Open Gmail.com on the other computer, sign in with the Google Account email address or phone number and password, then complete any security check Google requests. You do not need your original computer or a separate Gmail installation. On a shared computer, use a private window, do not save your password, and sign out before you leave.
Sign in to Gmail on another computer
- Open a web browser and go to gmail.com. Check the address bar before entering credentials.
- Enter the email address or phone number associated with your Google Account, then select Next.
- Enter your password and continue.
- If Google requests verification, complete one of the methods offered.
- When your inbox opens, use Gmail normally. Sign out when finished, especially if the computer belongs to someone else.
Gmail messages are tied to your Google Account, not just to the computer where you first set up Gmail. Signing in from another browser creates a session on that computer. A new device, browser, location, or private window may prompt an additional security check; private browsing does not bypass the password or verification requirement. If Google asks you to verify it’s you
Google chooses a challenge based on the account and sign-in circumstances, so you may not see the same option each time. Possible methods include a Google prompt on a phone where you’re signed in, a text or call code, an authenticator-app code, a passkey, a security key, a QR-code step, or an eight-digit backup code. A passkey uses a device’s screen lock—such as a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN—and may replace the usual password-and-second-step flow when available. Not every account or computer offers every method. See Google’s list of 2-Step Verification methods.
If you do not have your phone, choose Try another way on the verification screen, if shown, and use an available alternative such as a backup code, configured authenticator app, passkey, security key, or recovery email. Backup codes are intended for situations when you cannot access your phone; keep them somewhere secure and separate from the device. Do not turn off 2-Step Verification just to get past a sign-in challenge: use an alternate method or account recovery instead. Google explains backup options for 2-Step Verification.

If none of the offered methods work, use Google Account Recovery. Recovery is not guaranteed. Google recommends trying from a device, browser, and location you commonly use, and entering the most recent password you remember. A familiar home computer may be a better recovery choice than repeatedly trying from an unfamiliar public machine. Google’s recovery guidance also says to enter passwords and verification codes only at accounts.google.com.
Use a public, work, hotel, or borrowed computer safely
A library, hotel business-center, school, workplace, or friend’s computer is not under your control. If you must use one:

- Open a private or incognito window if the browser offers it. This can reduce locally retained browsing data and session cookies after you close the window, but it does not protect you from malware, keyloggers, screen recording, or a fake sign-in page.
- Do not save the password, allow browser password storage, or sync your Google Account to the browser.
- If Google asks Don’t ask again on this computer, do not select it on a shared device. That choice is for a private computer you regularly control.
- Avoid downloading attachments or leaving files in the Downloads folder. Do not plug in an unknown USB device to retrieve a verification code.
- Sign out of Gmail before leaving, then close the private window. Closing a regular browser window alone may leave an active session if cookies persist or the browser restores the session.
- If the computer looks compromised, has suspicious extensions, or shows an unusual sign-in page, stop and use another device.
Private browsing is a privacy precaution, not a complete security guarantee; Google may also treat a private window as a separate session and ask for verification. Cookies being disabled or cleared can cause repeated verification or prevent a computer from being remembered. On a public computer, repeated verification is safer than relaxing privacy settings or leaving the account signed in. Sign out when you finish
- In Gmail, select your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Select Sign out. If several Google Accounts are signed in, choose Sign out of all accounts if appropriate.
- On a private window, close the window after signing out.
Signing out ends the browser session; it is different from removing an account from the browser’s account list. On a shared computer, avoid adding your account to the regular browser profile in the first place. For Gmail’s sign-out steps, see Google’s sign-out help.

Forgot to sign out? End the session remotely
From a device you trust, open your Google Account and go to Security & sign-in. Under Your devices, select Manage all devices, choose the computer or session, and select Sign out. If you see multiple sessions with the same device name, review and sign out of each relevant one individually.
Several entries do not automatically mean several physical computers: different browsers, apps, services, or private windows can create separate sessions. If a computer was untrusted, credentials may have been saved, or activity looks suspicious, change your password and follow Google’s compromised-account steps. If you forgot the password or suspect someone accessed the account
If you know the password but cannot pass a security check, use Try another way and an available verification method; do not keep guessing. If you forgot the password, use Account Recovery, provide the most recent password you remember, and answer as many questions as you can. Use a familiar device, browser, and location when possible. If you think the account was compromised, use Google’s compromised-account process rather than relying only on a password reset. Never give a password or verification code to someone claiming they can unlock the account.

Already signed in to a different Google Account?
Open Gmail, select the profile picture or initial at the top right, then choose Add account and sign in to the other account. Switch between signed-in accounts from the same menu. Check which account is active before sending mail or opening files. On a shared computer, a private window is preferable to adding an account to the ordinary browser profile, where it may remain listed or signed in. A work or school Google Workspace account may have administrator-managed sign-in rules or verification methods. If the usual options are unavailable or access is blocked by an organization policy, contact your administrator; personal Gmail instructions may not fully apply.
