Use WordPress’s native wp_login_form() function when you want a login form on a public page or inside a theme template. It keeps the form on your site’s front end while WordPress continues to process authentication normally. If you do not edit theme files, use a maintained front-end-login plugin and insert its documented shortcode into a page, post, sidebar, or widget area.
Choose the right implementation
| Approach | Best for | What you need to weigh |
|---|---|---|
Native wp_login_form() in a template |
Developers and site owners with theme-file access | No plugin dependency, precise markup and styling control, but PHP and theme maintenance are required. |
| Shortcode or front-end-login plugin | Editors who want to build the page from WordPress’s editor | Fast setup and widget support, with plugin updates, compatibility, accessibility, redirect and error-handling behavior to review. |
Customize wp-login.php |
Sites that want to brand the standard WordPress login screen | Branding the default flow rather than moving it to a front-end page; the result remains dependent on the standard endpoint and available hooks. |
Create a front-end login page with wp_login_form()
WordPress describes wp_login_form() as a simple login form for use anywhere within WordPress. The function echoes its markup by default, so it can be called directly in a page template or template part.
1. Add a dedicated page template
Create a PHP file in your child theme, for example page-front-end-login.php. A child theme prevents a parent-theme update from overwriting your template.
<?php
/*
* Template Name: Front-End Login
*/
get_header();
?>
<main id="primary" class="site-main front-end-login">
<?php if ( ! is_user_logged_in() ) : ?>
<h1><?php echo esc_html( get_the_title() ); ?></h1>
<?php
wp_login_form( [
'echo' => true,
'redirect' => home_url( '/account/' ),
'remember' => true,
'required_username' => true,
'required_password' => true,
'label_username' => 'Username or email',
'label_password' => 'Password',
'label_log_in' => 'Log in',
] );
?>
<?php else : ?>
<p>You are already logged in.</p>
<p><a href="<?php echo esc_url( home_url( '/account/' ) ); ?>">Go to your account</a></p>
<?php endif; ?>
</main>
<?php get_footer();
The redirect value in this example is an absolute URL generated by home_url(). The API requires an absolute URL. Change /account/ to the destination that should appear after a successful login.

2. Assign the template to a WordPress page
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Pages → Add New and create a page such as “Log in”.
- In the page settings, open the Template selector and choose Front-End Login.
- Publish the page and open its public URL in a private browser window to test the logged-out view.
The default WordPress login endpoint remains wp-login.php. The custom page is an additional front-end entry point; it does not replace WordPress’s authentication process.
Put the form inside custom markup
Set echo to false when the form must be captured and placed inside your own wrapper or layout.

<?php

'echo' => false,
'redirect' => home_url( '/account/' ),
] );
if ( $form ) {
echo '<div class="login-card">' . $form . '</div>';
}
?>
WordPress returns the generated form HTML. Preserve that markup when outputting it; do not run the complete form through an escaping function that would display the tags as text.
Control the form’s labels and behavior
redirect: sets the destination after a successful login and must be an absolute URL. If omitted, WordPress uses the request URI as the default destination.remember: controls whether the “Remember Me” option is shown.required_usernameandrequired_password: add required attributes to the corresponding fields.label_username,label_password, andlabel_log_in: let you use wording that fits your audience, such as “Username or email”.- Field IDs and other arguments: use the function’s documented arguments when your CSS, scripts or accessibility checks depend on predictable IDs.
Test the form with an incorrect password, an empty field, keyboard-only navigation and a screen reader. Keep the labels meaningful, and make sure the focus state remains visible after you add custom CSS.

Add a login form to a sidebar or widget area
A native call in a page template does not automatically create a block or widget. There are two practical routes.
Use a maintained plugin
- Open Plugins → Add New Plugin and search for a maintained front-end-login plugin.
- Before installing, check its latest update, compatibility with your current WordPress version, support activity, accessibility information and redirect settings.
- Install and activate it, then follow its current documentation to create a login page or insert its shortcode.
- Place that shortcode in a page, post, sidebar, footer or block/widget area supported by your site.
The WP Login Form plugin documents adding its form to a post, page or sidebar with a shortcode and confirms widget and embedded-page use. Shortcode names, styling controls and redirect options can change between plugin versions, so copy the syntax shown by the installed plugin rather than relying on an old tutorial.

Create a small shortcode without a plugin
If you can add a small, site-specific snippet to a child theme or a functionality plugin, register a shortcode that returns the native form. Returning the string is important because shortcode callbacks should return content.
function site_frontend_login_shortcode() {
if ( is_user_logged_in() ) {
return '<p>You are already logged in.</p>';
}
return wp_login_form( [
'echo' => false,
'redirect' => home_url( '/account/' ),
'remember' => true,
] );
}
add_shortcode( 'site_login_form', 'site_frontend_login_shortcode' );
Insert [site_login_form] in a Shortcode block, a classic-editor widget or another area that accepts shortcodes. Keep this code in a child theme or functionality plugin so it is not lost when the visual theme changes.

Decide whether to customize wp-login.php instead
If your goal is only to add a logo, colors or a background to the standard login screen, customizing wp-login.php may be simpler than maintaining a separate public page. This preserves the default endpoint and flow. A front-end page is the better fit when the login needs to live inside your site’s account layout, navigation or widget system.
Test redirects, logged-in states and failures
- Visit the page while logged out and confirm the form is visible.
- Submit valid credentials and verify the absolute redirect reaches the intended account page.
- Submit an invalid password and confirm WordPress displays an understandable error without exposing sensitive information.
- Open the page while already logged in and decide whether to show an account link, a logout link or no form.
- Test the page on mobile widths and with keyboard navigation after applying your theme’s CSS.
- If a plugin is involved, retest after updates because its shortcode, redirect controls and widget integration are version-dependent.
Which method should you use?
Choose the native template when you have PHP and child-theme access and want the smallest dependency surface. Choose a maintained plugin when editors need to place the form through the dashboard or when a sidebar/widget placement is central to the design. Choose standard wp-login.php customization when you only need branded styling and do not need a separate front-end login route.
