For a standard WooCommerce shipping calculator, configure shipping locations, create shipping zones, add a shipping method to each zone, and test the result in the cart. WooCommerce can show configured shipping options during the cart and checkout flow. To show estimates on individual product pages or return live carrier quotes, you will need an appropriate extension and, for carrier rates, carrier configuration.

Choose where the calculator should appear and how it should price shipping

WooCommerce core lets customers calculate shipping in the cart and see methods available for the zone matching their delivery address. Its built-in methods include Flat Rate, Free Shipping, and Local Pickup. A product-page calculator is a separate extension use case; carrier-calculated rates require an integration rather than just core zones and methods. WooCommerce’s shipping-zone guide and product-page calculator documentation describe these routes.

Route Where the shopper sees it How rates are set What setup involves
Core zones and methods Cart and checkout calculation flow Configured flat, free, pickup, or shipping-class pricing Set zones, order them, and add methods
Product-page calculator extension Product pages, with documented table or popup options Uses configured shipping methods; behavior depends on setup Install the extension and choose products and placement
Carrier-rate integration Rates returned through the configured shipping method Carrier/API-derived rates Configure an extension, carrier access, origin, and package details

Set up a shipping calculator with WooCommerce core

  1. Confirm shipping locations. In WooCommerce, check the store’s shipping location configuration before creating zones. The available destinations determine where shipping can be offered. See Setting up Shipping Zones.
  2. Create zones for the places you serve. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping > Shipping zones, add a descriptive zone name, select its regions, and optionally restrict it by postcode.
  3. Order zones from narrow to broad. WooCommerce checks zones in list order, and each customer matches only one. Place a city or postcode zone above a state, country, or broader international zone if the narrow zone should take priority. A broad zone listed first can claim an address before the more specific zone is reached.
  4. Add a method inside each zone. Choose an appropriate built-in method—Flat Rate, Free Shipping, or Local Pickup—and configure it for that zone. A zone with no shipping method will not offer shipping to matching customers.
  5. Configure Flat Rate if you use it. Set its customer-facing name, tax status, and cost. Flat Rate can charge per order, per item, or by shipping class; classes can distinguish groups such as bulky and small products. When an order contains multiple classes, WooCommerce supports per-class or per-order calculations. The Flat Rate Shipping documentation explains the available settings.
  6. Test addresses in each relevant zone. Check a local postcode, a domestic address outside the local zone, and an address in an international zone if you serve one. Add a product to the cart and confirm that the expected method appears for each address. The customer’s Calculate Shipping flow and its appearance can vary by theme.

Add a calculator to product pages

Use the WooCommerce product-page shipping calculator extension if shoppers need an estimate before adding an item to the cart. The extension documentation describes these installation and configuration steps:

  1. Download the extension ZIP file.
  2. In WordPress Admin, go to Plugins > Add New, upload the ZIP, then install and activate the extension.
  3. Open WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping Calculator.
  4. Choose which product types, categories, tags, or brands should display the calculator.
  5. Select a documented display option, such as an in-page table or popup, and choose its placement around the add-to-cart button or product description.

For the extension’s current options and product-specific behavior, see Shipping Calculator on Product Page Documentation. Availability of settings and compatibility can change, so check the documentation against the extension and WooCommerce versions installed on your site.

Use carrier-calculated rates when configured prices are not enough

Core zones determine which configured shipping methods a customer sees; they do not automatically generate a carrier quote. For carrier-calculated pricing, install and configure a compatible integration. In the FedEx example in WooCommerce’s extension instructions, setup includes the extension, a shipping zone containing FedEx, package and origin details, and FedEx API credentials. The extension obtains dynamic rates from the FedEx API. Confirm current carrier access requirements, available services, and geographic coverage for your store before relying on those rates. The extension documentation describes the example.

Troubleshoot unexpected rates or missing options

  • The wrong zone appears: Check the zone order. Since WooCommerce applies the first matching zone, move more specific postcode or city zones above broader zones.
  • No shipping option appears: Confirm that the address matches the intended zone and that the zone has at least one shipping method. WooCommerce informs customers when no shipping is available for their matching zone.
  • The amount is unexpected: Review the Flat Rate cost and whether the method charges per order, item, or shipping class. For plugin-based methods, WooCommerce’s shipping overview recommends enabling the relevant plugin’s debug mode and adding a product to the cart to inspect useful information.
  • Package-based rates look wrong: Verify product dimensions and package settings. Box-packing extensions use product dimensions to determine which items fit in a package; incorrect product data can affect the resulting calculation. See the WooCommerce shipping overview.
  • The calculator is absent on a product: Check the extension’s product type, category, tag, or brand selection and its display placement settings.

What a shipping calculator does—and does not—do

A calculator displays shipping options and prices based on the store’s configuration and the customer’s destination. With core WooCommerce, those prices come from methods such as flat, free, pickup, or shipping-class rates. A product-page extension changes where the estimate is displayed; it does not by itself make a configured rate a live carrier quote. Carrier pricing requires an integration and the carrier-specific setup it calls for.
