In the WordPress block editor, add an Image block where you want the picture to appear, then upload a file, choose an image from the Media Library, or insert an image URL. You can also drag an image into the editor. Afterward, add useful alt text, check the crop and display size, and save or update the page.
How do I add an image to WordPress?
- Open the page or post in the block editor and place the insertion point where the image should go.
- Select the + block inserter and search for Image, or type
/imagein the editor and press Enter. - Choose Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL, depending on where the image is.
- Set the image’s alt text and any caption or display options you need.
- Preview the page, then save it as a draft or publish/update it using the controls in your editor.
The Image block is the usual block-editor method for adding one picture to a page or post. The labels and available controls can vary with the site’s WordPress setup, theme, or installed plugins; the steps here describe the block editor.
How do I upload a photo from my computer?
Choose Upload in the Image block and select an image file from your device. WordPress adds images inserted through a post or page to the Media Library, where the site stores and manages media. You can also drag a file from your computer onto a blank page or into an empty Paragraph block; WordPress can create an image block for it.

Uploading is a good choice when the picture is yours or you otherwise have permission to use it and you want the site to store its own copy. If the image is already on the site, using the Media Library avoids uploading another copy just to place it on this page.

How do I add an image from the Media Library?
Select Media Library in the Image block and choose the image you want. This is the route to use when the file has already been uploaded to the site. The Media Library provides a central place to manage site images, and selecting an existing item reuses it in the page or post.
Some WordPress sites also show a Media tab in the inserter. Depending on theme support, it may offer images from Openverse as well as items in the Media Library. If you do not see Openverse, it may not be available for your site; it is not a universal option.
How do I add an image using a URL?
Choose Insert from URL in the Image block and enter the image address. This can be convenient if you have a usable image URL, but it leaves the page dependent on the remote source. Some sites block embedding, and the image may stop appearing if it is moved, deleted, or no longer shared. Only use an image you have permission to use.

Saving a copy can reduce dependence on the remote file remaining available, but it does not grant permission to reuse someone else’s image.
Which image insertion method should I use?
| Method | Best when | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Upload | The file is on your device and should be added to the site. | Images added through a page or post are stored in the Media Library. |
| Media Library | The image is already on the site. | It reuses an existing media item instead of asking you to upload it again. |
| Insert from URL | You have an image address and want to use that remote file. | The remote site can block embedding or the file can later become unavailable. Permission still matters. |
| Drag and drop or paste | You want to work directly in the editor. | For a copied image, check whether the toolbar offers an option to save it to the Media Library if you need a site-stored copy. |
WordPress also documents copying and pasting an image from another document. After pasting, inspect the block and toolbar to confirm whether the image was saved to the Media Library if you need it to persist independently of its original source.

How do I write alt text or mark an image decorative?
Alt text should communicate the image’s meaningful content or purpose in the context of the page. For example, if a photo illustrates a particular step in a guide, describe the useful information the photo adds rather than listing every visible detail. Avoid using alt text as a place to repeat nearby copy or stuff in search terms.
If the image is purely decorative and adds no meaningful information or functionality, mark it as decorative so assistive technology can ignore it. The WordPress guide distinguishes between alt text entered in the block settings and alt text saved in the Media Library: block-level alt text applies to that image on that particular page or post, while Media Library alt text becomes the default when that image is inserted elsewhere.
How do I add a caption, crop, or resize the image?
Add a caption
Use the image block’s toolbar to turn on the caption, then enter the text below the image. A caption is visible on the page; it is different from alt text, which provides a text alternative for the image.
Crop or adjust the source image
The Crop control opens the Media Editor. WordPress documents controls to crop, rotate, flip, or choose an aspect ratio. The edited version is saved as a new file, so the original remains in the Media Library.
Set display size and fit
The Image block offers alignment, aspect ratio, width and height, scale, and focal point controls. Width and height affect how large the image appears in the layout; they are separate from the source file itself. WordPress advises leaving dimensions on Auto in most cases, adjusting width while allowing height to follow, and avoiding a fixed height unless the design calls for one. A fixed height can be harder to control responsively.

Cover fills the selected area and may crop parts of the image. Contain shows the whole image but may leave empty space in that area. Choose based on whether filling the shape or preserving the entire picture matters more.
Resolution choices may include Full Size, Large, Medium, or Thumbnail, depending on the theme and the original image dimensions. Do not assume every site will show every choice. Check the result in the page preview, especially at narrower screen widths, because a crop or fixed dimension that looks acceptable on one layout may hide important content in another.
How do I set an image as the featured image or add several images?
Set a featured image
To use an image as the post’s featured image, open the Image block’s More options menu and choose Set as featured image. The featured image serves a different role from an image placed within the body of the page or post; check the page preview to see how your theme displays it.
Make a gallery
For a group of pictures, add a Gallery block instead of inserting each picture as a separate Image block. The gallery workflow lets you select or add images through the media uploader. Choose the Image block for one standalone picture and Gallery when the images belong together as a set.

Troubleshooting image problems
- The image will not insert: Confirm you are in the block editor and that you selected the Image block. Try choosing Upload or Media Library from the block controls, or drag the file into a blank area of the editor.
- A URL image does not appear: The source site may block embedding, or the address may no longer point to a shared image. Try a valid image address; if you have permission and need a durable site copy, use the toolbar option to upload it to the Media Library when available.
- The image is cropped unexpectedly: Check the aspect ratio and focal point. If the block uses Cover, it may crop to fill its area; try Contain if showing the whole image is more important than filling the area.
- The image looks stretched or the layout behaves poorly: Review width, height, and scale. Use Auto dimensions in most cases, and avoid forcing a fixed height unless the design requires it.
- You cannot find a resolution or Openverse option: Those choices depend on theme support and, for resolution choices, the source image dimensions. Their absence does not necessarily mean the image block is broken.
- A pasted image may not be stored on the site: Inspect its toolbar for an upload-to-Media-Library option. Use that option when available if you need the image saved as a site media item.
- The image appears but lacks a useful text alternative: Add contextual alt text in the block settings, or mark the image decorative if it adds no meaningful information or function.
WordPress.com plans, self-hosted WordPress installations, plugin-modified editors, and the Classic Editor may not present identical controls. If a label or setting described here is missing, use the controls available in your editor rather than assuming every WordPress site has the same interface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add an image to WordPress without creating a separate image block first?
Yes. WordPress documents dragging an image onto the page or into an empty Paragraph block; the editor can insert it in that workflow.
