Do not scrape Tripadvisor’s web pages. Tripadvisor’s Content API Master Terms prohibit collecting licensed content from Tripadvisor sites with a robot, spider, scraper or other automated method unless Tripadvisor has expressly approved it. The supported route is an approved, consumer-facing integration using Tripadvisor’s current partner platform, Terra. Confirm that your application is eligible, obtain the package and add-ons your account needs, and then use documented location and review endpoints under the display, attribution, caching and budget rules in your agreement.

What “scraping Tripadvisor with an API” actually means

An API integration is not a workaround for Tripadvisor’s site restrictions. It is a licensed data connection that Tripadvisor approves for a specific account and use case. The Content API FAQ describes the product as intended for consumer-facing (B2C) websites and apps. Academic research and B2B reputation-management projects are identified as ineligible, and proposed integrations must be submitted for approval so Tripadvisor can check display requirements.

Before writing code, describe your product, audience, where Tripadvisor content will appear, and how users will interact with it. A site or app that is not live may not qualify under the FAQ. Read the current Content API Master Terms and your account agreement; approval for one account does not grant permission to collect content for another project.

Choose the current platform and check migration status

For new work, investigate Tripadvisor’s Terra partner platform and the package available to your account. Terra’s Discover offering is described as providing common factual location content and a limited amount of user-generated content, with lower throughput and quotas than some packages. Endpoint availability, fields, rate limits and daily quotas depend on the package and add-ons you purchase.

The older JSON Partner API documentation is in maintenance mode and says it is expected to be deprecated in the third quarter of 2026, without giving an exact sunset date. Treat that as a migration notice, not proof that an existing integration has already stopped working. Inventory any JSON Partner API calls you operate, ask Tripadvisor which Terra equivalents your account can use, and schedule a controlled migration before the stated quarter.

Eligibility, approval and commercial controls

  • Use case: consumer-facing websites and apps are the documented target. Academic research and B2B reputation-management uses are not eligible according to the FAQ.
  • Approval: submit the proposed integration for review. Approval can include requirements for how content is displayed and linked.
  • Package access: credentials do not automatically unlock every endpoint. Terra ties endpoint coverage to packages and add-ons.
  • Budgets: the Content API product page says signup requires billing details, describes the first 5,000 calls each month as free after signup, and requires a maximum daily budget. These are live commercial terms; verify them in your account before relying on them.
  • Attribution: the product page says Locations API content requires Tripadvisor attribution. Follow the exact current attribution and display instructions supplied with your approval.

The normal data flow: location search, then reviews

A representative Terra workflow has two stages. First, call Search Locations with a name or address. The response is paginated and restricted to locations your customer account is licensed to access. Select the appropriate Tripadvisor location ID from the results. Second, pass that ID to Location Reviews. The reviews documentation describes filters including minimum rating, trip type, publication date, sort order and language; the fields and permitted values depend on your package.

  1. Confirm access: in the Terra dashboard, verify that Search Locations and Location Reviews are enabled for your package and note the current quota and rate-limit values.
  2. Search: submit the user’s location query. Store the returned Tripadvisor location ID, not a name-only guess.
  3. Paginate: follow the API’s documented next-page mechanism until you have enough licensed results. Put a hard page limit in your job to prevent accidental runaway calls.
  4. Retrieve reviews: request reviews for the selected location ID, applying only filters supported by your package.
  5. Render compliantly: show required attribution, links and any other display elements exactly as Tripadvisor specifies. Do not assume that technically returned fields may be republished, transformed or retained indefinitely.
  6. Monitor: record status codes, request identifiers, quota headers and billing information without logging API keys or review text unnecessarily.

Implementation pattern with a configurable endpoint

Tripadvisor changes endpoint paths and authentication details by platform and account. The following Python example is deliberately configured through environment variables rather than inventing a URL that may not match your Terra contract. Set TRIPADVISOR_SEARCH_URL, TRIPADVISOR_REVIEWS_URL and TRIPADVISOR_API_KEY to the values shown in your current Terra documentation or dashboard.

import os, time, requests

API_KEY = os.environ["TRIPADVISOR_API_KEY"]
SEARCH_URL = os.environ["TRIPADVISOR_SEARCH_URL"]
REVIEWS_URL = os.environ["TRIPADVISOR_REVIEWS_URL"]

session = requests.Session()
session.headers.update({"Authorization": f"Bearer {API_KEY}",
                         "Accept": "application/json"})

def get_json(url, params):
    response = session.get(url, params=params, timeout=30)
    if response.status_code == 429:
        retry_after = int(response.headers.get("Retry-After", "10"))
        time.sleep(min(retry_after, 60))
        response = session.get(url, params=params, timeout=30)
    response.raise_for_status()
    return response.json()

def find_location(query, page_size=20):
    data = get_json(SEARCH_URL, {"query": query, "page_size": page_size})
    return data

def get_reviews(location_id, **filters):
    params = {"location_id": location_id, **filters}
    return get_json(REVIEWS_URL, params)

locations = find_location("Eiffel Tower, Paris")
# Read the location ID and the documented next-page field from your Terra schema.
print(locations)
# Example filters only; use names and values enabled for your package.
# reviews = get_reviews("YOUR_RETURNED_LOCATION_ID", minimum_rating=4,
#                       language="en", sort="newest")

The code handles a single 429 with a bounded delay. In production, use exponential backoff with jitter, honor the server’s retry guidance, and stop after a finite number of attempts. Do not run tight immediate retries.

cURL request shape

curl --fail --silent --show-error
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TRIPADVISOR_API_KEY"
  -H "Accept: application/json"
  --get "$TRIPADVISOR_SEARCH_URL"
  --data-urlencode "query=Eiffel Tower, Paris"
  --data-urlencode "page_size=20"

Node.js request shape

const searchUrl = process.env.TRIPADVISOR_SEARCH_URL;
const key = process.env.TRIPADVISOR_API_KEY;
const url = new URL(searchUrl);
url.searchParams.set('query', 'Eiffel Tower, Paris');
url.searchParams.set('page_size', '20');

const res = await fetch(url, {
  headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${key}`, Accept: 'application/json' }
});
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Tripadvisor API returned ${res.status}`);
const locations = await res.json();
console.log(locations);

Replace parameter names only with those documented for your Terra package. The API’s schema, authentication method and pagination field are account-specific; copying a field from an unrelated example can produce empty results or a validation error.

Pagination, filtering and data handling

Pagination

Search results are paginated. Persist the continuation token or next-page value exactly as returned, and deduplicate location IDs if you combine pages. Set limits based on the user’s task rather than downloading every page by default.

Review filters

Use documented filters for minimum rating, trip type, publication date, sort order and language when your package supports them. Validate dates and enum values before sending requests. A filter that is visible in documentation may still require an add-on, so treat a permission or validation response as an account-configuration issue, not a reason to bypass the API.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage and presentation

Store only what your agreement permits. Apply retention and caching periods from the current terms, preserve required attribution, and keep a link to the Tripadvisor listing where required. Do not rewrite review wording, combine it with unrelated sentiment data, or expose raw API responses as a public mirror unless your approved display rules explicitly allow that use.

Rate limits, quotas and cost planning

Terra publishes rate and daily quota limits, and returns HTTP 429 when a limit is exceeded. Check the live dashboard and account agreement before estimating capacity; a key does not imply unlimited calls. Model your workload as searches plus review requests, multiplied by pagination and refresh frequency. Cache only when the applicable policy permits it, and favor user-triggered refreshes over repeated background polling.

Set a daily budget lower than the maximum you can afford while developing. Alert before the limit is reached, separate staging credentials from production credentials, and record usage by endpoint. The first-5,000-calls-per-month allowance described on the product page is a current commercial statement that can change, so verify it at signup and again before launch.

Common failures and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
401 or 403 Invalid credential, inactive account, or endpoint not included in the package Check the dashboard, rotate the key, and confirm package/add-on access with Tripadvisor.
429 Rate or daily quota exceeded Stop immediate retries, honor Retry-After when present, back off with jitter, and reduce concurrency.
Empty search results Query ambiguity, allowlist restriction, or wrong parameter names Try a precise address, inspect pagination, and compare your request with the Terra schema enabled for your account.
Reviews unavailable for a valid ID Reviews endpoint or language/filter requires a different package Remove unsupported filters, verify the location is licensed to your customer, and ask Tripadvisor about the required add-on.
Validation error Enum, date format or pagination field does not match the current schema Use the live documentation for your package; do not infer names from legacy JSON Partner API examples.
Content-display complaint Missing attribution, link or prohibited transformation Compare the UI with the approved display requirements and current terms before serving more content.

Security and reliability checklist

  • Keep keys in a secret manager or environment variables, never browser JavaScript or source control.
  • Use separate credentials and budgets for development, staging and production.
  • Log status, latency, request IDs and quota signals, but redact keys and unnecessary personal content.
  • Use bounded retries, circuit breakers and an outage-friendly cached response only where policy permits.
  • Test attribution, language, pagination and empty states with approved sample responses.
  • Review Terra package documentation whenever Tripadvisor changes fields, quotas or the legacy API migration schedule.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to capture a clean visual of a Tripadvisor page you are authorized to view, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-call website screenshot API. It is not a substitute for Tripadvisor’s licensed content API and does not grant permission to collect or republish Tripadvisor data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With the documented API, you can request a screenshot as follows (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Can I use Tripadvisor data for an internal dashboard?

Not automatically. The documented FAQ targets consumer-facing B2C products and identifies B2B reputation-management uses as ineligible. Submit your exact use case for a determination.

Does an API key provide every Tripadvisor endpoint?

No. Terra access is tied to your package and add-ons, with separate quotas and limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I keep using the JSON Partner API?

For new work, investigate Terra. The legacy page says JSON Partner API is in maintenance mode and expected to be deprecated in 2026 Q3, but gives no exact sunset date.

Can I avoid attribution if I only show a rating?

Do not assume so. Follow the attribution and display requirements in your approval and current agreement; the product page specifically says Locations API content requires Tripadvisor attribution.
