A plugin is the quicker editor-friendly option; custom code gives you more control over the query and post-card markup, but you must build and test the button behavior yourself.
Choose a plugin or custom code

Use Ajax Load More for a shorter setup
The Ajax Load More plugin documents both a block-editor block and a shortcode. Its example shortcode is [ajax_load_more post_type="post, portfolio" posts_per_page="6" button_label="Load More"]. The listing says the shortcode can be placed in the content editor or a theme template. Confirm the current plugin compatibility and any paid add-on costs on the listing before installing.
Use the REST API for a browser-side implementation
The WordPress REST API exposes posts as a paginated collection. A request such as /wp-json/wp/v2/posts?page=2&per_page=6 asks for the second batch of six posts. Adjust the page and batch size to suit the archive. You must write the JavaScript that fetches the response and turns each returned post into the card markup your theme uses; the API does not automatically reproduce a theme’s archive design.
Use WP_Query when the server should build the markup
A PHP endpoint can use WP_Query to run a query for the next batch and return rendered HTML. Iterate through results with have_posts() and the_post(); after a secondary loop, call wp_reset_postdata() to restore the main query’s post context. The endpoint and front-end request still need to be connected to the button.

How the custom “Load More” request works
- Show the first batch. Render the archive’s initial posts as usual and initialize the next-page value to the page after that batch.
- Request the next batch. When the visitor activates the button, request that page from the REST API or your server endpoint.
- Append the returned posts. Insert the new cards after the existing ones rather than replacing the archive.
- Advance only after success. Increase the page value only after a successful response, so a failed request can be retried without skipping a batch.
- Stop when there are no more results. REST responses include the
X-WP-TotalPagesheader. Compare the current page with that total and hide or disable the button at the end. You can also treat a short or empty returned batch as an end condition, but use the documented total-page header when available.
REST API pagination accepts page, per_page, and offset. The permitted per_page range is 1–100, and paginated responses include X-WP-Total and X-WP-TotalPages. WordPress Developer Resources says large queries can hurt performance, which is why per_page is capped at 100; that cap is not a recommended batch size or a performance benchmark. Start with a modest batch and tune it after checking the response and rendered cards on your site. See the WordPress REST API pagination handbook.
Keep later batches consistent with the archive
Every request for more posts must preserve the rules used for the first batch. Carry across the post type, category or taxonomy filters, ordering, and any other query conditions. If the initial archive is filtered but later requests use a general posts query, visitors may see unrelated posts or duplicates. The REST API pagination parameters and WP_Query provide building blocks for pagination and queries; keeping the full archive behavior consistent is your implementation responsibility.

Handle loading, errors, and accessibility
Use a semantic button and make its state clear while a request is in progress. The plugin’s changelog for Load More Ajax reports button state attributes, a screen-reader live status region, and :focus-visible styling; treat these as useful implementation checks, not a guarantee that another plugin or custom implementation includes them.
- Use
<button type="button">rather than a clickable, non-semantic element. - Keep a visible focus indicator so keyboard users can see which control is active.
- Expose a loading or disabled state while fetching, and prevent another click from starting a concurrent request.
- Announce that posts have been added through a polite status region for assistive technology.
- If a request fails, show an understandable message and restore the button so the visitor can try again.
For a public read-only request, do not add authentication automatically: choose the endpoint and data exposure for the actual use case. WordPress’s REST API tutorial contrasts a REST API approach with an admin-AJAX example and discusses nonce handling in its illustrated authenticated context. If you instead build an admin-AJAX handler, follow the security requirements for that handler; the tutorial recommends a nonce for its production example.

Test the button in your theme
- Activate the button once and confirm that the next batch appears after the existing cards.
- Activate it again and check that pagination does not skip or duplicate posts.
- Reach the final page and verify the control is removed or disabled.
- Check the archive’s filters, post type, and ordering across both the initial and later batches.
- Test an empty response and a failed request, including whether the control recovers for another attempt.
- Use keyboard activation and confirm visible focus and an announcement when new posts are added.
- Check the result with your active theme and plugins: generic API data or PHP output does not guarantee a match for every theme’s card markup or query setup.
