WordPress already includes a password generator: use wp_generate_password() to create a password candidate. If you only need to display a suggested password, that function is the core of a small plugin or theme feature. Changing a user’s stored password is a separate, security-sensitive action that also requires authorization and CSRF protection.
Choose whether you need a suggestion or a password change
Decide what the feature should do before adding code. A generator can create and display a candidate without touching an account. A password-changing feature must update the correct user’s account through a protected workflow.
| Feature | What it does | Security requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Generate and display | Creates a candidate with wp_generate_password(); it does not by itself save that value to a user account. |
Escape the value when rendering it. Validate or sanitize any settings supplied by the user. |
| Generate and change | Creates a candidate and updates an account credential. | In addition to safe output and input handling, verify a nonce to help prevent CSRF and separately check that the current user has the required capability. |
Use WordPress’s built-in password generator
The function wp_generate_password() returns a random password using wp_rand() and applies the random_password filter. Its documented defaults are a length of 12 characters, standard special characters enabled, and extra special characters disabled.

Minimal example: display a candidate
This example belongs in a plugin or another context where the WordPress function is available. It generates a value and escapes it for HTML output; it does not change a user’s account password.
<?php
$password = wp_generate_password();
echo '<p>Suggested password: <code>' . esc_html( $password ) . '</code></p>';
To choose options explicitly, pass the length, whether to include standard special characters, and whether to include extra special characters:

In this example, 16 is the requested length, true includes standard special characters, and false leaves extra special characters out. Choose options based on the requirements of the site or systems where the password will be used; do not assume every integration accepts every character.

For a user’s own account
Check whether the built-in user profile or edit screen already meets the need. WordPress provides password management on user screens, so a custom generator may be unnecessary. The edit_user() reference documents the user-editing workflow.
For registration
WordPress registration already creates a random password through wp_generate_password(). See the core references for register_new_user() and Working with Users before adding a parallel password-generation step.
For an administrative workflow
If you create accounts from the command line, WP-CLI’s wp user create command has a password option that defaults to a random password. This can meet an account-creation need without adding a front-end generator.
If the feature changes a user’s password
Do not treat generating a string as authorization to update an account. Build the account change into a WordPress workflow that checks both request validity and the acting user’s permission.
- Verify a nonce to help protect the request from cross-site request forgery (CSRF).
- Separately use
current_user_can()to check that the current user is allowed to perform the action. - Validate or sanitize any user-provided settings, and escape output when displaying the generated value.
WordPress’s nonce guidance explicitly warns that nonces are not authentication, authorization, or access control. Its security handbook advises validating and sanitizing input and escaping output, while preferring validation or rejection where appropriate. Follow the relevant WordPress APIs rather than inventing a custom password-generation routine.
Best Value
- Time- and headache-saving little volume is organized with tabbed A to Z pages, with space on each page to write down websites, usernames, passwords, and notes.
Do not confuse account passwords with Application Passwords
Application Passwords are revocable, per-application credentials for programmatic access. They are intended to let an integration connect without sharing the user’s main account password; they are not a substitute for an ordinary account-password generator.
