The simplest way to add ratings to WordPress posts is to install a rating plugin, configure its scale and voting rules, then insert the plugin’s block or shortcode where the rating should appear. This guide uses WP-PostRatings as a concrete example and explains how to choose alternatives, handle vote data, and avoid structured-data mistakes.
What you need before adding ratings
- Administrator access to WordPress.
- A decision about the feedback you want: stars or a numeric score, thumbs up/down, written reviews, or a simple helpful/not-helpful response.
- A placement plan for posts, pages, or custom post types.
- A compatibility check. WP-PostRatings 2.0.0 states that it requires WordPress 6.8 and PHP 8.2; requirements can change, so confirm the current listing and your site’s runtime before installing.
For a directory of alternatives, see the current WordPress.org rate-post category. Its active-install and “tested with” figures are changing snapshots, not proof of quality.
Install and configure WP-PostRatings
1. Install and activate the plugin
- In WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for WP-PostRatings, select the plugin, and choose Install Now.
- Click Activate. Review the plugin’s current requirements on its WordPress.org listing first, especially if your PHP or WordPress version is older.
2. Choose the rating format and voter rules
Open WP-Admin → Ratings → Settings. Select the visual shape and scale (for example, a star scale), then decide who may vote and how repeat votes are handled. Make the instruction understandable to visitors and test the result while logged out as well as logged in.
The plugin documents a rating log and separate running totals. Its documentation states: “A rating lives in two places — the running totals each post displays, and a row per vote in the log.” Treat those as separate data when deleting, exporting, or migrating ratings.

Block themes and the block editor
Insert the plugin’s Ratings block in the post or in the appropriate template. WP-PostRatings describes the block as the simplest method and the only one of its documented methods that works in a block theme without editing template files.
Shortcode placement
Add [ratings] in a Shortcode block, post content, or another location that processes shortcodes. With no argument, it rates the post in which it appears. The plugin also documents an ID option for targeting another post and a results-only option for displaying a score without accepting a vote from that location. Check the plugin’s listing for the exact current attribute syntax before using those options.
Classic-theme template placement
For a classic theme, call the_ratings() from the relevant template file. Back up the theme and use a child theme so an update does not overwrite your change. This route is useful when every post needs a consistent position, but it requires PHP-template editing.

Choose the right WordPress rating approach
| Approach | Best fit | Check before adopting |
|---|---|---|
| Star or numeric post rating | Readers who want to score an article quickly | Scale, repeat-vote controls, accessibility label, and post-type support |
| Thumbs up/down | A binary reaction or moderation signal | Whether results are visible, how duplicate votes are prevented, and data export |
| Written reviews with ratings | Products, services, or content needing comments alongside scores | Moderation, privacy, spam controls, and schema output |
| Helpful/not-helpful response | Measuring whether an article solved a reader’s problem | Whether the plugin supports the reports and placement you need |
Compare each plugin’s required WordPress/PHP versions, update activity, support history, accessibility output, caching behavior, and interaction with any SEO or schema plugin. Also verify whether it supports pages and custom post types, not only standard posts.
When another plugin is a better fit
WPSSO Ratings and Reviews extends WordPress comments with ratings and reviews on posts, pages, and custom post types; its listing says WPSSO Core is required. GD Rating System documents multiple rating entities, blocks and shortcodes, and imports from several other plugins, with additional import capability in its Pro version. These may suit review-heavy or migration-heavy sites better than a basic vote widget; confirm current requirements and features on their own listings.
Accessibility and vote administration
Keep the screen-reader label for the displayed score. WP-PostRatings warns that removing or leaving this label empty gives the rating no accessible name; reword it if necessary rather than deleting it.

Review the plugin’s rating log, totals, repeat-vote settings, and REST API routes before launch. Decide who can vote, whether guests are allowed, how repeat votes are identified, how long vote records are retained, and who can access or erase them. Document those choices in your privacy and moderation procedures.
Ratings, caching, and testing
- Open a published post in a private browser window and submit a test vote.
- Confirm that the displayed total and score update as expected.
- Repeat the test under the visitor and logged-in conditions your settings allow.
- Check the page on mobile and with a keyboard and screen reader.
- Purge page, object, and CDN caches, then verify that a fresh visitor sees the intended result.
- Inspect a post that should show results without accepting a new vote, if you use the results-only option.
Do not assume a cached page will show a newly calculated total immediately. Coordinate rating settings with your caching layer and test after cache purges.

Structured data and Google search results
A plugin’s claim that it emits aggregate-rating or review markup does not guarantee stars in Google. Google supports review snippets only for selected types and requires the markup to follow its guidelines and required properties. An eligible page can still receive no rich result.

Ratings must be visible to readers, represent real votes, and use a schema type that matches the page. Never add fabricated scores or counts. Validate the rendered URL with Google’s review snippet documentation and Rich Results Test guidance, then inspect the deployed page.
WP-PostRatings documents Article as its default schema type and provides a filter to change it. That plugin setting does not override Google’s supported types or policies. If an SEO plugin already outputs Article or review markup, inspect the HTML for duplicate or conflicting structured data before enabling another source.
Google also says an entity that controls reviews about itself cannot receive the review feature for LocalBusiness or Organization markup. Follow the rules for the actual content type instead of choosing a schema type merely to pursue stars.

Troubleshooting common problems
The block or shortcode shows nothing
- Confirm the plugin is activated and the post is published.
- Check that the shortcode is being processed in that field and is not inside escaped code markup.
- In a block theme, place the Ratings block in the template or post area where visitors actually view the content.
- Clear site and CDN caches.
Visitors can see a score but cannot vote
- Check the voter permissions and repeat-vote settings under Ratings → Settings.
- Make sure you did not use the shortcode’s results-only option.
- Test in a private window to rule out a prior cookie, session, or logged-in vote.
The score is inaccessible
Restore a non-empty screen-reader label and test the control with keyboard navigation and a screen reader. Do not rely on visual stars alone to communicate the value.
Totals changed after migration or cleanup
Compare the running totals with the vote log. Because those are separate data, deleting log rows does not necessarily mean the displayed totals have been rebuilt. Export or back up both kinds of data before bulk deletion or migration, and follow the plugin’s current administrative documentation.
