Yes—Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD can pair with compatible Bluetooth game controllers directly, without an adapter. Apple lists supported PlayStation DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, several Bluetooth Xbox controllers, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controller, and MFi-compatible controllers. Pairing a controller does not guarantee that every game or every controller feature will work.
Which controllers work with Apple TV?
Apple lists these controller families for Apple TV:
- Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, including model 1708, and Xbox Series X/S controllers
- Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller
- PlayStation DualShock 4, DualSense, and DualSense Edge
- MFi-compatible controllers
Other Bluetooth controllers may work, but check the manufacturer’s specifications for explicit Apple TV or tvOS support. “Wireless” alone is not enough: a gamepad that communicates only through a proprietary 2.4GHz USB receiver is not a safe choice for Apple TV. Apple’s standard setup is Bluetooth. See Apple’s list of wireless game controllers.
Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD support up to four Bluetooth game controllers at once, or one controller when a Bluetooth audio accessory is also in use. The number that works in practice can also depend on the app, controller, software, and wireless environment.

Before you pair
- Charge the controller or install fresh batteries.
- Disconnect its USB cable unless the manufacturer specifically requires it for pairing.
- Temporarily disconnect the controller from nearby consoles, phones, tablets, or computers. It may reconnect to a device it has used before.
- Keep the controller near Apple TV, and have the Siri Remote available to open the pairing controls.
- Install available Apple TV and controller firmware updates.
- Check that the game you want to play supports a controller; not every Apple TV game does.
Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller
- Turn on the controller and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode. The button combination depends on the model; use the controller maker’s instructions.
- On Apple TV, hold the TV button on the Siri Remote to open Control Center.
- Select Game Controllers, then choose your controller from the list.
- If Apple TV asks for a PIN or code, enter it. Wait for the connected status.
- Open a controller-compatible game and test movement, selection, and the menu button.
If you do not see the Game Controllers control, or prefer the Settings route, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth and select the controller under nearby devices. Apple documents the Bluetooth route in its Apple TV Bluetooth setup guide.
Pair an Xbox controller
- Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
- Hold the controller’s Connect button for several seconds, until it enters pairing mode.
- On Apple TV, open Control Center > Game Controllers, or go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.
- Select the Xbox controller and wait for it to connect.
Apple’s Xbox controller instructions cover the supported models. The specific model matters: some older Xbox controllers do not have Bluetooth and cannot pair directly this way. If Apple TV says a firmware update is required, follow Microsoft’s instructions to update the controller, then try again. Microsoft’s general statement that a controller works with Bluetooth devices is not, by itself, confirmation that every model or firmware revision works with Apple TV.

Pair a PlayStation controller
- If the controller is on, hold the PS button until it turns off. Disconnect any USB cable.
- Put it into pairing mode:
- DualShock 4: Hold PS + Share until the light bar flashes.
- DualSense or DualSense Edge: Hold PS + Create until the light bar flashes.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.
- Select the controller. If it pairs but does not connect, press and release the PS button.
Apple provides model-specific guidance for connecting a PlayStation controller. Bluetooth is the practical Apple TV method; do not assume that USB pairing instructions for other Apple devices apply to Apple TV.

Pair another Bluetooth or MFi controller
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to make the controller discoverable, then open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth and select it. Enter a PIN if Apple TV requests one. There is no universal pairing-button combination for other controllers. If the product documentation mentions iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, or Windows but not Apple TV or tvOS, compatibility is not assured.
Customize controls or use two controllers together
Basic Bluetooth pairing is separate from controller customization. Apple’s custom controller profiles require tvOS 16 or later, and only supported controllers and controls expose the options. To create a profile, open the controller’s settings through Control Center’s Game Controllers panel or Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth, select the connected controller, choose Add Profile, name it, and assign the available controls. You can choose Reset to Defaults to undo changes or Delete This Profile to remove a profile.

Apple TV also has a Buddy Controller option for combining two compatible controllers as one player—for accessibility, teaching, or helping another player. Connect both, select the intended primary controller in its settings, choose Buddy Controller, and then select the secondary controller. Only one controller can be primary at a time. See Apple’s game controller guide for these options.

If Apple TV cannot find or connect to the controller
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm pairing mode. A powered-on controller is not necessarily discoverable. Repeat the model-specific pairing command and look for a flashing indicator.
- Stop another device from claiming it. Turn off Bluetooth on, or disconnect the controller from, a nearby console, phone, tablet, or computer.
- Check power and range. Charge or replace batteries, restart the controller, and bring it closer to Apple TV.
- Try Bluetooth settings again. Open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth and check the nearby-device list.
- Reduce wireless congestion. Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth accessories and move sources of interference away. Check whether a Bluetooth audio accessory is connected; Apple’s stated controller limit is one in that configuration.
- Restart and update. Restart Apple TV and the controller, then install available tvOS and controller firmware updates.
- Forget and pair again. If Apple TV remembers the controller but it will not reconnect, select it in Bluetooth settings, choose Forget This Device, put it back in pairing mode, and pair from the start.
If the controller appears but still will not connect after these steps, verify that the exact model supports Bluetooth in a mode recognized by Apple TV. A controller that relies on a proprietary USB receiver is not made compatible simply because it is wireless. Apple’s Bluetooth accessory troubleshooting guidance recommends checking power, range, interference, updates, and re-pairing.
It connects, but the game does not respond
A successful Bluetooth connection only means Apple TV recognizes the controller; the app must also support controller input. Test it in another known controller-compatible game before treating this as a pairing failure. Xbox and PlayStation buttons have different printed labels, and an on-screen prompt may show a different layout from the one on your controller. Advanced features—such as haptics, adaptive triggers, touchpad, motion controls, rumble, or headset audio—are even more dependent on the game and controller.
Disconnect or remove a controller
Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth and select the controller. Disconnect Device ends the current connection but keeps the pairing, so it can reconnect later. Forget This Device removes the saved pairing; you will need to put the controller into pairing mode and pair it again.

If you already own a supported Xbox or PlayStation controller, try that first. A current Bluetooth Xbox Wireless Controller is a practical option if you prefer its layout and replaceable AA batteries; verify the specific model before buying, since older versions may lack Bluetooth. DualSense is a supported option if you prefer its layout and built-in rechargeable battery, but do not buy it on the assumption that every game will use its advanced haptics or triggers.
For a third-party pad, prioritize an explicit Apple TV or tvOS compatibility statement, Bluetooth connectivity, a documented pairing procedure, and firmware-update support. “Works with Apple devices” can mean only iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Avoid choosing a controller based only on Bluetooth branding or popularity on Android and Windows.
