To display a PDF inside a WordPress page or post, install a PDF viewer plugin, add its block in the editor, and choose the PDF from your Media Library. If you use the Classic Editor or a compatible page builder, use the plugin’s shortcode instead. Add a separate link to the PDF as a fallback for readers who want to open or download it outside the viewer.
Embed a PDF with a WordPress block
- In your WordPress dashboard, install and activate a PDF viewer plugin, such as PDF Embedder or PDF.js Viewer.
- Edit the page or post where you want the document to appear.
- Insert the plugin’s PDF viewer block.
- Choose an existing PDF from the Media Library, or upload one using the block’s file picker.
- Preview the page and check that the document and the controls you need are visible.
PDF Embedder documents this block-based workflow and provides an editor preview. A PDF link added through WordPress alone is not the same as a plugin viewer embedded in the page.
Use a shortcode in the Classic Editor or a page builder
If your editor or page builder supports regular WordPress shortcodes, add the viewer plugin’s shortcode to the content or a shortcode element. For example, PDF Embedder documents this form:

Replace the example address with the URL of your own PDF. Check the plugin’s current documentation for the shortcode and options supported by the version you install.
Embed a PDF hosted on another site
Use a direct URL to the PDF file, not a link to a sharing page or a document preview page. The remote host must also permit your WordPress site to fetch the file; a direct-looking URL will not work if access is blocked by the host.

PDF.js Viewer recommends using a WordPress attachment ID where possible. When you do use a remote file, test the published page from a reader’s perspective rather than relying only on the editor preview.

Choose a viewer based on the controls you need
Plugins differ in how readers navigate and use a document, and in which controls are included in their free or paid editions. Check the features you need before choosing one.

Add a direct PDF link as a fallback
Place a normal link to the PDF near or below the embedded viewer. That gives readers another way to access the document if the embed is unsuitable for them or a control they need is unavailable. PDF Embedder specifically documents a separate link as a workaround for the free version’s missing toolbar download button.

Use link text that identifies the document, such as “Download the plan summary PDF,” rather than a bare URL. Test the link as well as the viewer.

- Try the viewer controls you intend to offer, such as zoom, fullscreen, print, or download.
- Open the separate PDF link and confirm it reaches the intended file.
