Open the website in Safari on your iPhone, tap Share, choose Add to Home Screen, then tap Add. Safari places an icon on that iPhone’s Home Screen. You can optionally turn on Open as Web App if you want the site to launch in an app-like window.

Add a website icon from Safari

The procedure uses Safari’s Share menu. Open the actual site first; you cannot add a useful shortcut until Safari is displaying the page you want to launch.

  1. Open Safari. On your iPhone, launch Safari and navigate to the website.
  2. Open the page actions. Depending on Safari’s tab layout, tap the Page Menu and then Share, or tap the Share button directly.
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen. Scroll through the available actions until you see Add to Home Screen, then tap it.
  4. Choose the launch mode. Review the name and decide whether to enable Open as Web App. This switch is optional; it is not required merely to place an icon on the Home Screen.
  5. Tap Add. Safari adds the website icon to the Home Screen on that iPhone.

Return to the Home Screen and look for the new icon. Tapping it opens the saved website. The icon is created on the device where you perform these steps; Apple says it does not automatically appear on your other devices.

What “Open as Web App” changes

Open as Web App controls how the shortcut launches the site. Leave it off if you simply want a Home Screen shortcut that opens the site in Safari. Turn it on when you want the website to behave more like an app.

When to leave it off

  • You want normal Safari navigation and browser controls.
  • You are adding a quick link to a site you visit occasionally.
  • You prefer the page to open as an ordinary Safari tab.

When to turn it on

  • You use the site frequently and want an app-like launch.
  • You want the web app to be capable of receiving notifications, where the site and iPhone support them.
  • You want to quit it like another app rather than treating it as a normal Safari tab.

Enabling this option does not turn the website into a native App Store application. It changes the way Safari presents and launches the website. The underlying service remains a website, so its available features still depend on that site and on your iPhone’s settings.

If “Add to Home Screen” is missing

The action can be lower in the Share list or hidden from the currently displayed actions. You can add it back without installing anything.

  1. Open the page’s Share menu in Safari.
  2. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the actions list.
  3. Tap Edit Actions.
  4. Find Add to Home Screen and add it to the available actions.
  5. Return to the Share menu and tap Add to Home Screen, then tap Add.

Safari’s wording and button position can vary with the tab layout you use. If you see a Page Menu instead of a Share button, open the Page Menu first and then choose Share. The important destination is the same: the Share actions list and its Add to Home Screen command.

Check the result on the correct device

After tapping Add, close the Share sheet and swipe through the iPhone’s Home Screen pages. Search for the site name if you do not immediately see the icon. The icon is local to the iPhone on which you added it. Do not expect the same icon to appear automatically on an iPad or another iPhone signed in to the same account; Apple’s guidance says the icon appears only on the device where it was added.

If you added the wrong page, repeat the process while viewing the correct URL. Safari uses the page currently open when you invoke Share, so a home page, login page and deep link can produce different shortcuts.

Troubleshooting checklist

The Share button or Page Menu is not where the instructions say

Safari has more than one tab-layout presentation. In one layout, Apple describes opening the Page Menu and then Share; in another, Share is available as a button. Look for either control while the target page is open, rather than relying on a fixed screen position.

Add to Home Screen is not visible

Scroll to the bottom of the Share actions and tap Edit Actions. Add the missing action, then reopen or revisit the Share list and select it. This is the documented remedy when the command is not initially shown.

The icon was added, but it is not on another Apple device

That is expected. The Home Screen icon is added only to the device used for the procedure. Repeat the steps separately on each iPhone or iPad where you want the shortcut.

The site opens like a normal Safari page instead of an app

When you created the icon, Open as Web App may have been left off. The switch is an optional choice during creation, and the ordinary shortcut behavior is different from the app-like mode. Create the shortcut again from the site’s Safari page and select the switch if that is the behavior you want.

The web app does not send notifications

Turning on Open as Web App makes notifications possible; it does not guarantee that every website will send them. The site must support web notifications, and iPhone notification permissions and other site requirements still apply.

The icon name or destination is not what you expected

Check that Safari was displaying the intended page before opening Share. A shortcut is created from the current page, so start again from the exact page you want to launch. If Safari offers a name during the Add to Home Screen step, review it before tapping Add.

Privacy and practical expectations

Adding an icon does not download a separate native application or move the website’s content onto the phone. It creates a Home Screen entry for the website. The site can still require an internet connection, an account or a login, and its behavior can change when the site owner updates the page.

The optional web-app mode is best understood as a launch and presentation choice. It can provide app-like opening, app-style quitting and, for supporting sites, notifications. It is not a promise that every browser feature, account flow or notification will behave exactly like an App Store app.

For developers documenting this workflow

If you are writing support instructions, use the labels users actually see: Share, Add to Home Screen, Edit Actions and Open as Web App. Mention both Safari layouts so readers do not stop when their button appears in a different place. Make the device limitation explicit: the icon is created on the iPhone where the user performs the steps.

For screenshots in a help article or release checklist, capture the page and the relevant Safari state separately. A screenshot service can provide a clean reference image of the website itself, but it cannot press the iPhone’s Share button or place an icon on a user’s Home Screen.

If your goal is to obtain a clean image of the website for documentation, QA or a support guide—not to create the iPhone shortcut—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one request. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents such as Claude or Cursor take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. This cURL example saves a WebP image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

These calls create website images; the iPhone Home Screen procedure above is still required when you want a tappable icon. Sign up for the free ScreenshotNeo plan to get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does adding the icon install an App Store app?

No. It adds a Home Screen entry for the website. Selecting Open as Web App changes the launch experience but does not convert the site into a native App Store application.

Can I add the same website to more than one iPhone?

Yes, but you must perform the Safari steps separately on each device because the icon is added only to the device where you create it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Open as Web App required?

No. It is an optional setting for app-like opening and related web-app behavior; the icon can be added without enabling it.

The Bottom Line

In Safari, open the site, choose Share → Add to Home Screen, optionally enable Open as Web App, and tap Add. If the command is hidden, add it through Edit Actions.
