The simplest way to add a printer-friendly option to a WordPress post is to place a clearly labeled button that opens the browser’s print dialog, then use print CSS to hide navigation and other non-article elements. If you need a separate printable URL, an editable print preview, or a document built from multiple posts, a plugin may be a better fit.
Choose the print experience you need
Start by deciding what readers should receive. A print stylesheet keeps the current page and changes its appearance on paper. A plugin can instead create a separate printable document, let readers edit a preview, or compile multiple posts.

Add a simple print button with CSS
1. Add a button to the post template
Place this markup near the post title or at the end of the article, using a template or block approach appropriate to your theme:
<button class="print-post" type="button" onclick="window.print()">Print this post</button>A real button is keyboard-operable and its label describes the action. Include nearby help text telling readers they can also use their browser’s Print command, so the option remains understandable if JavaScript is unavailable. Provide a visible keyboard-focus style for the button in the normal screen stylesheet.

2. Add print-only rules
Add rules to the active theme’s stylesheet or load a dedicated stylesheet with the media attribute set to print. WordPress documentation notes that print styles can control colors, links, headings, titles, author information, metadata, and any other part of a page. The example below is a starting point, not a set of universal selectors: replace the class names with ones used by your theme.

}The goal is to remove interface clutter while retaining the article title, author and date when useful, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, code, captions, and essential images. Underlining links makes them distinguishable on paper; a URL may still be useful to readers, so inspect how your browser handles links in its print output.

3. Load the stylesheet in WordPress
You can keep the rules in the theme stylesheet inside an @media print block, or enqueue a separate print stylesheet. WordPress’s wp_print_styles() reference documents printing stylesheet links. For a maintainable site, prefer the theme’s normal stylesheet-enqueueing approach and verify the stylesheet is loaded on the pages that need it.
Use a plugin when CSS alone is not enough
WP-Print: a separate printable version
WP-Print adds a print link to posts and pages and provides a clean printable document without the theme, sidebar, or navigation. Its directory entry describes optional inclusion of comments and media, a /your-post/print/ URL, a [donotprint]...[/donotprint] shortcode, and theme overrides for print-posts.php, print-comments.php, and print-css.css. After activation, re-save Settings → Permalinks to write the /print/ rewrite rule. Check that the plugin version supports the WordPress version running on your site before deploying it.

PrintFriendly: an editable reader preview
PrintFriendly advertises print, PDF, and email actions, automatic content detection, an editable preview, custom paper sizes, custom headers and footers, and custom CSS. Its directory listing describes a free ad-supported version and an optional Pro upgrade. It suits publishers who want readers to remove unwanted elements or adjust a document without building a separate print template.
PostPDFButton: print the rendered browser page
PostPDFButton prepares the DOM already rendered in the visitor’s browser and invokes the browser’s native print system. It offers controls for the print target, excluded selectors, page size, orientation, margins, page breaks, and lazy-loaded images. This approach is useful when client-side translation or other JavaScript changes need to be reflected in the output.

Its FAQ explains that ordinary page JavaScript cannot silently select the native “Save as PDF” printer or bypass the print dialog. The visitor must choose the available printer or PDF option and complete that browser dialog.

Test the result before publishing
Open browser print preview at desktop and mobile widths and check the output rather than assuming screen styles will translate cleanly. Print rendering varies by browser, and plugins that invoke the native print system inherit that dependence.
- Confirm the correct article appears, with its title and useful author or date details.
- Check that navigation, sidebars, ads, sharing tools, cookie notices, and unwanted comments are hidden.
- Inspect long headings, page breaks, tables, code blocks, links, captions, galleries, and essential images.
- Check lazy-loaded images: they may not be available to print if the page has not loaded them.
- Review the output after changes to the theme, page builder, ad placement, consent interface, or analytics.
