Choose an outline for annotations, extra canvas for clean breathing room, or a frame for a quick style. The right method depends on whether the screenshot’s dimensions must stay the same and how precisely you need to control the result.
Choose the border style before editing
These methods produce different results, even if they can all look like a border:
- Outline: A line sits on top of the existing image. It can mark the screenshot’s edge or call attention to a region, but may cover pixels and does not add margin.
- Outer border or margin: Extra canvas surrounds the screenshot. This preserves the original pixels and increases the final image dimensions.
- Decorative frame: A preset or designed effect overlays the image. It is fast, but can cover details; in Snapseed, it does not change the final image dimensions or resolution.
For a crisp UI screenshot with a clearly controlled outer margin, use a canvas-based editor such as Photoshop. For an unchanged image size, use Snapseed. For a simple annotation, use Markup on a Mac.
Add an outer border in Photoshop
Photoshop’s canvas-size method adds space around the screenshot rather than drawing over its contents. Adobe’s tutorial uses Image > Canvas Size, the Relative option, and a Solid Color fill layer. Adobe’s Canvas Size instructions provide the relevant controls.

- Open the screenshot in Photoshop. If the image has multiple layers, identify the screenshot layer and keep it above the border fill.
- Choose Image > Canvas Size.
- Enable Relative. Enter the additional width and height you want in pixels. To distribute the new canvas evenly on all sides, use twice the desired border width for both the added width and height. For example, adding 40 pixels to each dimension gives 20 pixels on each side when the image is centered.
- Confirm the canvas change. If the dialog provides an anchor control, keep the image centered for an even border; move the anchor if you want the extra space on specific sides.
- Add a Solid Color fill layer and place it behind the screenshot. Choose a color for the new canvas area.
- Export a copy. PNG is a sensible choice when sharp interface text or transparency matters; retain the original file if you may need to revise the border later.
Canvas Size increases the document area; it does not scale the screenshot itself. Check the final pixel dimensions before using the result in a fixed-size layout. If you want only a line around the screenshot without extra margin, use a shape or stroke instead, recognizing that an inside or centered stroke may obscure edge pixels.
Apply a preset frame in Adobe Express Photos on Windows
Adobe Express Photos offers frame presets for a quick visual treatment. The workflow below is for its Windows Photos interface; labels and availability can differ across apps and versions. Adobe’s frame guidance covers the effect.
- Open Adobe Express Photos and choose Open image or Capture screenshot.
- Select Edit in the top panel.
- Choose Effects, then View all.
- Choose a style under Frames, such as Basic, Edges, or Classic Frames.
- Choose Save to apply the edit, or Save > Save as to keep the original unchanged.
Presets are convenient when you want a frame without measuring a margin. Inspect the edges before saving: a decorative effect may cover content or change the screenshot’s appearance more than a plain border would.

Add a frame in Snapseed on iOS or Android
Snapseed applies its frame over the image. Google states that “Frames apply on top of the image so that they do not alter the final image size or resolution.” That makes it useful when output dimensions must remain unchanged, but the frame may cover image details. See Google’s Snapseed Frames help.

- Open the screenshot in Snapseed.
- Choose Frames and tap a style.
- Tap the selected frame thumbnail again to view variations.
- Swipe horizontally on the image to adjust the border size.
- Inspect the screenshot edges, then export the result.
Because the frame overlays the image rather than adding canvas, do not use this method when every original edge pixel must remain unobscured. For a larger outside margin, choose a canvas-based editor instead.
Draw a simple outline with Photos Markup on Mac
Mac Photos Markup is suited to a quick rectangle outline, not to creating a controlled outer margin. Apple’s Photos editing guidance explains working with edits in Photos.

- Open the screenshot in Photos and click Edit.
- Click Extensions, then choose Markup.
- Draw a rectangle around the screenshot.
- Use Line Style to adjust thickness and Border Color to choose a color.
- Click Save Changes.
Position the rectangle carefully: a line placed inside the image can overlap its edge content. Markup gives you a straightforward outline, but less control over adding a measured margin outside the screenshot than a canvas editor.
Use a design tool or add borders in code
Sketch for placement and per-side control
Sketch supports multiple borders with controls for thickness, color, blur, and placement Inside, Center, or Outside the layer outline. Rectangular image layers can also use per-side settings, useful for an asymmetric treatment such as a bottom divider. See Sketch’s borders documentation. Choose an outside placement when you want a border beyond the image edge; use inside placement only when covering edge pixels is acceptable.

Jetpack Compose for Android interfaces
If you are building an Android app rather than editing a finished screenshot, Jetpack Compose can draw a border around an image with Modifier.border() and Modifier.clip(). The official example uses a 4.dp border and a shape. See Android’s image customization guidance.

Use a restrained line for a plain boundary, or a stronger color when the border is meant to direct attention. Keep labels and interface text readable, and zoom in to check that the line does not hide small controls. If the screenshot is being placed on a page with a fixed width or aspect ratio, account for any new canvas before exporting.
Make the border repeatable for future captures
If you routinely capture screenshots for documentation or reports, set border treatment in the capture or image profile workflow rather than editing every file manually. MadCap documents separate image and profile editors for this kind of repeatable setup. See MadCap’s image profile documentation. For a one-off screenshot, an editor is usually simpler. For a recurring workflow, check whether the capture profile can apply a border on export and whether it changes image dimensions or overlays the original edges.

Common problems and fixes
- The result has no visible border: In Photoshop, confirm the Solid Color fill layer is behind the screenshot and that the canvas was enlarged. With an outline, check that the line color contrasts with the image.
- The border covers important content: A frame or inside stroke overlays the screenshot. Reduce its thickness, choose an outside placement where available, or add canvas instead.
- The output dimensions changed: That is expected when you increase canvas size in Photoshop. Snapseed frames, by contrast, overlay the image and Google says they do not change its final dimensions or resolution. Choose based on the required output size.
- The border is uneven: In Photoshop, use centered anchoring and equal added width and height. In tools with per-side controls, inspect each side separately.
- The border looks soft around text: Export a copy as PNG when crisp UI text matters, and avoid resizing the screenshot unnecessarily during export.
- The editor controls do not match these steps: Check the application and platform. The Adobe Express steps here apply to Adobe Express Photos on Windows; app labels and availability can change.
