For most modern laptops, adding CD capability is as simple as connecting an external USB CD/DVD drive. You usually do not need to open the laptop. Choose a model marked DVD±RW or DVD writer if you want to read and burn discs; a read-only drive cannot burn them. The steps below cover choosing a drive, connecting it, and using it for music and data on Windows or macOS.
Choose the right external drive
A portable USB optical drive is the practical option for most laptops. It may draw power from the USB connection and appear as a normal optical drive in the operating system. Check the product’s compatibility page before buying; connectors, power needs, and software support vary by model.

For ordinary music CDs, software discs, and data discs, a USB DVD±RW writer is usually the most versatile choice. Confirm that the listing says “writer,” “burner,” or “RW” if burning matters. A standard DVD writer cannot read Blu-ray discs; Blu-ray also may require separate playback software.

Match the drive to your laptop
- Check the port: USB-A is the larger rectangular connector; USB-C is the smaller reversible oval connector. Choose a matching cable or use a compatible adapter.
- Plan for power: connect directly to the laptop when possible. An unpowered hub, dock, or monitor may not provide stable power. Some drives have a second USB plug for additional power; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check what you need to do: reading files, playing a CD, ripping tracks, burning a disc, and playing DVD-Video are separate capabilities that involve different hardware and software.
- Check extras only if relevant: confirm included software, operating-system support, and M-DISC support if you plan to use that media. M-DISC is marketed for archival durability, but it does not replace keeping multiple backups.
Manufacturers offer different connector and compatibility options. For examples, see ASUS ZenDrive product information and Dell’s DW316 specifications. Maximum write speeds, such as the LG GP65NB60’s specified maximum of 8× for DVD±R and 24× for CD, are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of real-world speed; media, software, and drive conditions affect results. Connect the drive and confirm the laptop sees it
- Check that the laptop has an available USB-A or USB-C port. If the drive’s plug does not match, use a suitable adapter or choose a matching model.
- Turn on the laptop and connect the drive directly to a USB port. If the drive has two USB plugs, connect both as its manual directs.
- Wait several seconds, then press the drive’s eject button and place the disc label-side up.
- On Windows: open File Explorer, select This PC, and look for a DVD/CD drive, often assigned a letter such as D: or E:. Open it to view a data disc.
- On macOS: check Finder’s sidebar under Locations for the disc. If it does not appear, open System Information and choose Disc Burning under Hardware to check whether the drive is listed.
Standard USB optical drives are often detected automatically, but hubs, adapters, power, and particular drive models can affect recognition. Microsoft’s Windows 11 connection guidance is at Microsoft Q&A. Apple documents external-drive use and checking burning capabilities in its Mac guide. For Apple’s USB SuperDrive, Apple advises connecting it directly to the Mac if it does not respond through a hub or display: Apple USB SuperDrive support.
Play or copy music CDs
Play an audio CD
Insert the disc and open a compatible music application. If no application opens automatically, launch one and select the optical drive. On macOS, the disc may appear in Finder or a compatible music app. A drive being recognized does not guarantee that every music application can play or import discs.

Rip tracks on Windows
Ripping means copying tracks from an audio CD into files stored on the laptop. In classic Windows Media Player, Microsoft documents this workflow:

- Select Rip CD. To choose an available format or quality, open Rip settings.
- Clear any tracks you do not want to copy, then start ripping.
- Check the Music folder or the save location configured in the player, and play a resulting file before importing a whole collection.
Microsoft lists WMA, WAV, and MP3 as formats available in Windows Media Player; available settings can vary. MP3 is broadly compatible and compact but uses lossy compression. WAV is uncompressed and large. WMA can suit Microsoft-focused use but may be less compatible elsewhere. For lossless archival files, use software that supports a lossless format. Copyright rules differ by jurisdiction, and owning a disc does not establish a universal right to copy it. Do not bypass copy protection or distribute copied music. Microsoft warns that unauthorized duplication of copyrighted material may violate U.S. or other applicable laws. Keep original discs where appropriate, and maintain separate backups of files you cannot afford to lose.
Burn an audio CD or data disc
Burning requires a writer, not a read-only drive. An audio CD is intended for conventional CD players and holds up to about 80 minutes of music. A data CD stores files and holds roughly 700 MB; whether another device can play audio files on it depends on that device’s supported formats. A single-layer data DVD holds about 4.7 GB. These are typical capacities documented by Microsoft, not guarantees for every disc or usable capacity.

Burn with classic Windows Media Player
- Open Windows Media Player and select the Burn tab.
- Open Burn options and choose Audio CD or Data CD or DVD.
- Insert a compatible blank disc and select the external drive if more than one drive is available.
- Add music or files to the burn list and select Start burn.
Windows 11 installations may show different media apps and menus from the classic Windows Media Player interface. If the Burn tab is absent, use a disc-burning application that supports your task, or the legacy component where it is available. For broad compatibility with older CD players, CD-R media is generally a sensible choice; check the target player’s support for rewritable discs before using CD-RW.

- Insert a blank disc.
- In Finder, create a burn folder or select the files you want on the disc.
- Use Finder’s Burn command, select the external drive, and follow the prompts.
Apple explains external-drive burning in its Mac guide. The available burn options depend on the Mac, drive, disc, and software.

Read data DVDs, play DVD movies, and handle region limits
A data DVD containing files should generally open in File Explorer or Finder if the disc is readable. A DVD movie is different: DVD-Video needs a compatible player application and decoder. Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations generally do not include DVD movie playback by default, even if they detect the drive and read data discs. Microsoft’s support community explains this distinction here. If you install a player such as VLC, get it from the official VLC site, not a third-party download portal.
Some commercial DVDs are region-coded, so a disc and drive may not have compatible region settings. Region changes can be limited by the drive or operating system; do not attempt to circumvent region restrictions. Blu-ray region handling is separate, and Blu-ray playback requires a Blu-ray-capable drive rather than an ordinary DVD writer.
Troubleshoot common problems

On Windows, if the drive remains missing, open Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, check for an error icon, and choose Scan for hardware changes or restart. On macOS, use System Information’s Disc Burning section to see whether the drive is listed. Test the drive on another computer if possible, then consult the manufacturer’s support page. Avoid generic driver-updater utilities; most standard USB optical drives do not need them.
Can you install a drive inside the laptop instead?
Only some older, serviceable laptops have a removable optical-drive bay. A compatible retrofit may require the right drive connector, mounting bracket or caddy, bezel, and firmware support. Thin modern laptops usually lack the bay and internal connector, and opening the chassis can risk damage or affect warranty coverage. Do not follow generic disassembly instructions: check the service manual for your exact laptop model before buying parts. An internal replacement makes most sense when a compatible optical drive is already installed and needs replacing.
When another option makes more sense
- One-time file transfer: borrow a drive or use another computer with an optical drive, then copy the files to a USB flash drive or external SSD.
- Regular access to CDs and DVDs: use an external USB DVD writer so you can move it between computers.
- Blu-ray media: choose a dedicated Blu-ray drive and check playback software support.
- Future listening without discs: streaming may be convenient, but it does not retrieve files from a physical disc you already own.
For most readers, a portable external DVD±RW drive with the right USB connector covers CD playback and ripping, DVD data access, and disc burning without the difficulty of an internal retrofit.
