To activate Malwarebytes in Windows, open the app, select My subscription (or Activate now during setup), choose Activate subscription, and sign in with the Malwarebytes account used for the purchase. Enter the email verification code when prompted, then return to the dashboard. If you have a license key or MB code instead, choose the corresponding activation option.
Malwarebytes previously used the name Premium for paid Windows protection. Current releases generally refer to your subscription or plan, so you may not see the word “Premium” even after successful activation.
Choose the activation method
- Malwarebytes is already installed
- You are installing it for the first time
- You have a license key
- You have an MB code
- You see an activation error
You need Malwarebytes for Windows, internet access, the email address associated with the purchase or account, and either an active subscription, license key, or MB code. A legacy purchase may also require a license ID. First-time installation can require Windows administrator permission.

Activate an existing Malwarebytes installation
In current versions, use this account-based path:
- Open Malwarebytes.
- On the dashboard, select My subscription.
- Open the three-dot menu on the subscription card.
- Select Activate subscription.
- Choose Sign in.
- Enter the email address and password for the Malwarebytes account that owns the subscription.
- Retrieve the one-time verification code sent to your email and enter it in Malwarebytes.
- Complete any remaining onboarding prompt and select Continue to Dashboard.
Malwarebytes may label the controls differently depending on the application release or whether setup is still in progress. Look for My subscription, Activate subscription, Activate now, or a subscription card.

Activate during first installation
- Download Malwarebytes for Windows from Malwarebytes’ official website.
- Open
MBsetup.exe. - Approve the Windows permission prompt if it appears.
- Select Install.
- Choose Personal or Business.
- Dismiss optional product prompts if you do not want them.
- When Malwarebytes opens, select Activate now.
- Choose Sign in, Enter license key, or Enter MB code.
- If you sign in, enter the emailed verification code.
- Wait for the successful activation message, then select Continue to Dashboard.
The exact options can vary with the product version and entitlement. Malwarebytes documents the current Windows installer flow in its installation instructions.

Current key-only activation
If Malwarebytes gives you a key in a format such as XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX:
- Open Malwarebytes and select Activate subscription or the equivalent activation control.
- Choose Enter license key.
- Enter the key without extra spaces or line breaks.
- Select Activate when the button becomes available.
Check characters carefully, especially visually similar characters such as O and 0, or I and 1. Do not post a license key or license ID in a public forum.

Legacy key plus license ID
Some older purchases use a different key format, such as XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX, together with a license ID. Do not assume that every key uses the same fields. If the app requests both values, enter the license key and its matching license ID. Malwarebytes’ version 4 guide describes these older activation controls and formats.
Register a retail or reseller key to your account
A license purchased from a physical retailer, reseller, or another website may not automatically appear in your Malwarebytes account. Link it first:
- Sign in to your Malwarebytes account.
- Open Manage Subscription.
- Scroll to the bottom of your current subscriptions.
- Select Link an existing subscription or Add a subscription.
- Enter the license key.
- If requested, select the license-ID option and enter the license ID.
- Select Register.
Then sign in to Malwarebytes for Windows with that same account. Follow Malwarebytes’ instructions for adding a license to an account.
Find a lost or missing key
If you bought directly through the Malwarebytes online store, license details may be available in your account. A physical retail purchase normally includes a subscription card. Malwarebytes states that a lost physical card cannot normally be retrieved through its standard process if the key was never added to an account. See Malwarebytes’ license-key recovery guidance.
Activate with an MB code
An MB code is different from a traditional license key. It can be generated through a Malwarebytes account or a supported Malwarebytes mobile security app.

- Generate or retrieve the MB code from the account or supported mobile app.
- In Windows setup or the activation screen, select Enter MB code.
- Enter the code and submit it.
- Complete any verification or confirmation prompt, then return to the dashboard.
Confirm that activation worked
Look for a successful activation message and confirm that Malwarebytes returns to, or lets you continue to, the dashboard. Then open My subscription and check that the expected subscription or plan is shown.

Real-time protection, scheduled scans, and other paid controls should be available when included with your plan and application version. Older Malwarebytes for Windows version 4 documentation shows Premium in the upper-left of the dashboard after activation. That label is not guaranteed in current releases, which may show a plan name such as Standard, Plus, or Ultimate instead.
Fix common Malwarebytes activation errors
| Error or symptom | What it usually means | What to do |

| MB403102 | The key may be expired, mismatched, or without a valid entitlement. | Check the key, account, and subscription status. |
| MB403103 | The key does not match the product being activated. | Confirm that the key belongs to Malwarebytes for Windows and to the correct product generation. |
| MB403105 | The key was refunded. | Contact the seller or Malwarebytes support about the purchase. |
| MB403100 or MB403101 | There is a problem with the key or installation token. | Retry carefully, record the exact message, and contact support if it persists. |
| MB405108 | The email address or password is incorrect. | Use the purchase email and reset the password if needed. |
| MB405100 | There have been too many sign-in attempts. | Stop retrying and wait at least 24 hours before trying again, as Malwarebytes advises. |
For any failure, record the exact error code and wording before contacting support. Malwarebytes maintains an error-message reference.
When the verification email does not arrive
- Search spam, junk, promotions, and quarantine folders.
- Confirm that you entered the account or purchase email, not simply the address currently used on the PC.
- Wait briefly and request another code.
- Avoid repeated failed login attempts, which can trigger a temporary limit.
- Contact Malwarebytes support if you still cannot access the account.

To activate another PC, use the same Malwarebytes account if your plan includes an available device seat. You can manage associated devices and subscriptions from Manage Subscription. If an old computer still occupies a seat, deactivate it through account management rather than assuming that uninstalling the app freed the slot. Activation does not change billing. Subscriptions bought through the Malwarebytes online store have auto-renewal enabled by default, according to Malwarebytes. To turn it off, manage auto-renewal in your Malwarebytes account; the subscription remains active until its expiration date. Purchases made through Apple, Google, or another seller may follow that seller’s billing controls.
Version 4 versus current Malwarebytes
Many older guides say to click Activate Subscription in a particular dashboard location and expect the word Premium after activation. Those instructions apply to Malwarebytes for Windows version 4. Current releases use account-based subscription language and may place activation under My subscription. If an old guide does not match your screen, follow the current account or installer path instead of repeatedly searching for the legacy button.
Do you need a paid Malwarebytes subscription?
A paid subscription is intended for features such as real-time protection and scheduled scans when those features are included in the plan and version you use. If you only want occasional on-demand malware scanning, the free Malwarebytes scanner may be sufficient for that narrower use case.
Windows also includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Microsoft describes it as built-in Windows protection, but the exact behavior of Defender when Malwarebytes is installed depends on the Windows and third-party security configuration. Do not assume that Malwarebytes always disables Defender or that both products always operate in the same mode; check Windows Security and Malwarebytes after installation.
Choose a higher Malwarebytes plan only if you need its additional devices or features, such as VPN or identity-protection services. An activation error by itself is not a reason to buy a new plan.
