WordPress admin list tables are easier to manage when they show the fields your team actually uses. A custom column always has two parts: a heading added to the table’s columns array, and a callback that supplies a value for each row. Use the hook pair that matches the screen—Pages, a post type, or Users—or configure the tables without code through an Admin Columns plugin.
How WordPress custom columns work
The heading and the row value are separate operations. A columns filter receives an associative array whose keys identify columns and whose values are the labels displayed in the table header. You add a unique key, return the array, then attach a callback to the matching custom-column action. The callback checks that key, retrieves the record’s data, and outputs an escaped value.
Do not reuse built-in keys such as title, author, date, categories, or tags. Give your column a site-specific key such as site_review_flag to avoid collisions with WordPress or another plugin.

Check the target WordPress release and the post type’s registration before deploying. A heading can appear correctly while row values remain blank if the output action does not match the screen.

Add a column to the Pages screen with PHP
Place site-specific code in a small plugin or your child theme’s code, rather than editing WordPress core. This pattern adds a “Review flag” column and reads a value from post meta:

- The filter receives the existing headings; preserve them and append your uniquely named key.
- The action receives the column name and current Page ID; branch only when the name matches your key.
- Retrieve only the data needed for that row and escape it for the output context.
esc_html()is appropriate for plain text shown as HTML text; use a context-specific escaping function if you output an attribute, URL, or richer markup.
The WordPress Developer Resources reference describes the columns value as an associative array of column headings. The example above illustrates the documented hook shape; adapt and test it on your own site.

Use a custom post type
Non-hierarchical post types
For a post type registered with a slug such as property, use manage_property_posts_columns and manage_property_posts_custom_column. The general form is:

Hierarchical post types
If the custom post type is hierarchical, use its columns filter for the heading but the Pages custom-column action for output, as documented by WordPress. Confirm the callback arguments for the target screen before relying on a copied snippet.
Add a column to Users
User lists have their own hooks. Add the label with manage_users_columns and return the value from manage_users_custom_column. The callback can receive the column name and user ID, allowing you to read user metadata or format an existing account field.

- Custom fields such as a review status or internal reference.
- Featured images, media details, or word counts.
- Taxonomy terms and SEO descriptions.
- User metadata.
- For a real-estate post type, fields such as bedrooms, bathrooms, size, price, and photos.
Keep cells short enough to scan and avoid expensive queries for every row. If a value needs substantial editing or explanation, link to the edit screen instead of placing the entire workflow in the table.
No-code setup with Admin Columns
Admin Columns provides a configuration workflow for supported list tables. Open the table’s settings icon, or go to Dashboard → Settings → Admin Columns, select the list table, and choose + Add Column. From the settings list you can remove columns, change labels and widths, reorder them, and control visibility.
The WordPress.org listing describes the free core as supporting column management for posts, pages, users, comments, and media, including custom post types. It also lists Pro features such as sorting, filtering, inline editing, bulk editing, conditional formatting, and CSV export; taxonomy-screen support is described as a Pro option. Product packaging and compatibility can change, so check the current listing before installing or purchasing.

This is a maintenance and workflow decision, not a proven performance or security ranking. Test either approach on a staging site and keep a recovery path before changing a production list table.
Troubleshoot blank or incorrect columns
- Heading appears, cells are empty: confirm that the output hook matches the screen and that your callback tests the exact column key.
- Nothing appears in the heading: make sure the filter returns the original columns array after adding your key.
- Custom post type behaves like Pages: check whether it is hierarchical; hierarchical types use
manage_pages_custom_columnfor output. - Another plugin changes the same column: rename your key so it is unique and avoid built-in keys.
- Markup or security warnings: escape the value for its context and do not print untrusted HTML.
- User column does not work: switch to
manage_users_columnsandmanage_users_custom_column; post hooks do not populate the Users screen. - Plugin controls are missing: check whether the desired operation is listed as a Pro feature and confirm current compatibility with your WordPress release.
Pre-deployment checklist
- Identify the exact list table and post-type hierarchy.
- Choose a unique, lowercase column key and a translatable label.
- Preserve the existing columns array.
- Attach the matching output callback and confirm its arguments.
- Escape every value for its rendering context.
- Test empty, long, malformed, and permission-sensitive values on staging.
- Check the table at different screen widths and with other enabled plugins.
The Bottom Line
For a focused customization, add a unique key with the correct columns filter and render it through the matching custom-column hook. Use the Users hooks for user lists and the Pages output action for hierarchical post types. Choose Admin Columns when a team needs no-code configuration or interactive list-table operations.
