To display a PDF on a web page, use the browser’s built-in PDF handling for the simplest option, Mozilla PDF.js when you want to host and adapt a JavaScript viewer, or Adobe PDF Embed API for Adobe’s documented hosted integration. For a dependable custom viewer, PDF.js is a practical starting point: serve its viewer and worker over HTTP(S), keep their versions aligned, and make the PDF available to the viewer under browser same-origin rules or correctly configured CORS.
There is no single choice that suits every site. Decide based on how much control you need, whether you can host the viewer and document, which PDF features matter, and the browsers and accessibility needs you must support.
Choose the right way to show a PDF
“HTML5 PDF viewer” can mean anything from handing a PDF to the browser to embedding a full JavaScript viewer inside a page. These approaches differ in control and setup; HTML itself does not supply a universal PDF reader with identical behavior across browsers.

Compare the choices against your customization needs, hosting and dependency model, target-browser behavior, accessibility requirements, document privacy, and whether people need search, printing, downloads, forms, or annotations. No option is established as best for every website.

Quickest option: embed the browser’s PDF handler
For a public PDF and a deliberately simple page, an HTML iframe, object, or embed element can hand the document to the browser’s built-in viewer. This does not provide a site-controlled viewer UI, and browsers or mobile platforms may handle the document differently. Keep a direct link as a fallback.

</section>Replace the example path with the document’s real URL. The PDF server must return the document successfully, and access controls must permit the intended visitors to retrieve it. If the document should not be public, do not place it at an unrestricted public URL merely to make embedding work.
Use Mozilla PDF.js for a site-controlled viewer
PDF.js separates its core parsing logic, display layer, and viewer UI. For a conventional viewer, begin with the official prebuilt distribution or build on the viewer layer rather than assembling a reader from the core alone. Mozilla asks sites embedding its viewer not to leave it as an unmodified copy; adapt or build upon the UI. Consult the current PDF.js Getting Started documentation and releases for distribution layout and version details, which can change.

1. Serve the viewer and worker together
Install or download the official distribution and serve its viewer and worker assets from your site. Keep the worker version aligned with the PDF.js library version; mismatches can cause loading or parsing failures. Run the site through a development or production HTTP(S) server. PDF.js says its worker is not enabled when the viewer is opened from a file:// URL, so double-clicking a local HTML file is not a valid deployment test.
For a first integration, host the prebuilt viewer at a path such as /pdfjs/web/viewer.html and host the PDF at /documents/guide.pdf. These are example paths, not paths guaranteed by every package. The iframe pattern below assumes you have placed the viewer there:

<p><a href="/documents/guide.pdf">Open or download the guide</a></p>The file query parameter is URL-encoded so the PDF path is treated as a parameter value. Use the viewer and parameter behavior supplied by the version you install; verify the path and load the page from your web server. An iframe is one way to place the viewer in a page, not a requirement to use PDF.js.

2. Make the PDF accessible to the viewer
The least complicated arrangement is usually to serve the viewer and PDF from the same origin—for example, the same scheme, host, and port. If the PDF is on another origin, browser same-origin rules apply. Configure the document host’s CORS response for the site that needs access, or deliver the file through a controlled same-origin backend route. A URL that opens in a new tab is not proof that a cross-origin viewer can fetch it.

Do not expose an unrestricted endpoint that fetches arbitrary user-supplied URLs; that can turn your server into a proxy for unintended destinations.
3. Adapt the page and test real documents
Give the viewer region a deliberate responsive size and keep a meaningful direct link to the PDF. Test representative documents—not just a one-page text file—including files with forms, annotations, large images, or unusual page sizes if your users rely on them. Check keyboard navigation, screen-reader behavior, zoom, text selection, and forms with the actual viewer and documents. An embedding choice does not by itself establish that a document or viewer is accessible.

PDF feature support varies by browser and version. Test the browsers, mobile layouts, hosting configuration, and failure states relevant to your site rather than promising identical behavior everywhere.
Use Adobe PDF Embed API
Adobe documents an SDK-based integration: load its viewer script, create a display container, initialize a view with a client ID and that container, then provide the PDF and filename metadata. Its documentation describes both sized-container and inline display modes. Obtain the currently required client ID and verify current terms and API details with Adobe before deployment.

Adobe lists search, print, download, annotations, and form interaction among its viewing capabilities. Its documentation notes that feature availability depends on the content having downloaded. If the SDK fetches a PDF from another origin, Adobe warns that CORS can be an issue; configure the PDF host and validate the integration in the deployed environment. Its overview page stated it was last updated May 1, 2026, which is a page update date, not an SDK version.

- Choose document access deliberately. Decide whether the PDF is public, authenticated, or available only through a time-limited route. Enforce that decision at the document host or application endpoint.
- Provide a fallback. Put a clearly named direct link near the viewer so visitors have another route to open or download the source document.
- Check accessibility in context. Validate keyboard use, screen-reader behavior, zoom, text selection, and form interaction with your chosen viewer and actual files. Do not assume the embed alone makes a PDF accessible.
- Test responsive layouts. Check narrow screens and the page height on the devices your audience uses; a fixed desktop-sized viewer may be awkward on mobile.
Troubleshoot a blank or broken viewer

When a viewer is blank, start with the PDF response, server logs, CORS headers, document URL, worker availability, and browser console. Changing viewer code before checking those basics can obscure the actual failure.
