The simplest way to add a Stripe donation button is to create a Stripe Payment Link, then attach it to a button on your WordPress site. If you want a shortcode, an embedded form, or WordPress.com’s built-in Tips button, the right steps depend on whether your site is on WordPress.com or self-hosted.

Choose the setup that fits your site

Setup Good fit for What donors use
Stripe Payment Link on a WordPress button A straightforward button with minimal WordPress setup A Stripe-hosted payment page
Stripe Buy button embed Placing Stripe-generated embed code on a page A Stripe-provided embedded button and payment flow
WordPress donation plugin A shortcode, block, widget, or plugin-specific donation page Depends on the plugin; it may use a hosted form or another flow
WordPress.com Tips button Quick, one-time support on an eligible WordPress.com site A WordPress.com Donations Form block that processes payments through Stripe

WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress are different products. WordPress.com plan rules determine whether its native Tips button is available. On self-hosted WordPress, plugin and editor compatibility determine whether you can use a shortcode, block, or embed.

Create a Stripe Payment Link

  1. Decide what donors can give. Stripe’s documented Payment Link options include fixed-amount donations, which can be one-time or recurring, and customer-chosen amounts for one-time donations. Do not assume the customer-chosen amount option also supports recurring gifts.
  2. Create a donation Payment Link in Stripe. Configure the amount and frequency for the kind of donation you want to accept. Stripe says Payment Links can be reused and shared.
  3. Set an appropriate call to action. Stripe’s support instructions describe changing the call to action to “donate” where appropriate. In Stripe’s Payment Link API documentation, donate is described as “Recommended when accepting donations.”
  4. Save and copy the Payment Link URL. You will use this URL as the destination for your WordPress button.

The Stripe-hosted link is a practical default when you want donors to complete payment on Stripe’s page rather than add a more involved form to WordPress.

Add the link to a WordPress button

  1. Open the WordPress page or post where you want the donation button.
  2. Add a Button block in the editor.
  3. Enter clear button text, such as “Donate” or “Make a donation.”
  4. Set the button’s link to the Stripe Payment Link URL you copied.
  5. Save or publish the page, then open it as a visitor and follow the button to confirm that it reaches the intended Stripe payment page.

This approach uses a regular WordPress button; it does not require a donation plugin or Stripe embed code. If your editor or site setup does not offer a Button block, use the button or link feature available in your page editor, or consider a compatible plugin.

Use Stripe’s embedded Buy button instead

Stripe also documents an embed option for a Payment Link: select “Buy button” for the link and copy the generated code. Add that code to a WordPress page only if your editor and site setup allow the relevant embed or HTML code. WordPress.com plan restrictions and editor capabilities can differ, so a hosted Payment Link behind an ordinary WordPress button may be easier if the embed cannot be added.

Use a WordPress donation plugin

Plugins can provide a shortcode, block, Elementor widget, menu button, or hosted donation form. Their payment flow, recurring-gift support, fees, donor-data handling, and setup requirements are not interchangeable. Review the plugin’s current documentation and terms before choosing one.

Digital Lychee Donation Notifications for Stripe

This plugin’s documented setup uses a Stripe Payment Link URL in its settings and the shortcode [stripe_donation_button] on the page where the button should appear. Its notification feature also requires a Stripe webhook endpoint and signing secret. That additional webhook configuration is for notifications; it is separate from the basic task of placing the donation button.

KindLumen

KindLumen documents a block and the shortcodes [kindlumen_button] and [kindlumen_form]. The vendor says it embeds a hosted form, uses the organization’s own Stripe account, and does not store card or donor data in WordPress. These are KindLumen-specific statements, not guarantees about other plugins.

Payment Page

Payment Page documents a shortcode and an Elementor widget. Its WordPress.org listing, verified September 30, 2026, states that the free version charges a 2% Payment Page platform fee on Stripe transactions, in addition to Stripe processing fees. Check the listing and current terms before activation because product fees can change.

If your site is on WordPress.com

WordPress.com documents a native Tips button made with the Donations Form block. It requires connecting a Stripe account and, according to its support page last reviewed August 11, 2026, is available on Premium, Business, and Commerce plans. WordPress.com describes the Tips button as intended for quick, one-time support, distinguishing it from a donation form for charitable giving and recurring contributions. If you need recurring contributions or a more complete donation form, choose a suitable alternative rather than treating Tips as a general-purpose recurring donation setup.

Check the donor experience, costs, and data handling

  • Payment flow: Confirm whether donors go to Stripe-hosted checkout, an embedded experience, a popup, or a plugin-managed form.
  • Gift options: Verify whether the selected setup supports your required amounts and frequencies. Stripe’s customer-chosen amount option described here is for one-time donations; plugin options vary.
  • Fees: Account for Stripe processing fees and any plugin or platform charge. For example, Payment Page’s free-tier listing states a 2% platform fee on Stripe transactions, as well as Stripe processing fees. KindLumen describes no platform fee for organizations, but Stripe processing fees still apply.
  • Donor information: Check whether donor details are stored in WordPress, handled by a hosted form, or managed another way. Do not assume one plugin’s data practices apply to another.
  • Notifications and integrations: Establish whether email notifications or other features require separate configuration, such as the webhook endpoint and signing secret documented for Digital Lychee Donation Notifications for Stripe.
  • Eligibility and compatibility: Confirm that your WordPress.com plan, self-hosted editor, and chosen plugin support the method you intend to use.

A Stripe payment setup by itself does not establish that an organization or donation is tax-deductible. Do not describe donations as tax-deductible unless the recipient’s status and the applicable rules support that claim.
