To add a border around one embedded video, give its Embed block a custom CSS class and style that class’s iframe. For a local video, style the core Video block instead. If you prefer not to write CSS, wrap the embed in a Group block and use its border controls when your theme provides them.
Choose the right method for your video

Add a border to a YouTube or Vimeo Embed block
- In the post or page editor, add an Embed block, paste the provider’s video URL, and select Embed. WordPress describes this workflow in its Embed block documentation.
- Select the Embed block. In its settings, open Advanced and enter
video-with-borderin Additional CSS Class(es). - Add this CSS to the site’s Additional CSS panel or the active theme’s stylesheet:
.video-with-border iframe { width: 100%; border: 3px solid #222; box-sizing: border-box; }
The class scopes the rule to that block rather than every video on the site. Change 3px or #222 to suit the design. WordPress’s Styles interface includes site-wide Additional CSS, documented as built in since WordPress 6.2; its location and available controls can vary by theme and editor setup. Use visual border controls instead of CSS
- Insert a Group block, then place the Embed block inside it.
- Select the Group and open its Styles settings.
- If the theme exposes border controls, choose the border color, width, and radius. The controls may let you apply the same setting to every side or configure sides separately.
This method is useful when you want to make the change in the editor’s visual controls. It styles the Group, not just the iframe, so check the result for unwanted spacing or a border around extra content.

Style a locally uploaded or self-hosted video
For a video inserted with WordPress’s Video block, target the core video element rather than an iframe:

}The Video block can use an upload, the Media Library, or a URL. A supported YouTube URL can transform into a YouTube embed block, which is why the Embed-block method is more appropriate for that case. Details are in the Video block documentation and the core Video block reference.
Use a Custom HTML block for an unsupported provider
When WordPress does not offer a dedicated block for the service, add a Custom HTML block and use the provider’s iframe embed code. A wrapper lets you put the border around the full responsive video area:

}Replace VIDEO_ID with the provider’s actual video identifier and use the provider’s embed URL and any required attributes. WordPress developer guidance notes that unsupported services require Custom HTML and that embed code nearly always contains an iframe; see Customize WordPress embeds to match your theme. WordPress may sanitize iframe markup for users who lack the capability to add unfiltered HTML. If the iframe vanishes after saving, use a supported provider block or ask an administrator to check your permissions. See the Custom HTML block documentation.
Keep the border responsive and usable
- For a custom iframe wrapper,
width: 100%andaspect-ratio: 16 / 9let the video area scale with its available width while retaining a widescreen shape. Adjust the ratio if the video uses a different format. - Give the iframe a meaningful
titleso assistive-technology users can identify its content. - Keep the provider’s controls available, and check keyboard focus and captions on the published page.
- For rounded corners, apply
border-radiusto the element carrying the border. If the iframe’s corners remain visible outside a rounded wrapper, addoverflow: hiddento that wrapper.
Fix common border problems
The border does not appear
Confirm that the custom class is on the Embed block’s wrapper, not merely typed into the post content. Inspect the rendered page to see whether the iframe sits inside another provider wrapper. If it does, apply the border to the wrapper that surrounds the visible video. Increase selector specificity only if another rule is overriding yours.

The border appears in the editor but not on the live page
Check that the CSS is saved in site-wide Additional CSS or the active theme stylesheet, rather than only in an editor preview or temporary location. Clear site or browser caches and reload the published page.
The iframe disappears after saving
Your account may not have permission to save unfiltered HTML. Use a supported Embed block if available, or ask a site administrator to review the account’s capability.

The corners or sizing look wrong
Put the border on the outer wrapper when the iframe has provider-generated wrappers or sizing rules. Apply the radius to that same bordered element; use overflow: hidden on the wrapper if the video must be clipped to rounded corners.
