What a WordPress file-manager plugin can do
These plugins add a file tree inside wp-admin. Depending on the plugin and your configuration, you can browse folders, upload and download files, edit text, copy and paste, rename, delete, create archives, and preview files without opening a separate FTP client.
Advanced File Manager describes an FTP-like dashboard interface with configurable root paths, role restrictions, path privacy, hidden files and folders, chunked uploads, cloud integrations, and optional frontend use. The File Manager listing describes editing, uploading, downloading, deleting, ZIP creation, copy, and paste. Treat these as capabilities to verify in the current plugin listing and settings rather than as a guarantee that every feature is enabled in your installation.
Choose a plugin and evaluate its risk
Install a plugin from the WordPress.org directory that is actively maintained and compatible with your current WordPress and PHP versions. A file manager is a high-impact component: a compromised administrator session or an overly broad root path can expose or alter the entire site.

Install and activate the file manager
- Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for the exact plugin name, such as Advanced File Manager or File Manager, and confirm that the author, compatibility information, and update history match the plugin you intend to use.
- Select Install Now, then Activate.
- Open the new file-manager menu in the dashboard. Confirm that the file tree loads before changing any permissions.
If the tree is empty or actions fail, go to the permissions check below. Do not respond by exposing a larger server directory or making files broadly writable.
Limit the root path before granting access
Set the plugin’s root-path or public-root option to the smallest directory that satisfies the job. For a media or document workflow, that might be a dedicated uploads subdirectory; for a maintenance task, it may be the relevant WordPress directory. Advanced File Manager documents roots outside the WordPress directory, but that power should be used only when the task genuinely requires it.
- Do not expose the whole server when one project directory is enough.
- Hide unrelated folders and sensitive files where the plugin provides path-privacy or hidden-item controls.
- Recheck the root after plugin updates, migrations, and changes to the site’s directory layout.
Configure operations by role
Separate read access from write access. A person delivering downloadable documents generally needs browse and download, not PHP editing or deletion. Reserve upload, edit, rename, archive, and delete capabilities for a small, trusted maintenance group.

Practical permission tiers
- Read-only: browse and download within the selected root.
- Content operator: upload and rename approved documents, with no code editing or deletion outside the working folder.
- Site maintainer: temporary edit, archive, and delete rights for a narrowly defined path.
Use role restrictions, per-user controls, and operation toggles when the plugin offers them. Avoid granting a general administrator access to unrelated server directories merely because WordPress labels the account “Administrator.”
Test the setup without touching PHP
- Create a disposable folder inside the intended root.
- Upload a harmless text file.
- Rename it, download it, and verify the downloaded copy.
- Remove the test file and folder.
This sequence checks the selected root, browser workflow, and basic filesystem permissions while avoiding the risk of editing a live PHP file. Stop if the plugin reaches outside the expected directory or displays files that should be private.
Fix permission errors at the server level
WordPress file editing works only when the account running WordPress can write the target files. A failed upload or save is usually a filesystem ownership or permission problem, not a reason to grant unrestricted access in the plugin.

- Identify the account used by the web server or PHP process and the ownership of the target directory.
- Give that account ownership or narrowly scoped group access to the directory that must be changed.
- Use your host’s file manager, SFTP, or SSH to correct ownership and permissions.
- Retry the disposable-file test, then grant only the operations required for the job.
WordPress’s permissions guidance warns against making the entire installation world-writable. If you cannot establish safe ownership, ask the host to correct it rather than weakening permissions across the site.
Back up before editing code
Make a tested backup of all relevant files before changing PHP, JavaScript, configuration, or plugin code. Keep a known-good replacement or a fresh original package available. A syntax error can produce a blank screen or prevent WordPress from loading; recovery may require restoring the file outside the dashboard.
- Confirm that the backup can actually be downloaded or restored.
- Keep SFTP, SSH, or hosting-panel access documented for emergency repair.
- Prefer a staging copy for substantial changes and use the dashboard editor only for small, understood edits.
When SFTP or SSH is the safer choice
SFTP provides the FTP workflow while encrypting the password and other data during transmission. Use SFTP or SSH for incident response, bulk changes, sensitive administration, or any situation where a browser-based write interface adds unnecessary exposure. A dashboard file manager is convenient for occasional, tightly scoped tasks; it is not a substitute for secure server access and a recovery plan.

Maintain and review the plugin
Keep the plugin updated and remove it when it is no longer part of your operating process. Review its root path, role rules, hidden-file settings, and frontend exposure after every update.
The published changelogs show why this matters. Advanced File Manager version 5.4.14 lists a security fix dated September 9, 2026, alongside earlier authorization, traversal, and editor-related fixes. File Manager version 8.0.6 lists security fixes dated September 23, 2026, and describes a vulnerability chain that could allow PHP-file writing or execution after an administrator session was compromised. These dates are release-history facts, not a guarantee that a particular installation is secure; check the current changelog and update promptly.
Troubleshoot common failures
The file tree is empty
Check the configured root path and whether the web-server account can read it. Restore the narrow path first; do not jump to a server-wide root.

Uploads or saves fail
Check directory ownership and write access for the account running WordPress. Correct them through SFTP, SSH, or the host file manager, then repeat the low-risk test.
A change causes a blank screen
Use the backup or a known-good original to restore the edited file through SFTP, SSH, or the hosting panel. Do not depend on the broken dashboard plugin for recovery.
Users can see too much
Immediately disable unnecessary roles or the plugin, narrow the root, and review hidden-path and frontend settings before re-enabling access.
