On July 5, 2011, Texas Instruments said its OMAP4 platform was the first partner platform to earn Netflix Silicon Reference Implementation (SRI) certification for Netflix HD on Android. The announcement described support for streams up to 1080p with end-to-end content protection. It was a milestone in secure mobile streaming—not a promise that every OMAP4 device could play Netflix in 1080p.
What TI announced—and what “first” meant
TI’s July 5, 2011 announcement said OMAP4 was the first partner platform to achieve Netflix SRI certification for the Netflix HD application on Android. TI described the solution as enabling streaming up to full HD 1080p while protecting content across the playback path. It also called this the first Netflix-certified 1080p streaming application with end-to-end protection on a mobile device. Those are claims made by TI in its announcement, not evidence that OMAP4 was the first mobile processor capable of decoding 1080p or that every OMAP4 product shipped with Netflix HD. “Silicon Reference Implementation” referred to a Netflix-validated platform implementation, not a consumer badge that automatically applied to every product using the chip. The certification concerned protected HD streaming. It was separate from a Netflix subscription, app availability, handset approval, and the resolution of a device’s built-in screen.

Why 1080p decoding was not enough
A processor can decode a high-resolution local video without meeting a streaming service’s requirements for protected premium content. Netflix needed a playback chain in which rights checks and decryption, video processing, and display output were secured against ordinary software access or capture. That distinction explains the point of the certification: OMAP4’s video capability was one ingredient; Netflix’s approval depended on integration among the processor, trusted software, DRM, Android build, and output path.
What OMAP4 contributed
TI described OMAP4 as built around two ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore CPU cores, with hardware and multimedia engines for multistandard 1080p video at up to 30 frames per second. Dedicated video processing could handle decoding work without relying entirely on the general-purpose CPU cores. TI also promoted parallel processing as a way to balance performance and power use. These are platform capabilities, not a guarantee that every device would stream every title at that resolution.

TI’s OMAP4 platform brief lists 1080p HD video capability for both OMAP4430 and OMAP4460, while noting differences in their processor and 3D-video capabilities. How the protected playback path worked
M-Shield and TrustZone
TI said its M-Shield technology provided a hardware-protected trusted execution environment on OMAP. The architecture used ARM TrustZone to separate sensitive trusted operations from ordinary Android activity. In practical terms, Android could handle the interface and everyday app tasks while security-sensitive DRM operations ran in a protected environment intended to keep clear content and key operations out of reach of normal software.

TrustZone supplied an architectural foundation; it did not, by itself, make a device Netflix-certified. The implementation and integration across the device still mattered. Trusted Logic, TrustedShow, and PlayReady
TI worked with Trusted Logic on secure middleware that ran Trusted Logic’s TrustedShow technology and an OMAP-optimized implementation of Microsoft PlayReady, the DRM scheme required for Netflix’s solution. The roles were distinct: M-Shield and TrustZone provided the processor security foundation; the middleware connected protected playback to that foundation; PlayReady handled rights enforcement; and Netflix SRI certification applied to the integrated implementation. Installing PlayReady alone would not make an Android device capable of Netflix HD.

HDMI and HDCP
TI also described HDCP encryption over HDMI, allowing a compatible device to send protected video to a television. That depended on the entire external-output chain: the device and its software, any adapter, HDMI connection, and television needed to support the required protection. Having an HDMI port did not guarantee Netflix HD output, and incompatibility could prevent external playback or affect quality. The announcement describes the intended protected-output design, not compatibility across every OMAP4 product.

What a finished device still needed
The certification was a platform milestone, but an individual product needed the right implementation and software to make it useful to viewers. In practice, that meant more than an OMAP4 chip:

- A supported Android build and Netflix application available for that device.
- Correct integration of PlayReady, trusted middleware, and secure video processing.
- A display or external-output path capable of handling the protected stream.
- For HDMI viewing, compatible HDCP support throughout the output chain.
TI said the certified solution supported Android 2.3, Gingerbread, at the time, with other Android versions planned during 2011. It said OMAP4 devices with Netflix pre-installed would arrive in the “near future,” without giving a precise launch date. That was a plan for future devices, not an announcement that existing OMAP4 owners would receive an immediate universal update. TI’s announcement on Android support and planned availability
What viewers could—and could not—expect
“Up to 1080p” described the maximum capability in TI’s certification announcement, not a promise that every viewer would see a 1920 × 1080 picture. The built-in display could have a lower resolution; application and device support could vary; and stream quality could change with network conditions. An external television offered another possible display route, but only if the protected HDMI chain worked.
Common reasons a capable-looking device could still fail to deliver Netflix HD included an unavailable or unsupported Netflix app, an unapproved device integration, an unsupported Android build, a DRM or trusted-environment error, or an incompatible HDCP output path. Why the announcement mattered
OMAP4’s significance was the combination of mobile video processing and a protected playback design that Netflix accepted for its Android HD application. The announcement captured a broader shift: bringing premium streaming to phones required adapting content-security systems previously associated with more controlled playback environments to a fragmented mobile platform.
The defensible historical claim remains narrow: TI said OMAP4 was the first partner platform to earn Netflix SRI certification for Netflix HD on Android. The announcement does not establish that it was the first shipping Android handset to stream Netflix at 1080p, that every OMAP4 device qualified, or that any OMAP4 product still supports Netflix HD today.
