to a game console
Do not assume that an ordinary PC USB Bluetooth dongle will work with a console. Consoles may restrict USB audio devices, drivers, Bluetooth profiles, microphones, and controllers.
- Identify the exact console model and software version.
- Check the console manufacturer’s supported accessories.
- Prefer a transmitter designed for that console.
- Confirm whether it connects through USB-A, USB-C, a controller’s 3.5-mm jack, optical audio, or an HDMI audio extractor.
- Check separately whether it supports game audio, microphone audio, and voice chat.
Stereo headphone audio does not imply two-way chat support. Some adapters can send game sound but cannot return microphone audio.
For example, UGREEN’s USB Bluetooth audio transmitter is listed for PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC, but its product information specifies Windows 11 for PC use. That is a targeted compatibility claim, not evidence that the adapter works with every console or computer.
How to make wired headphones or speakers wireless
Use a Bluetooth receiver with the appropriate output connector:
- Plug the receiver into the headphone or AUX input.
- Power or charge the receiver.
- Pair it with a phone, tablet, or computer.
- Play audio and adjust volume on the source or connected equipment.
This works with equipment that has an analog input. It does not turn passive speakers into powered speakers; an amplifier is still required.
Codec, latency, and Bluetooth version
Bluetooth 5.3 or 5.4 does not automatically mean better sound, longer indoor range, or zero delay. Bluetooth version, audio codec, profile support, and radio conditions are separate considerations.
The transmitter and receiving headphones must share a codec for that codec’s benefits to apply. SBC is widely supported but may produce noticeable video delay. aptX, aptX Low Latency, aptX Adaptive, AAC, and other codecs have different compatibility requirements. Low-latency performance depends on both ends and the application.

Multipoint, dual-link transmission, microphone support, and Auracast are also separate features. Do not buy a product solely because its Bluetooth version is newer.
An older Avantree manual gives illustrative product-specific latency figures of about 40 ms for aptX Low Latency, 70 ms for aptX, and 220 ms for SBC. These are not universal Bluetooth guarantees. Avantree’s current support guidance also explains that low-latency benefits require compatible support from both the transmitter and receiving device.

For gaming, instruments, lip-sync-critical video, or live monitoring, wired headphones may remain the better choice if Bluetooth delay cannot be reduced.

For a TV
- Optical, AUX, or RCA input matching the TV.
- PCM/stereo compatibility for optical.
- Volume controls if the TV output is fixed-level.
- Dual-headphone support if two listeners are required.
- Optical pass-through if a soundbar must remain connected.
- Compatible low-latency codecs at both ends.
- Reliable independent power rather than dependence on an unreliable TV USB port.
For a stereo or amplifier
- RX mode for phone-to-stereo listening.
- 3.5-mm and/or RCA output.
- Automatic reconnection and stable power.
- A physical pairing button.
- Low noise and volume controls if the stereo lacks a remote.
For a PC
- Exact Windows version and driver support.
- Compatibility with the intended profile: audio, controller, keyboard, mouse, or another accessory.
- Good antenna placement or extension-cable support for a desktop.
- Internal Wi-Fi/Bluetooth support if you prefer a permanent PCIe card.
For a car
- AUX support where possible.
- Automatic power-on and charging while in use.
- Hands-free calling and suitable microphone placement.
- FM frequency controls if AUX is unavailable.
- Ground-loop-noise mitigation if charging introduces a hum.
Examples of product categories
A TV-specific unit such as the Avantree Oasis Plus 2 is aimed at optical/AUX television setups and lists Bluetooth 5.3, two-headphone transmission, and optical pass-through. It is not a general HDMI, console, or hearing-aid adapter.
For Windows desktops, the TP-Link UB500 Plus lists Windows 7, 8.1, 10, and 11 support and has an adjustable antenna. The ASUS USB-BT500 is a smaller Bluetooth 5.0 Windows adapter. Verify current drivers, hardware revisions, and regional availability before buying.
Two-in-one TX/RX adapters can be useful when you need both TV-to-headphones and phone-to-stereo connections. They can also be more confusing: check the mode switch, port labels, codec support, battery requirements, microphone limitations, and reconnection behavior.
Troubleshooting Bluetooth adapters
It pairs, but there is no sound
- Confirm the adapter is powered.
- Check that it is in the correct TX or RX mode.
- Select the correct source output or stereo input.
- Set optical TV output to PCM/stereo.
- Check that the source is not muted.
- Make sure the headphones are connected to the transmitter rather than still connected to a nearby phone.
- Disconnect another device that may have captured the connection.
The device does not appear during pairing
- Put both devices into pairing mode, not merely powered-on mode.
- Disconnect the headphones from a phone or laptop.
- Move the devices within a few feet during setup.
- Clear the adapter’s pairing memory.
- Restart both devices.
- Confirm that one device is a transmitter and the other is a receiver.
Microsoft similarly recommends turning the Bluetooth device on, making it discoverable, keeping it nearby, and selecting it from Add device in Windows.

There is audio delay
- Use a transmitter and headphones that share a low-latency codec.
- Use the manufacturer’s recommended codec mode.
- Do not treat Bluetooth 5.x as a guarantee of low delay.
- Try the TV’s audio-delay adjustment.
- Use wired headphones if the delay remains unacceptable.
Sound cuts out or is distorted
- Reduce distance and obstructions.
- Move the adapter away from a metal case, crowded USB hub, or other radio equipment.
- Try a short USB extension cable.
- Test a USB 2.0 port.
- Charge the adapter and headphones.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth devices.
- Check codec, firmware, and operating-system limitations.
Actual range varies with walls, antenna placement, device size, and 2.4-GHz congestion. Manufacturer range figures should not be treated as guaranteed indoor performance. See the vendor information for the TP-Link UB500 Plus and UGREEN Bluetooth adapters for examples of these product-specific qualifications.
The microphone or voice chat does not work
Sending stereo audio and supporting two-way headset communication are different capabilities. A TV transmitter may send sound to headphones but have no microphone return path. On a PC, enabling a headset microphone can also change the available audio profile and quality. Confirm microphone and chat support separately before buying.
One headphone works, but two do not
The transmitter must explicitly support dual-link transmission. Check whether dual-link changes supported codecs, volume controls, microphone features, or audio quality.

Do not assume that a conventional Bluetooth transmitter works with hearing aids or Auracast broadcasts. Those products require explicit support for the relevant hearing-aid protocol or Bluetooth Auracast.
For example, Avantree states that the Oasis Plus 2 does not support Auracast and will not work with hearing aids. If hearing-aid compatibility is the goal, buy a product that names that capability directly.
When Bluetooth is the wrong solution
Bluetooth is convenient, but it is not always the best connection. Choose wired audio when latency is critical, use HDMI audio extraction when the source has no suitable analog or optical output, consider Wi-Fi audio for certain multiroom systems, and consider a replacement car head unit when you need integrated controls, reliable calling, and broader vehicle support.
The safest buying process is simple: identify the source device, inspect its output or input ports, decide whether audio must be transmitted or received, then verify the exact operating system, console, codec, microphone, dual-link, and Auracast requirements.
