If you cannot find a Title Attribute box, you are probably using the other editor—or the field is hidden in Screen Options.
Choose the editor that manages your menu

A title attribute is optional supporting text. Your visible navigation label must still explain the destination on its own; do not hide an essential warning or purpose in a tooltip.
Add the attribute in a classic theme
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance → Menus and choose the menu you want to edit.
- Open Screen Options at the top-right of the page. Under the advanced menu properties, enable Title Attribute if it is not already selected. WordPress describes this field as “The attribute used when displaying the label.” Appearance Menus Screen
- Expand the menu item, enter concise supplemental text in Title Attribute, and leave the Navigation Label as a clear, visible link name.
- Click Save Menu.
- Open a page containing the menu and inspect the relevant anchor in your browser’s developer tools if you need to confirm the rendered HTML.
The classic walker does not necessarily print a title attribute when the stored value is empty or duplicates the menu or link title. Therefore, entering the same words as the visible label may result in no title attribute in the final markup. Walker_Nav_Menu reference
Add it to a block-theme navigation menu
- Open Appearance → Editor.
- Edit the template or template part containing the site’s Navigation block, commonly the header.
- Select the individual navigation link and open its link settings. Current WordPress.com instructions identify a Title Attribute field in these settings for block-theme links. Advanced menu settings
- Enter useful supplemental text, then save the editor and site changes.
This is a block-based menu, not the classic Appearance → Menus screen. A classic menu interface can still be available on some hybrid themes or through plugins, so the presence of both screens does not prove that they edit the same navigation. Set a title programmatically for classic menus
For links generated through wp_nav_menu() and the classic walker, use the nav_menu_link_attributes filter. The callback receives the attributes array, menu item, menu arguments, and depth, and must return the modified array. The hook was introduced in WordPress 3.6.0; its $depth parameter was added in 4.1.0. nav_menu_link_attributes

This filter only affects output that passes through the classic menu API. A block navigation renderer, custom walker, theme code, or later filter may change the result. After adding code, inspect the actual anchor and test desktop, mobile, and expanded submenu states.
Why the field is missing or the attribute does not appear
- Screen Options is hiding it: On the classic menu screen, enable Title Attribute before expanding the menu item.
- You are editing a block theme: Use Appearance → Editor and select the link inside the Navigation block instead of following classic-menu instructions.
- The value matches the label: The classic walker can omit a stored title when it is empty or equivalent to the menu/link title.
- The menu is rendered by another system: A Navigation block, custom walker, plugin, or later filter may not use the classic menu field or hook.
- You forgot to save: Save the menu in the classic editor or save the site/editor changes in the Site Editor, then reload a page that actually uses that navigation.
Use title attributes without creating an accessibility problem
W3C WAI describes a title as extra information that may clarify a link’s purpose, but cautions: “Because of the extensive user agent limitations in supporting access to the title attribute, authors should use caution in applying this technique.” WCAG Technique H33

Keep the essential destination, action, and any warning in the visible link text. If a visitor must know the information before activating the link, put it in the label or nearby visible content rather than relying on a hover tooltip. The title attribute is not alternative text, is not a replacement for a meaningful label, and is not consistently exposed by every browser or assistive technology. Use Appearance → Menus plus Screen Options → Title Attribute for classic menus, the selected link’s settings in the Navigation block for block themes, or nav_menu_link_attributes for classic-menu code. Treat the attribute as optional supplementary text, never as a substitute for a clear visible label.
