The steps depend on your active WordPress theme: use the Site Editor to add a Button block inside the header’s Navigation block on a block theme, or add a Custom Link through Appearance > Menus on a classic theme and style it if needed. First check which editing controls your dashboard provides.
Choose the right WordPress editing route
In your dashboard, check the options under Appearance. The Site Editor is available when a block theme is active; WordPress.org states that it is only available with an installed and activated block theme in its Site Editor documentation. Classic themes generally provide a Menus screen, while hybrid themes and plugins may expose overlapping controls.

Add a button in a block theme
- Open the Site Editor. Go to Appearance > Editor. If Editor is missing, check whether a block theme is active.
- Open the header navigation. In the Editor, open the Header template part and select its Navigation block. WordPress explains in its Navigation block documentation that creating a menu alone does not put it on the site; a Navigation block in a template part such as the Header must be connected to it.
- Insert the button. Add a Button block within the Navigation block. Enter a concise label, then set the destination using the block’s link control. The available controls and styles are described in WordPress’s Buttons block documentation.
- Adjust its appearance. Use the controls your theme exposes for color, typography, spacing, border, and shape. Keep the label legible and check that the button fits beside the other navigation items, including at narrow screen widths.
- Save and preview. Save the change and inspect the front end. If a separately created menu is not displayed, make sure the Navigation block is assigned to that saved menu.
Add a button-style link in a classic or hybrid theme
- Open the menu screen. Go to Appearance > Menus, if that option is available. WordPress notes that classic menus may be available with classic or hybrid themes, or through plugins that enable them.
- Select the header menu. Choose the menu assigned to the header or primary navigation. If the desired item is missing, add a Custom Link, enter its URL and visible label, then add it to the menu.
- Expose the CSS class field. Open Screen Options and enable CSS Classes if the field is hidden. Expand the target menu item and enter a descriptive class. WordPress documents this menu-item option in its Appearance Menus Screen guide.
- Apply styling through the theme’s supported method. Use the CSS mechanism provided or recommended by your theme to style that menu item like a button. There is no universal selector or CSS location: both depend on the theme and its version. Avoid assuming a snippet for another theme will apply correctly.
- Save and inspect. Save the menu, then preview the front end at desktop and narrow widths. Confirm the link goes to the intended destination and remains usable in the responsive menu.
If the button or link does not appear
- Block theme: confirm the change was saved and that the header’s Navigation block is connected to the menu you edited.
- Classic or hybrid theme: confirm you saved the right menu and assigned it to the header or primary display location offered by the theme.
- Still seeing the old version: if the saved change is correct in WordPress but the front end has not updated, clear the browser or site-plugin cache and check again.
WordPress.org’s navigation guidance recommends saving and previewing navigation changes. The exact header controls, styling options, and mobile layout remain theme-dependent.
