The right method depends on where the file lives. Use iCloud Drive or another cloud service for files you want synchronized and visible in the iPhone Files app. Use remote-desktop software when the file must remain on the Mac or you need to run a Mac application. For a nearby, one-time transfer, use AirDrop. An iPhone cannot natively browse every folder on a Mac’s internal drive.
Choose the method that matches your need
| Need | Best option | What it does | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular access to documents | iCloud Drive | Synchronizes selected files with Files on iPhone | Requires cloud storage and sync time |
| Already use Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or Box | Existing provider | Shows supported storage in Files | Features vary by provider |
| Files remain in arbitrary Mac folders | Remote desktop | Controls Finder on the Mac | Mac must be powered on, online and reachable |
| One nearby transfer | AirDrop | Sends a selected file directly | Not remote access |
Use iCloud Drive for files you want on the iPhone
What you need
- The Mac and iPhone must use the same Apple Account.
- iCloud Drive must be enabled on both devices.
- The Mac needs an internet connection while files synchronize.
- Your iCloud storage must have room for the files.
iCloud synchronizes files; it is not a complete backup of the Mac and does not expose every local folder.
Enable iCloud Drive on the Mac
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click your name, then iCloud.
- Choose Drive or iCloud Drive.
- Turn on Sync this Mac.
- To include those folders, enable Desktop & Documents Folders.
These labels differ on older macOS releases; Apple documents the current process at Apple Support and older layout differences at this Apple Support guide.
Find and use the files on iPhone
- Open Files.
- Tap Browse, then iCloud Drive under Locations.
- Open Desktop, Documents, or the folder where you saved the file.
Tap a compatible file to open it. Touch and hold it for actions such as rename, duplicate, move, delete or share. A compatible iPhone app can edit the file; some files can be downloaded or kept locally for offline use.

Add another cloud provider to Files
Use this route if your Mac workflow already relies on Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox or Box.

Use remote desktop for files that stay on the Mac
Remote desktop is appropriate for unsynchronized folders, large archives, external drives, Finder operations, or Mac-only applications. It streams the Mac’s screen and sends your input to that Mac; it does not copy the entire filesystem to the iPhone.
Chrome Remote Desktop setup
- On the Mac, open Chrome and visit remotedesktop.google.com/access.
- Under Set up remote access, download and install the host.
- Follow the prompts, create a PIN and approve requested macOS permissions.
- Install the Chrome Remote Desktop app on iPhone and sign in to the relevant Google account.
- Select the Mac under Remote access and enter the PIN.
- Use the virtual trackpad to open Finder and locate the file.
Google’s instructions state that sessions are encrypted. An unavailable computer appears dimmed in the device list (Google Chrome Help). The official setup page does not state a current subscription price.

Troubleshoot common failures
iCloud file is missing
- Verify the same Apple Account is used on both devices.
- Confirm iCloud Drive and Sync this Mac are enabled.
- Check that the file is inside iCloud Drive, Desktop or Documents.
- Keep the Mac online, allow synchronization to finish, then reopen Files.
Sync time depends on the internet connection (Apple Support).
Remote desktop cannot connect
- Make sure the Mac is powered on, online and the host is running.
- Check the account, PIN and macOS privacy permissions.
- Corporate firewalls or network policies may block access.
- A sleeping Mac may be unreachable; wake behavior varies by model, settings, network and service.
The file opens but cannot be edited
The iPhone may lack an editor for that format. Mac project files, application bundles, databases and specialist documents often require the Mac application, so use remote desktop.
External drive or powered-off Mac
Cloud services do not automatically expose an external drive; copy files into a synchronized location or use remote desktop. No method can retrieve a local-only file from a Mac that is turned off and has not synchronized it previously.

- Existing Microsoft, Google, Dropbox or Box workflow: add that provider to Files.
- Unsynchronized folders or Mac applications: remote desktop.
- One nearby file: AirDrop.
- Mac off or inaccessible: only files already synchronized elsewhere remain available.
