To add a sound to a Discord server’s Soundboard, use the desktop app or Discord in a desktop browser, join a voice channel, open Soundboard, and select Add Sound. Choose your clip, fill in the details shown, and upload it. You need the server’s Create Expressions permission and an available Soundboard slot. Discord’s current guide says you can play sounds on mobile, but upload them only on desktop or browser.
What Discord Soundboard does
Soundboard plays a short clip into a voice channel so other people in that channel can hear it. It is different from attaching an audio file in a text channel, sharing computer audio during a stream, or playing music through a bot. To use a server’s custom sound, join a voice channel in that server and play it from Soundboard.
Discord’s Soundboard guide is the reference for the current upload and playback workflow. Icon placement and labels can change between client versions.
Before you upload
- Open Discord in the desktop app or a desktop browser. The mobile app supports playback, not uploading, according to Discord’s current guide.
- Join the server where the sound should be available and have a local audio file ready.
- Make sure you have Create Expressions permission and the server has an unused Soundboard slot.
- You may also need access to a voice channel. Playback is governed separately by voice-channel permissions.
How to add a sound on Discord desktop
- Open Discord and select the server where you want the sound.
- Join a voice channel in that server.
- Open the Soundboard panel using its Soundboard/confetti icon in the voice-channel controls.
- Select Add Sound.
- Choose the audio file on your device.
- Complete the details in the upload panel. Discord’s upload controls can include a sound name, emoji, and default volume.
- Confirm the upload. When it finishes, find the sound in the panel and test it.
In the panel, hover over the sound and select its play control to broadcast it to people in the voice channel. A separate preview control, when shown, lets you listen locally rather than broadcast.

Discord’s public guide does not establish a current supported-format list, maximum clip duration, or Soundboard-specific file-size limit. Follow the limits and file types shown in the live uploader; do not assume that Discord’s general attachment limit is the same as its Soundboard limit.
Which permissions do you need?

These are distinct permissions. Older how-to pages may refer to Manage Server for uploads, but Discord’s current guide names Create Expressions for adding sounds and Manage Expressions for managing them. See Discord’s permissions documentation and Soundboard documentation.
If you are a server owner or administrator, open Server Settings > Roles, choose the relevant role, and enable Create Expressions. Grant Use Soundboard as well if that role should play sounds. If a server-level permission does not take effect, inspect the voice channel’s permission overrides; channel settings can allow or deny access for a role or member.

Can you add Soundboard sounds on mobile?
Not in the Discord mobile app: Discord’s current guide says uploads are available through desktop or browser. Use Discord on a computer to add the clip. On mobile, you can play sounds already available to you:
- Join a voice channel.
- Tap the screen to reveal the voice controls, then drag the toolbar upward.
- Tap Soundboard and select a sound.
Soundboard slots and Nitro
A server has a base capacity of 8 Soundboard slots. Discord documents capacities of 24 at Boost Tier 1, 36 at Tier 2, and 48 at Tier 3. Boost perks and the requirements for tiers can change; check Discord’s Server Boosting FAQ for current details. If the server has filled its slots, an administrator must remove a sound or the server must qualify for more capacity before another can be added.
Nitro is not required to use Soundboard sounds within the server where they are available. Nitro is relevant if you want to use sounds from other servers across servers, subject to permissions. It does not bypass server permissions or increase that server’s Soundboard capacity. See Discord’s Nitro FAQ.

Manage or delete a sound
Users with Manage Expressions can manage server sounds. Open Server Settings > Soundboard, find the sound, and use the available editing controls or its X control to remove it. Removing a sound deletes it from that server’s Soundboard for everyone; it does not merely hide it from your own view.
For a well-managed Soundboard, use clear names, avoid duplicate clips, keep default volumes reasonably consistent, and remove sounds that are disruptive or unauthorized. Give Create Expressions only to trusted roles if you want a wider group to play sounds without letting everyone upload them.
Troubleshooting: why can’t I add or hear a sound?
“Add Sound” is missing
- Switch from the mobile app to Discord desktop or a desktop browser.
- Join a voice channel in the target server, then open its Soundboard panel.
- Ask an administrator to check whether you have Create Expressions.
- Ask an administrator to check Server Settings > Soundboard for a full slot list.
- Check role and channel permission overrides. If it still does not appear, restart or update Discord, or try the other desktop option (app versus browser).
The file is rejected or the upload fails
Check the file requirements shown in the current upload dialog. A malformed or unsupported file, a limit enforced by the uploader, missing permission, a full server, or a temporary client problem can prevent upload. Try a short, ordinary audio clip with a simple filename; if needed, re-export or convert it with an audio editor, then restart Discord and retry. Discord’s general attachment-size allowance is not proof of the Soundboard’s own limit.

The sound appears, but playback does not work
Confirm that you are connected to a voice channel and have Use Soundboard permission. Check whether a channel override blocks it. If you are trying to use a sound from another server, check Use External Sounds and the applicable account requirements.
Other people cannot hear the sound
Everyone needs to be in the same voice channel. Listeners who are deafened will not hear it, and each listener’s Soundboard volume can be set to zero under User Settings > Voice & Video > Soundboard. Also check that the sound’s configured volume is not too low and that Discord’s voice output is working. Being muted is not the same as being deafened; Discord notes that sounds such as entrance sounds can play while a user is muted, but not while deafened.
Use sounds you have the right to upload
Discord says users are responsible for making sure their uploaded sounds comply with its Terms of Service and Community Guidelines, including respecting intellectual-property rights. Use original recordings, public-domain clips, properly licensed effects, or material you have permission to use. Do not assume that a clip is permitted simply because it is short or easy to download.

Can I upload a Soundboard sound from my phone?
Discord’s current guide says Soundboard uploads are available through desktop or browser, not the mobile app. You can play available sounds from mobile.
Can regular members add sounds?

Do I need Nitro to add or play a sound in my server?
