On someone else’s locked iPhone, tap Emergency on the passcode screen, then tap Medical ID. You don’t need the passcode, but this works only if the owner set up Medical ID and enabled Show When Locked. To view your own Medical ID, open Health, tap your profile picture or initials, then tap Medical ID.
These steps reflect Apple’s iOS 26 guidance, checked September 23, 2026. In a medical emergency, call your local emergency services first; Medical ID is supporting information, not a substitute for care.
Access Medical ID on someone else’s locked iPhone
- Wake the iPhone. If it has no Home button, swipe up to reach the passcode screen. If it has a Home button, press it.
- Tap Emergency.
- Tap Medical ID.
You can read the information the owner chose to make available without unlocking the phone. This does not provide access to the rest of the iPhone. Apple documents this route in its iPhone User Guide.

Not every field will be present, and the information may be incomplete or out of date.

If the person needs urgent help, don’t delay calling emergency services to search the phone. Share any relevant Medical ID details with responders. If the interface provides a way to call a listed emergency contact, use your judgment—but contact emergency services first in an immediate emergency.
View your own Medical ID
On your iPhone, open Health, tap your profile picture or initials in the upper-right corner, then tap Medical ID. On current iOS, you can also touch and hold the Health app icon on the Home Screen and choose Medical ID.

This opens the information saved in your Health app. Medical ID is an emergency information card, not a complete medical record or diagnosis. It includes only information you or someone setting up the phone entered.
Create or edit Medical ID
- Open Health and tap your profile picture or initials.
- Tap Medical ID. If you have not set one up, tap Get Started; otherwise, tap Edit.
- Add or update the details you want available, such as conditions, allergies and reactions, medications, and other listed information.
- To add emergency contacts, find Emergency Contacts, tap Edit, tap the add button beside Add Emergency Contact, choose a contact, and specify the relationship. To remove a contact, use the delete control beside that entry.
- Choose whether to enable Show When Locked and, if available and appropriate, Share During Emergency Call.
- Tap Done to save.
Apple’s Medical ID setup instructions cover these options. Review the entry after a diagnosis, medication or allergy change, emergency-contact change, or move to a new country or region. Don’t assume Medical ID automatically imports your full medical history.

What “Show When Locked” means
Show When Locked lets someone holding your iPhone reach your Medical ID from the Lock Screen without your passcode. It does not unlock the phone. Turning it on can help someone provide useful information to responders, but it also makes the Medical ID details you entered visible to anyone who has physical access to your locked phone. Enter only information you are comfortable exposing for emergency use.
To check the setting, go to Health → profile picture or initials → Medical ID → Edit, then look for Show When Locked.

How emergency sharing differs from Medical ID access
- Show When Locked: lets a person physically viewing the phone see the Medical ID.
- Share During Emergency Call: may share Medical ID with emergency services during an emergency call or text, subject to regional availability and settings. Apple identifies automatic sharing during emergency calls as available in the United States and Canada; support can differ elsewhere.
- Emergency Contacts: people listed in Medical ID. Emergency-contact notifications are associated with Emergency SOS or emergency-call behavior, not simply with opening or viewing Medical ID.
To review emergency sharing, go to Health → profile picture or initials → Medical ID → Edit and check Share During Emergency Call. Apple says Medical ID information will not be shared with emergency responders if Emergency Calls & SOS is turned off. On supported devices, that setting is under Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → System Services → Emergency Calls & SOS. This setting concerns automatic emergency sharing; it is not required just to view a Medical ID from the Lock Screen. See Apple’s regional and settings guidance before relying on automatic sharing.

After an Emergency SOS call, the iPhone may notify emergency contacts by text unless the user cancels the notification, and may share the user’s location and updates if available. Those behaviors are tied to Emergency SOS; they do not happen merely because someone opens Medical ID.

If Medical ID doesn’t appear or won’t open

Test your setup safely
- Finish creating or editing Medical ID and save it.
- Lock your iPhone.
- From the Lock Screen, open the emergency screen and check whether Medical ID appears.
- Confirm that the visible information is accurate and that you are comfortable exposing it.
Do not place a real emergency call just to test Share During Emergency Call. If you use an Apple Watch, Apple says Medical ID configured on the paired iPhone is also available on the watch. See the Apple Watch instructions for its controls.
