To add a website link in Google Sheets on a computer, select a cell—or highlight text inside it—choose Insert > Link, enter the web address, then click Apply. For a link whose destination or visible label comes from other cells, use the HYPERLINK formula, such as =HYPERLINK("https://example.com","Visit site").

Add a website link on a computer

  1. Open your spreadsheet and select the cell where the link should appear. If the cell already has text and only part of it should be clickable, highlight that text within the cell first.
  2. Choose Insert > Link. You can also select the text and use Ctrl+K on Windows or ChromeOS, or ⌘+K on Mac.
  3. In the link dialog, enter the website URL. You can also enter an email address or search for a website. If you selected existing text, check the Text field and edit what readers will see if needed.
  4. Click Apply.

If you selected text rather than an empty cell, the link is attached to that text. A cell can contain multiple links on different text segments, so you can make more than one phrase in a cell clickable.

HYPERLINK Creating a link whose destination or label is supplied by cell values The formula needs a valid URL argument and supported protocol.

For an ordinary web address, the formula is optional: Google Sheets automatically converts most valid URLs typed into a cell into links. The formula is useful when you want a friendlier label than the URL or want to build the destination from spreadsheet data.

Create a link with HYPERLINK

The function syntax is =HYPERLINK(url, [link_label]). The URL can be a quoted address or a cell reference. The optional label can be quoted text or a cell reference; if you leave it out, the URL is used as the visible label.

Use a fixed website address and label

Enter this formula in the cell where the link should appear:

=HYPERLINK("https://example.com","Visit site")

The cell displays “Visit site” as the link label instead of displaying the full address.

Use the address and label from cells

If A2 contains a URL and B2 contains the desired label, enter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

=HYPERLINK(A2,B2)

This lets the link destination and its display text come from spreadsheet data rather than being typed into the formula. If the URL value changes, the formula uses the value in A2; if the label changes, it uses the value in B2.

Know which URL protocols work

Google’s function reference lists http://, https://, mailto:, aim:, ftp://, gopher://, telnet:// and news:// as permitted protocols. If a URL has no protocol, Sheets assumes http://. With another protocol, the formula can display its label without creating an active hyperlink. If the URL argument evaluates to an error, the formula returns an error.

Link to a range in the spreadsheet

To make a cell jump to another range in the same spreadsheet, select the cell that should hold the link and choose Insert > Link. In the dialog, choose Select a range of cells to link, select the destination range, then click OK and Apply.

This is an internal spreadsheet link, not a website URL. Use it when readers need to jump to a particular range rather than open a web page.

Edit or remove a link

On a computer, right-click a linked cell and choose Edit link to change the link, or choose Unlink to remove it. If a cell contains multiple linked text segments, keep the distinction in mind between changing one destination and removing links: the cell can hold more than one link, so review its text and links before editing.

Use links in Google Sheets on iPhone or iPad

Google’s mobile instructions allow a link on text, a cell or a shape to be edited or removed by tapping it and using the link controls. There is an important limitation when a cell contains multiple links: while editing on iPhone or iPad, only the first link appears, and editing the link overwrites the existing links. If preserving multiple links in one cell matters, take care before editing it on a mobile device.

Troubleshoot a link that does not behave as expected

  • The cell shows the address instead of a custom label: In the formula method, supply the optional second argument, such as =HYPERLINK("https://example.com","Visit site"). Without a label, Sheets uses the URL as the label.
  • The formula shows an error: Check whether the URL argument evaluates to an error and whether the destination uses a protocol supported by HYPERLINK. A URL with an unsupported protocol may show the link label without making it an active link.
  • You want only part of existing cell text linked: Highlight the specific text before choosing Insert > Link. Selecting the cell alone is not the same as selecting the text segment.
  • You need to change or remove an existing link: On a computer, right-click the linked cell and choose Edit link or Unlink. On iPhone or iPad, use the link controls, but note the multiple-link editing limitation described above.
  • A typed address did not become a link: Sheets automatically converts most valid URLs, not necessarily every possible string. Use Insert > Link to add the destination explicitly, or use HYPERLINK when you need a formula-generated link.

ScreenshotNeo is for a different job: capturing a website as an image or PDF, not inserting a hyperlink into a spreadsheet. If your goal is to take a clean screenshot of a web page, its API can return a screenshot from one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
